Who is eligible to apply? Scholarships are available only to Maine Residents that are second, third or fourth year osteopathic
medical students.
Scholarship amount: $1,000
How are the scholarships awarded? Scholarships are awarded to continuing students who express an interest in returning to
Maine to practice, or in teaching in an osteopathic college in New England. Preference is given to applicants from the
Bangor, Maine area (as determined by the Maine Osteopathic Association).

Each year the Committee on Financial Aid and Awards at Bowdoin College awards financial assistance from these funds
to students who are in need to financial aid and who are attending medical school. The Committee meets to review
applications at the end of January and awards are mailed to medical school programs shortly thereafter. There are no
restrictions concerning renewal of awards from one year to the next. Even though Committee decisions vary somewhat
from year to year depending upon the income that the Funds earn and the number of candidates applying for aid, we can
usually provide assistance to forty or so students with individual awards ranging from $900 to $5,000, except for the
Peters Fund, where awards can be significantly higher. The conditions for granting awards are:
o Garcelon and Merritt Fund - Preference to Bowdoin College graduates who are eligible for assistance in their first
year of medical school. Residents of the state of Maine who have graduated from other colleges or universities are
eligible for assistance in their second and subsequent years of attendance at medical school.
o Robinson-Davis Fund - Sixty percent of the income from the Fund is available for those who intend to study and
practice medicine, preference being given to natives and residents of the State of Maine.
