Fields of Study: The Foundation focuses on the following preferred fields of study for awarding scholarships:
security studies, military history, government relations, engineering, computer science, physics, mathematics,
business (as it relates to national security or defense), law (as it relates to national security or defense),
international relations, political science, economics. Others will be considered if the applicant can successfully
demonstrate relevance to a career in the areas of national security or defense.
Selection Criteria : Awards will be based on academic achievement, participation in defense and national
security activities, field of study, work experience, statements of objectives, recommendations, and financial
need. Awards are made without regard to race, creed, color, or religion. HORIZONS reserves the right to revise,
suspend, or discontinue this program without notice.
Deadline, Application, Notification: Completed applications, essays, recommendations, and transcripts must be
received no later than November 1 if applying for assistance for the following Spring semester and no later than
July 1 if applying for assistance for the following Fall semester.

This program is run solely through the LNESC national office. Qualified applicants are chosen through a very
rigorous selection process by members of LNESC’s scholarship committee. Only those preparing to enter their
sophomore year at an accredited institution and having declared majors in Business or Engineering are eligible.

This unique scholarship program is offered by the New England Employee Benefits Council to full-time
students, undergraduate and graduate. The NEEBC primary function is to advance knowledge and education
about issues in the employee benefits field. The intent of the scholarship is to encourage students to consider the
employee benefits field for career opportunities. Interested students should be considering careers in such areas
as: Health Care Program Design; Pension Plan Design; Pension Plan Design, Implementation or
Administration; Retirement Strategies; ERISA and Legal Aspects of Employee Benefits; Work/Life Programs;
Health Risk Management; Institutional investing of Retirement Savings; Multi-employer Plans; Workers
Compensation; Actuarial and Underwriting Analysis; and Employee Benefits Communications.
The NEEBC Scholarship Program will issue an annual award of up to $5,000. supplementing other formal
programs, but will not exceed the annual tuition fee and on-campus college room and board charges. The
Awards will be renewed annually for the amount of time normally required to earn a degree, but will in no
instance exceed four years.
Awards will be based on demonstrated educational performance and benefit career aspirations and goals. Some
of the criteria for determining awards are: specific benefit-related study, activities and goals; school and
community activities; work experience; future potential and academic performance.
