Katherine Wills Coleman and Mortar Board National Foundation Fellowships The Mortar Board National Foundation Fund was established in 1955. Students and alumni who are members of Mortar Board are eligible for scholarships of $1,500; 15 such fellowships have been awarded in the past. Scholarship recipients serve where they are most needed upon completion of their training. The program offers the following benefits for up to 4 years of education: • Payment of tuition and fees • Twelve monthly stipend payments per year of scholarship support • Payment of other reasonable educational expenses, such as books, supplies, and equipment To be eligible for the NHSC Scholarship Program, you must be a U.S. citizen enrolled, or accepted for enrollment, in a fully accredited U.S.: • Allopathic or osteopathic medical school • Family nurse practitioner program (master's degree in nursing, post-master's or post-baccalaureate certificate) • Nurse-midwifery program (master's degree in nursing, post-master's or post-baccalaureate certificate) • Physician assistant program (certificate, associate, baccalaureate, or master's program) • Dental school Scholars attending medical school are expected to complete residency programs in one of the following specialties: • Family medicine • General pediatrics • General internal medicine • Obstetrics/gynecology • Psychiatry • Rotating internship (DO’s only) with a request to complete one of the above specialties Service Obligation of one year of service for each year of support (two year minimum). Awards are open to African-Americans, mainland Puerto Ricans, Mexican- Americans, and Native Americans who are enrolled in accredited schools of allopathic or osteopathic medicine in the United States. Award recipients must be U.S. citizens. The need-based scholarships are awarded to students enrolled in the first and second years of medical school. These awards are based on financial need, cost of education, and receipt of additional scholarships and grants. In addition to its need-based scholarships, NMF administers a number of special award and fellowship programs that recognize and encourage extraordinary accomplishments.
