• North Carolina Rural Practice Incentive Programs:<br />

<strong>The</strong> practice incentives outlined below are designed <strong>to</strong> assist health pr<strong>of</strong>essionals who are interested in providing health care<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> North Carolina’s under-service communities. <strong>The</strong> information provided outlines <strong>the</strong> incentive programs available<br />

subject <strong>to</strong> availability <strong>of</strong> funds. However, at <strong>the</strong> time any contract is executed, all funds involved are escrowed.<br />

o NC Loan Repayment Program – funds for loan repayment are made available through <strong>the</strong> NC Office <strong>of</strong> Rural<br />

Health and Resource Development’s administration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State Loan Repayment Program. <strong>the</strong> NC program <strong>of</strong>fers 2<br />

<strong>to</strong> 4 year repayment schedules for medical school loans (principal plus interest). <strong>The</strong> Office also facilitates <strong>the</strong><br />

application process for <strong>the</strong> Federal Loan Repayment Program for sites and candidates which meet eligibility criteria.<br />

o NC Residency Loan Program – Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and nurse midwives enrolled in<br />

a primary care training program may apply for an annual loan which may be converted <strong>to</strong> service forgiveness on a<br />

year-for-year basis when practicing in an <strong>of</strong>ficially designated area or site. Service forgiveness under this program<br />

may occur concurrently with o<strong>the</strong>r incentive programs.<br />

o NC High Needs Service Bonus Program – This incentive has <strong>been</strong> designed for those with low loans or no loans. In<br />

some instances High Needs Service Bonus may be combined with loan repayments. <strong>The</strong> tax stipend does not apply<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>se funds.<br />

Any physician from an accredited allopathic or osteopathic medical school in <strong>the</strong> US or Canada; priority will be given <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> North Dakota School <strong>of</strong> Medicine graduates or o<strong>the</strong>r graduates who <strong>have</strong> completed an UND residency<br />

training program. Physicians must be licensed <strong>to</strong> practice in North Dakota and must agree <strong>to</strong> practice four years in <strong>the</strong><br />

selected community. Up <strong>to</strong> $40,000. Over a four year period <strong>to</strong> pay medical school loans is <strong>of</strong>fered.<br />
