• PI Lambda Theta (Distinguished Student Scholars Award for Education Majors)

The Distinguished Student Scholar Award is presented in recognition of an education major who has displayed
leadership potential and a strong dedication to education. The award consists of a cash payment of five hundred
dollars ($500) and a framed certificate. If the recipient is qualified to be a member of Pi Lambda Theta but is
not a member, a complimentary one-year membership is extended. The award, established in 1991, is funded by
the Pi Lambda Theta Educational Endowment.
• Quality Child Care Education Scholarship Program

This program is intended to support and encourage childcare professional pursuing professional development at
the postsecondary level. Eligible applicants must be a Maine resident, either currently working as a childcare
provider or express the intent to become a childcare provider, and must expect to enroll in a U.S. accredited
college or university in Maine, another U.S. state, or a foreign country. Applicants must also be taking childcare
courses or pursuing a certificate, two-year or four-year undergraduate college degree or post baccalaureate
degree that will lead to direct childcare related service. Childcare positions may be in nursery schools, Head
Stat, before and after school programs, and in programs for children with special needs as long as the program
is for children who are pre-kindergarten age.
This scholarship is awarded for the cost of up to two courses per semester. Scholarship awards are based upon
the cost of tuition, fees, and books with a maximum scholarship of $500. per course. Recipients are eligible for
up to $2,000. in an award year. Each award begins in September and ends in August of the following year.
Payments will not be made directly to applicant.
This is a need-based scholarship. The Finance Authority of Maine (FAME) reviews application.

In order to qualify, applicants must either be taking one or more childhood education courses or pursuing a
Child Development Associate (CDA) Certificate, Associate Degree, Baccalaureate Degree or Postbaccalaureate
Teacher Certification in child care related fields.; must be a State of Maine resident; applicant
must show financial need, as determined by FAME, and must submit the previous year’s signed Federal Income
Tax Form 1040 with the application.

• Teachers For Maine Program, Robert C. Byrd Honors Schoalrship Program
This program provides funds for approximately 200 new recipients – selected from among high school seniors,
college students, post-baccalaureates and teachers.
The deadline for applications, both new and renewal, in the past has been April 1 st . Applications must be
postmarked by the deadline date to be accepted. In previous years, renewal applications have been sent directly
to past recipients.
High School and College student recipients – if selected, high school seniors and college students are eligible
for loans for $3,000 per year, for a maximum of $12,000 for full-time undergraduate study. Post-baccalaureate
Applicants may receive $1,500 per year for a maximum of $6,000 for graduate study or continued study to
become teacher certified. All applicants must be pursuing a course of study leading to teacher certification.
