<strong>The</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Health provides a Loan Repayment Program as an incentive <strong>to</strong> recruit and retain primary care<br />

practitioners who are interested in and willing <strong>to</strong> make a commitment <strong>to</strong> practicing in Federally designated Health<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Shortage Areas. Primary Care Practitioners include physicians in family practice, general internal medicine,<br />

general pediatrics, osteopathic general practice, and obstetrics; general dentists; certified registered nurse practitioners;<br />

certified nurse midwives and physician assistants.<br />

RHODE ISLAND<br />

• Rhode Island Health Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Loan Repayment Program<br />

<strong>The</strong> program provides loan repayment <strong>to</strong> providers who make a two-year commitment <strong>to</strong> work in non-pr<strong>of</strong>it health agencies<br />

located in a health pr<strong>of</strong>essional shortage area. Eligible pr<strong>of</strong>essionals include: physicians, dentists, nurse practitioners,<br />

certified nurse-midwives, physician assistants, and dental hygienists working for non-pr<strong>of</strong>it organizations in federally<br />

designated health pr<strong>of</strong>essional shortage areas. <strong>The</strong> health pr<strong>of</strong>essional must be fully licensed in Rhode Island and ready for<br />

full-time work. <strong>The</strong> recipients must sign a two-year contract with a non-pr<strong>of</strong>it health care facility located in a federally<br />

designated HPSA.<br />

SOUTH DAKOTA<br />

• South Dakota Physician Tuition Reimbursement Program<br />

<strong>The</strong> program provides financial inducements <strong>to</strong> family physicians <strong>to</strong> practice in rural areas by reimbursing each qualifying<br />

physician a portion <strong>of</strong> medical school tuition costs in return for <strong>the</strong>ir practice in rural communities. <strong>The</strong> exact amount is equal<br />

<strong>to</strong> double <strong>the</strong> tuition <strong>the</strong> qualifying physician would <strong>have</strong> paid at <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> South Dakota School <strong>of</strong> Medicine for <strong>the</strong><br />

four most recently completed academic years. To be eligible a physician must: be licensed as a physician in South Dakota,<br />

<strong>have</strong> completed a three year allopathic residency or a two year osteopathic residency in family practice and agree <strong>to</strong> practice<br />

as a family physician in an eligible community for at least three years.<br />

To be eligible you must be Board-Eligible, Board-Certified, Licensed Primary Care Physicians: Family Practice, Obstetrics,<br />

Pediatrics, Internal Medicine and Dentists. You must serve a minimum <strong>of</strong> 3 years, and can access <strong>the</strong> program 12 months<br />

prior <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> start date. <strong>The</strong> Letter <strong>of</strong> Intent reserves slot in community. Your service commitment must be done in a health<br />

resource shortage area.<br />
