Ka<strong>the</strong>rine Wills Coleman and Mortar Board National Foundation Fellowships<br />

<strong>The</strong> Mortar Board National Foundation Fund was established in 1955. Students and alumni who are members <strong>of</strong> Mortar Board are<br />

eligible for <strong>scholarships</strong> <strong>of</strong> $1,500; 15 such fellowships <strong>have</strong> <strong>been</strong> awarded in <strong>the</strong> past.<br />

Criteria and applications are sent <strong>to</strong> each Mortar Site Board chapter, and also are available on <strong>the</strong> web at <strong>the</strong> site below.<br />

Interested members need <strong>to</strong> request an application, and return <strong>the</strong> required information by January 31.<br />

<strong>The</strong> NHSC <strong>of</strong>fers a competitive scholarship program designed for students committed <strong>to</strong> providing primary health care in<br />

communities <strong>of</strong> greatest need. Scholarship recipients serve where <strong>the</strong>y are most needed upon completion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir training.<br />

<strong>The</strong> program <strong>of</strong>fers <strong>the</strong> <strong>following</strong> benefits for up <strong>to</strong> 4 years <strong>of</strong> education:<br />

• Payment <strong>of</strong> tuition and fees<br />

• Twelve monthly stipend payments per year <strong>of</strong> scholarship support<br />

• Payment <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r reasonable educational expenses, such as books, supplies, and equipment<br />

To be eligible for <strong>the</strong> NHSC Scholarship Program, you must be a U.S. citizen enrolled, or accepted for enrollment, in a fully<br />

accredited U.S.:<br />

• Allopathic or osteopathic medical school<br />

• Family nurse practitioner program (master's degree in nursing, post-master's or post-baccalaureate certificate)<br />

• Nurse-midwifery program (master's degree in nursing, post-master's or post-baccalaureate certificate)<br />

• Physician assistant program (certificate, associate, baccalaureate, or master's program)<br />

• Dental school<br />

Scholars attending medical school are expected <strong>to</strong> complete residency programs in one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>following</strong> specialties:<br />

• Family medicine<br />

• General pediatrics<br />

• General internal medicine<br />

• Obstetrics/gynecology<br />

• Psychiatry<br />

• Rotating internship (DO’s only) with a request <strong>to</strong> complete one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> above specialties<br />

Service Obligation <strong>of</strong> one year <strong>of</strong> service for each year <strong>of</strong> support (two year minimum). Required <strong>to</strong> provide primary care services in a<br />

high-priority HPSA in <strong>the</strong> US, at sites approved by <strong>the</strong> PHS. Application deadline due <strong>the</strong> last Friday in March.<br />

NMF Scholarships<br />

National Medical Fellowships, Inc., is a non-pr<strong>of</strong>it organization committed <strong>to</strong> increasing opportunities in medicine for minority<br />

students by helping <strong>the</strong>m overcome financial barriers. Awards are open <strong>to</strong> African-Americans, mainland Puer<strong>to</strong> Ricans, Mexican-<br />

Americans, and Native Americans who are enrolled in accredited schools <strong>of</strong> allopathic or osteopathic medicine in <strong>the</strong> United States.<br />

Award recipients must be U.S. citizens. <strong>The</strong> need-based <strong>scholarships</strong> are awarded <strong>to</strong> students enrolled in <strong>the</strong> first and second years <strong>of</strong><br />

medical school. <strong>The</strong>se awards are based on financial need, cost <strong>of</strong> education, and receipt <strong>of</strong> additional <strong>scholarships</strong> and grants. In<br />

addition <strong>to</strong> its need-based <strong>scholarships</strong>, NMF administers a number <strong>of</strong> special award and fellowship programs that recognize and<br />
