• Washington State Health Professional Scholarship Program

The Health Professional Scholarship program was established to provide scholarships to students training to primary care
health professionals. Award of the scholarship is conditioned on the recipient agreeing to work in a designated health care
shortage area in Washington State in his/her chosen field for a minimum of three years. Scholarship applications are available
after January 15 th from the Higher Education Coordinating Board. Application deadline is routinely in April/May and
applicants are notified by mail in June. Terms includes tuition, books, living expenses; disbursed to educational institution;
penalty for not completing obligation; need not be a Washington State resident, and need not attend Washington State
educational institution.

This directory identifies and describes financial aid programs, scholarships, fellowships, grants, awards and other incentives to attract
and retain health care personnel in scarcity areas. Entries contain descriptions of initiatives from educational institutions, state and
federal loan repayment programs, and other resources that address the problem of physician supply in medically underserved areas.
There is a need to improve the distribution, supply, quality, utilization and efficiency of health personnel in underserved areas. This
directory was created to inform medical students, family medicine residents and practicing family physicians of the incentives and
opportunities available for health personnel to provide basic medical services to communities and populations that lack adequate
access to primary care services.
• Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia - Educational Loans (9/06)
Each year applications will be available for download after March 1 st and will only be accepted by Federation until
May 31 st . Each scholarship fund has a separate committee that meets during the summer to review the applications. All
applicants are notified by mail whether or not they have been chosen as a recipient. Scholarships funds are disbursed after
September 1 st .
o Albert Strickler Memorial Fund
Dr. Albert Strickler, founder of Philadelphia’s Skin and Cancer Hospital, established this fund through an
endowment. Dr. Strickler recognized the need to assist talented men and women pursue their medical
education. The fund provides an interest-free loan of $1,000 to medical students, preferably of the Jewish
faith, as an aid to their education. Students should demonstrate a significant need of financial aid and be
enrolled in an accredited U.S. Medical or Osteopathic school. It is a requirement of this fund that loan
repayments begin within five years after graduation. This ensures that funds will continue to be available
for future students in need.
o Samuel F. and Sara G. Feinman Fund
Isabel Feinman established this fund through an endowment in memory of her parents. Ms. Feinman was a
compassionate resident of Philadelphia. She created the fund to assist talented men and women pursue
their legal or medical education. The fund provides an interest-free loan ranging from $2,000 - $4,000 to
medical and law school students based on financial need. Preference is given to students who live in the
