• Charles E. Gilbert Loan Fund<br />

This loan was established <strong>to</strong> provide financial assistance <strong>to</strong> graduates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Maine system who will be doing<br />

fur<strong>the</strong>r study at AMA approved medical, dental and veterinary schools. This loan has a 5% interest rate and is deferrable<br />

during enrollment, with additional deferments during required internships. Amounts vary from year <strong>to</strong> year depending on <strong>the</strong><br />

number <strong>of</strong> recipients and <strong>the</strong> amount in <strong>the</strong> loan fund.<br />

• Maine Health Pr<strong>of</strong>essions Loan<br />

o Eligibility: Must be a Maine resident and must asttend a postgraduate allopathic or osteopathic<br />

medical school, dental school, op<strong>to</strong>metry, or veterinarian sciences.<br />

o Award amount: Up <strong>to</strong> $25,000 for Maine Access Seat Participants, and up <strong>to</strong> $10,000 for o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

eligibility applicants.<br />

• Maine Medical Education Loan Foundation (3/2006)<br />

<strong>The</strong> Maine Medical Education Foundation was established by <strong>the</strong> Maine Medical Association <strong>to</strong> make loans <strong>to</strong> Maine<br />

Residents enrolled in or accepted <strong>to</strong> approved medical schools. No loan fees, loan amount range from $2,000 up <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> full<br />

cost <strong>of</strong> education Interest on <strong>the</strong> loan <strong>the</strong>n starts at 1% for <strong>the</strong> first year after graduation and increases <strong>to</strong> 3% <strong>the</strong> second year<br />

and <strong>to</strong> 5% <strong>the</strong> third year and each year <strong>the</strong>reafter. No later than 5 years <strong>following</strong> graduation from medical school, repayment<br />

will begin in equal quarterly installments, 10 year repayment tern. Payments will be in such an amount as will repay <strong>the</strong><br />

principal and accrued interest no later than 10 years from <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> graduation from medical school.<br />

This program is <strong>to</strong> increase access <strong>to</strong> medically under-served or unserved populations and is jointly funded by <strong>the</strong> Federal<br />

Public Health Service, National Health Service Corps and <strong>the</strong> State <strong>of</strong> Maine. All commitments are for a minimum <strong>of</strong> two<br />

years with severe penalties for failure <strong>to</strong> complete obligation. This program pertains <strong>to</strong> Physicians, Dentist, Certified Nurse,<br />

Midwife, Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant.<br />
