• PI Lambda <strong>The</strong>ta (Distinguished Student Scholars Award for Education Majors)<br />

<strong>The</strong> Distinguished Student Scholar Award is presented in recognition <strong>of</strong> an education major who has displayed<br />

leadership potential and a strong dedication <strong>to</strong> education. <strong>The</strong> award consists <strong>of</strong> a cash payment <strong>of</strong> five hundred<br />

dollars ($500) and a framed certificate. If <strong>the</strong> recipient is qualified <strong>to</strong> be a member <strong>of</strong> Pi Lambda <strong>The</strong>ta but is<br />

not a member, a complimentary one-year membership is extended. <strong>The</strong> award, established in 1991, is funded by<br />

<strong>the</strong> Pi Lambda <strong>The</strong>ta Educational Endowment.<br />

• Quality Child Care Education Scholarship Program<br />

This program is intended <strong>to</strong> support and encourage childcare pr<strong>of</strong>essional pursuing pr<strong>of</strong>essional development at<br />

<strong>the</strong> postsecondary level. Eligible applicants must be a Maine resident, ei<strong>the</strong>r currently working as a childcare<br />

provider or express <strong>the</strong> intent <strong>to</strong> become a childcare provider, and must expect <strong>to</strong> enroll in a U.S. accredited<br />

college or university in Maine, ano<strong>the</strong>r U.S. state, or a foreign country. Applicants must also be taking childcare<br />

courses or pursuing a certificate, two-year or four-year undergraduate college degree or post baccalaureate<br />

degree that will lead <strong>to</strong> direct childcare related service. Childcare positions may be in nursery schools, Head<br />

Stat, before and after school programs, and in programs for children with special needs as long as <strong>the</strong> program<br />

is for children who are pre-kindergarten age.<br />

This scholarship is awarded for <strong>the</strong> cost <strong>of</strong> up <strong>to</strong> two courses per semester. Scholarship awards are based upon<br />

<strong>the</strong> cost <strong>of</strong> tuition, fees, and books with a maximum scholarship <strong>of</strong> $500. per course. Recipients are eligible for<br />

up <strong>to</strong> $2,000. in an award year. Each award begins in September and ends in August <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>following</strong> year.<br />

Payments will not be made directly <strong>to</strong> applicant.<br />

This is a need-based scholarship. <strong>The</strong> Finance Authority <strong>of</strong> Maine (FAME) reviews application.<br />

In order <strong>to</strong> qualify, applicants must ei<strong>the</strong>r be taking one or more childhood education courses or pursuing a<br />

Child Development Associate (CDA) Certificate, Associate Degree, Baccalaureate Degree or Postbaccalaureate<br />

Teacher Certification in child care related fields.; must be a State <strong>of</strong> Maine resident; applicant<br />

must show financial need, as determined by FAME, and must submit <strong>the</strong> previous year’s signed Federal Income<br />

Tax Form 1040 with <strong>the</strong> application.<br />

• Teachers For Maine Program, Robert C. Byrd Honors Schoalrship Program<br />

This program provides funds for approximately 200 new recipients – selected from among high school seniors,<br />

college students, post-baccalaureates and teachers.<br />

<strong>The</strong> deadline for applications, both new and renewal, in <strong>the</strong> past has <strong>been</strong> April 1 st . Applications must be<br />

postmarked by <strong>the</strong> deadline date <strong>to</strong> be accepted. In previous years, renewal applications <strong>have</strong> <strong>been</strong> sent directly<br />

<strong>to</strong> past recipients.<br />

High School and College student recipients – if selected, high school seniors and college students are eligible<br />

for loans for $3,000 per year, for a maximum <strong>of</strong> $12,000 for full-time undergraduate study. Post-baccalaureate<br />

Applicants may receive $1,500 per year for a maximum <strong>of</strong> $6,000 for graduate study or continued study <strong>to</strong><br />

become teacher certified. All applicants must be pursuing a course <strong>of</strong> study leading <strong>to</strong> teacher certification.
