This loan is available <strong>to</strong> Pennsylvania residents (prior <strong>to</strong> entering osteopathic medical school) who will be entering <strong>the</strong>ir third<br />

or fourth year <strong>of</strong> any college <strong>of</strong> osteopathic medicine in <strong>the</strong> U.S. (you must apply each year). Loans granted vary based on<br />

review but no more than $3,000 per year; loan granted shall be interest-free for <strong>the</strong> first two years. <strong>The</strong>reafter, interest will<br />

begin <strong>to</strong> accrue. Loans are granted once a year – usually in August – application deadline April 1 st .<br />

Interest Free loans form <strong>the</strong> Albert Strickler Memorial fund – prefer first year students apply. This fund was established<br />

through an endowment made by Dr. Albert Strickler, a prominent derma<strong>to</strong>logist and founder <strong>of</strong> Philadelphia’s Skin and<br />

Cancer Hospital. Loans range from $400 <strong>to</strong> $1,000. Deadline June 30 th .<br />

• Medical Student Loan Repayment Program<br />

<strong>The</strong> Foundation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pennsylvania Medical Society provides low-interest loans <strong>of</strong> up <strong>to</strong> $5,000 per academic year <strong>to</strong> bona<br />

fide Pennsylvania residents. Additionally, students must be enrolled full-time in an accredited U.S. medical school, <strong>have</strong><br />

completed a FAFSA form and are in good standing with o<strong>the</strong>r credi<strong>to</strong>rs. Loan awards are based upon financial need.<br />

Interest accrues during school at a fixed rate <strong>of</strong> 6%; <strong>the</strong> accrued interest does not compound in<strong>to</strong> principal until repayment.<br />

Upon graduation from medical school, repayment can be annually deferred (with 6% percent interest accrual) up <strong>to</strong> five years<br />

for additional medical training. Repayment <strong>of</strong> loan begins upon completion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> approved deferment period. <strong>The</strong> repayment<br />

period is up <strong>to</strong> 10 years and <strong>the</strong> interest rate is <strong>the</strong> 91-day T-bill rate plus 2.5% as <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> preceding June 1.<br />

An application form is available upon request from <strong>the</strong> Foundation. Applications must be submitted between March 1 st and<br />

June 1 st .<br />
