AMOUNT: Awards up <strong>to</strong> $22,500 ELIGIBLE<br />

APPLICANTS: Any undergraduate students who is a U.S. citizen; enrolled as a full-time student in <strong>the</strong> Fall<br />

2006 as a junior at an accredited college or university within <strong>the</strong> United States or U.S. terri<strong>to</strong>ries; who possesses<br />

at least a cumulative 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale in all completed undergraduate courses and in <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

major field <strong>of</strong> study; and has declared a major in a NOAA-related discipline.<br />

Eligible undergraduates studying oceanic, environmental, biological, and atmospheric sciences, ma<strong>the</strong>matics,<br />

engineering, remote sensing technology, physical and social sciences including geography, physics, hydrology,<br />

geomatics, or teacher education that support NOAA's programs and mission are encouraged <strong>to</strong> apply.<br />

• Nell G<strong>of</strong>f Memorial Scholarship<br />

<strong>The</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> this scholarship is <strong>to</strong> financially aid students who are interested in a future major or majoring in<br />

horticulture, floriculture, landscape design, conservation, forestry, botany, agronomy, plant pathology,<br />

environmental control, city planning and/or o<strong>the</strong>r gardening related fields. Student must be a legal resident <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> State <strong>of</strong> Maine. Priority is given <strong>to</strong> a resident <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> St. Croix District (Hancock County and <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

part <strong>of</strong> Washing<strong>to</strong>n County. College sophomores are eligible, as <strong>the</strong>y will be entering <strong>the</strong>ir junior year <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>following</strong> fall. Application deadline is March 1 st , winners will be announced no later than May 1 st .<br />

Criteria:<br />

Students must demonstrate financial need.<br />

Students must live in PWD’s service terri<strong>to</strong>ry (Portland,South Portland, Westbrook, Windham, Gorham,<br />

Raymond, Cumberland, Falmouth, Scarborough, Cape Elizabeth).<br />

Students must <strong>have</strong> a declared major that is related <strong>to</strong> PWD’s mission <strong>to</strong> protect public health and <strong>the</strong><br />

environment (e.g., environmental studies, sciences, engineering, medical, dental, trades, public administration).<br />

Preference will be given <strong>to</strong> a student that attends or plans <strong>to</strong> attend an accredited college or university (Husson<br />

College, <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Maine, <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> New England, Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Maine Community College) in<br />

PWD’s member communities.<br />

Scholarship will be given on a one-time basis; not "renewable."<br />

Preference will be given <strong>to</strong> students who <strong>have</strong> an affiliation with <strong>the</strong> Portland Water District.<br />

Preference will be given <strong>to</strong> students that demonstrate educational excellence through GPA, SAT, academic<br />

honors, etc.<br />

Preference will be given <strong>to</strong> students that demonstrate a commitment <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> community through involvement.<br />
