medical students.<br />

How are <strong>the</strong> <strong>scholarships</strong> awarded? Scholarships are awarded <strong>to</strong> continuing students who express an interest in returning <strong>to</strong><br />

Maine <strong>to</strong> practice, or in teaching in an osteopathic college in New England. Preference is given <strong>to</strong> applicants from <strong>the</strong><br />

Bangor, Maine area (as determined by <strong>the</strong> Maine Osteopathic Association).<br />

Each year <strong>the</strong> Committee on Financial Aid and Awards at Bowdoin College awards financial assistance from <strong>the</strong>se funds<br />

<strong>to</strong> students who are in need <strong>to</strong> financial aid and who are attending medical school. <strong>The</strong> Committee meets <strong>to</strong> review<br />

applications at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> January and awards are mailed <strong>to</strong> medical school programs shortly <strong>the</strong>reafter. <strong>The</strong>re are no<br />

restrictions concerning renewal <strong>of</strong> awards from one year <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> next. Even though Committee decisions vary somewhat<br />

from year <strong>to</strong> year depending upon <strong>the</strong> income that <strong>the</strong> Funds earn and <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> candidates applying for aid, we can<br />

usually provide assistance <strong>to</strong> forty or so students with individual awards ranging from $900 <strong>to</strong> $5,000, except for <strong>the</strong><br />

Peters Fund, where awards can be significantly higher. <strong>The</strong> conditions for granting awards are:<br />

o Garcelon and Merritt Fund - Preference <strong>to</strong> Bowdoin College graduates who are eligible for assistance in <strong>the</strong>ir first<br />

year <strong>of</strong> medical school. Residents <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> Maine who <strong>have</strong> graduated from o<strong>the</strong>r colleges or universities are<br />

eligible for assistance in <strong>the</strong>ir second and subsequent years <strong>of</strong> attendance at medical school.<br />

o Robinson-Davis Fund - Sixty percent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> income from <strong>the</strong> Fund is available for those who intend <strong>to</strong> study and<br />

practice medicine, preference being given <strong>to</strong> natives and residents <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> State <strong>of</strong> Maine.
