Fields <strong>of</strong> Study: <strong>The</strong> Foundation focuses on <strong>the</strong> <strong>following</strong> preferred fields <strong>of</strong> study for awarding <strong>scholarships</strong>:<br />

security studies, military his<strong>to</strong>ry, government relations, engineering, computer science, physics, ma<strong>the</strong>matics,<br />

business (as it relates <strong>to</strong> national security or defense), law (as it relates <strong>to</strong> national security or defense),<br />

international relations, political science, economics. O<strong>the</strong>rs will be considered if <strong>the</strong> applicant can successfully<br />

demonstrate relevance <strong>to</strong> a career in <strong>the</strong> areas <strong>of</strong> national security or defense.<br />

Selection Criteria : Awards will be based on academic achievement, participation in defense and national<br />

security activities, field <strong>of</strong> study, work experience, statements <strong>of</strong> objectives, recommendations, and financial<br />

need. Awards are made without regard <strong>to</strong> race, creed, color, or religion. HORIZONS reserves <strong>the</strong> right <strong>to</strong> revise,<br />

suspend, or discontinue this program without notice.<br />

Deadline, Application, Notification: Completed applications, essays, recommendations, and transcripts must be<br />

received no later than November 1 if applying for assistance for <strong>the</strong> <strong>following</strong> Spring semester and no later than<br />

July 1 if applying for assistance for <strong>the</strong> <strong>following</strong> Fall semester.<br />

This program is run solely through <strong>the</strong> LNESC national <strong>of</strong>fice. Qualified applicants are chosen through a very<br />

rigorous selection process by members <strong>of</strong> LNESC’s scholarship committee. Only those preparing <strong>to</strong> enter <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

sophomore year at an accredited institution and having declared majors in Business or Engineering are eligible.<br />

This unique scholarship program is <strong>of</strong>fered by <strong>the</strong> New England Employee Benefits Council <strong>to</strong> full-time<br />

students, undergraduate and graduate. <strong>The</strong> NEEBC primary function is <strong>to</strong> advance knowledge and education<br />

about issues in <strong>the</strong> employee benefits field. <strong>The</strong> intent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scholarship is <strong>to</strong> encourage students <strong>to</strong> consider <strong>the</strong><br />

employee benefits field for career opportunities. Interested students should be considering careers in such areas<br />

as: Health Care Program Design; Pension Plan Design; Pension Plan Design, Implementation or<br />

Administration; Retirement Strategies; ERISA and Legal Aspects <strong>of</strong> Employee Benefits; Work/Life Programs;<br />

Health Risk Management; Institutional investing <strong>of</strong> Retirement Savings; Multi-employer Plans; Workers<br />

Compensation; Actuarial and Underwriting Analysis; and Employee Benefits Communications.<br />

<strong>The</strong> NEEBC Scholarship Program will issue an annual award <strong>of</strong> up <strong>to</strong> $5,000. supplementing o<strong>the</strong>r formal<br />

programs, but will not exceed <strong>the</strong> annual tuition fee and on-campus college room and board charges. <strong>The</strong><br />

Awards will be renewed annually for <strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> time normally required <strong>to</strong> earn a degree, but will in no<br />

instance exceed four years.<br />

Awards will be based on demonstrated educational performance and benefit career aspirations and goals. Some<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> criteria for determining awards are: specific benefit-related study, activities and goals; school and<br />

community activities; work experience; future potential and academic performance.
