• Washing<strong>to</strong>n State Health Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Scholarship Program<br />

<strong>The</strong> Health Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Scholarship program was established <strong>to</strong> provide <strong>scholarships</strong> <strong>to</strong> students training <strong>to</strong> primary care<br />

health pr<strong>of</strong>essionals. Award <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scholarship is conditioned on <strong>the</strong> recipient agreeing <strong>to</strong> work in a designated health care<br />

shortage area in Washing<strong>to</strong>n State in his/her chosen field for a minimum <strong>of</strong> three years. Scholarship applications are available<br />

after January 15 th from <strong>the</strong> Higher Education Coordinating Board. Application deadline is routinely in April/May and<br />

applicants are notified by mail in June. Terms includes tuition, books, living expenses; disbursed <strong>to</strong> educational institution;<br />

penalty for not completing obligation; need not be a Washing<strong>to</strong>n State resident, and need not attend Washing<strong>to</strong>n State<br />

educational institution.<br />

Direc<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> Funding Resources for Practicing in Underserved Areas.<br />

This direc<strong>to</strong>ry identifies and describes financial aid programs, <strong>scholarships</strong>, fellowships, grants, awards and o<strong>the</strong>r incentives <strong>to</strong> attract<br />

and retain health care personnel in scarcity areas. Entries contain descriptions <strong>of</strong> initiatives from educational institutions, state and<br />

federal loan repayment programs, and o<strong>the</strong>r resources that address <strong>the</strong> problem <strong>of</strong> physician supply in medically underserved areas.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re is a need <strong>to</strong> improve <strong>the</strong> distribution, supply, quality, utilization and efficiency <strong>of</strong> health personnel in underserved areas. This<br />

direc<strong>to</strong>ry was created <strong>to</strong> inform medical students, family medicine residents and practicing family physicians <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> incentives and<br />

opportunities available for health personnel <strong>to</strong> provide basic medical services <strong>to</strong> communities and populations that lack adequate<br />

access <strong>to</strong> primary care services.<br />

Each year applications will be available for download after March 1 st and will only be accepted by Federation until<br />

May 31 st . Each scholarship fund has a separate committee that meets during <strong>the</strong> summer <strong>to</strong> review <strong>the</strong> applications. All<br />

applicants are notified by mail whe<strong>the</strong>r or not <strong>the</strong>y <strong>have</strong> <strong>been</strong> chosen as a recipient. Scholarships funds are disbursed after<br />

September 1 st .<br />

o Albert Strickler Memorial Fund<br />

Dr. Albert Strickler, founder <strong>of</strong> Philadelphia’s Skin and Cancer Hospital, established this fund through an<br />

endowment. Dr. Strickler recognized <strong>the</strong> need <strong>to</strong> assist talented men and women pursue <strong>the</strong>ir medical<br />

education. <strong>The</strong> fund provides an interest-free loan <strong>of</strong> $1,000 <strong>to</strong> medical students, preferably <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jewish<br />

faith, as an aid <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir education. Students should demonstrate a significant need <strong>of</strong> financial aid and be<br />

enrolled in an accredited U.S. Medical or Osteopathic school. It is a requirement <strong>of</strong> this fund that loan<br />

repayments begin within five years after graduation. This ensures that funds will continue <strong>to</strong> be available<br />

for future students in need.<br />

o Samuel F. and Sara G. Feinman Fund<br />

Isabel Feinman established this fund through an endowment in memory <strong>of</strong> her parents. Ms. Feinman was a<br />

compassionate resident <strong>of</strong> Philadelphia. She created <strong>the</strong> fund <strong>to</strong> assist talented men and women pursue<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir legal or medical education. <strong>The</strong> fund provides an interest-free loan ranging from $2,000 - $4,000 <strong>to</strong><br />

medical and law school students based on financial need. Preference is given <strong>to</strong> students who live in <strong>the</strong>
