Applicants must meet <strong>the</strong> five <strong>following</strong> requirements <strong>to</strong> apply for a scholarship through <strong>the</strong> Hispanic Scholarship Fund. You can only<br />

apply if you meet ALL five general eligibility requirements.<br />

o Be <strong>of</strong> Hispanic Heritage: persons descended from Mexican, Puer<strong>to</strong> Rican, Cuban, Dominican, Central American<br />

(excluding Belize), South American (excluding Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana), or o<strong>the</strong>r Spanish cultures<br />

o Be a US citizen OR legal permanent resident with a valid permanent resident card or passport stamped I-551<br />

o Have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale (or <strong>the</strong> equivalent)<br />

o Be pursuing or plan <strong>to</strong> pursue your first undergraduate or graduate degree<br />

o Must apply for federal financial aid using <strong>the</strong> Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)<br />

Additional restrictions or requirements may apply <strong>to</strong> specific HSF-administered scholarship programs. Please carefully check <strong>the</strong><br />

COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (Aug. 1 – Oct. 16)<br />

Research Training Fellowships for Medical Students<br />

<strong>The</strong> fellowship program provides support <strong>to</strong> medical students for an intensive year <strong>of</strong> fundamental research at any academic or notfor-pr<strong>of</strong>it<br />

research institution in <strong>the</strong> United States (except NIH) <strong>to</strong> encourage medical students <strong>to</strong> pursue biomedical research careers.<br />

Stipends will be $16,000. Students may apply during any year <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir medical studies and may <strong>have</strong> prior research experience,<br />

although this is not required. <strong>The</strong> fellowships are not available <strong>to</strong> students enrolled in M.D./Ph.D., Ph.D. or Sc.D. programs or those<br />

who hold <strong>the</strong> Ph.D. or Sc.D. degree. Applicants will be evaluated on <strong>the</strong>ir demonstrated superior scholarship and promise for future<br />

achievement in biomedical research. <strong>The</strong> Institute plans <strong>to</strong> award up <strong>to</strong> 60 new fellowships each year on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> a national<br />

competition. Awards will be announced in April. Toward <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year in research, fellows may apply for continued fellowship<br />

support, ei<strong>the</strong>r for a second year <strong>of</strong> research or for support for up <strong>to</strong> two years, while study <strong>to</strong>ward <strong>the</strong> M.D. degree is completed. A<br />

small number <strong>of</strong> continued fellowships are awarded each year. <strong>The</strong>y will provide an annual stipend as well as an $15,000 cost-<strong>of</strong>education<br />

Provides financial assistance for American Indian and Alaska Native (Federally recognized only) students only<br />

obligations and payback requirements that <strong>the</strong> recipient incurs upon acceptance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scholarship funding.<br />
