To be eligible for a fellowship, you must be an enrolled member of a federally-recognized American Indian tribe or Alaskan Native Group, or possess one-fourth degree (federally-recognized) Indian blood; be a full-time medical student at an AMA accredited school; and be in need of financial need (apply for federal financial aid and campus-based aid at your college). Application packets are available beginning in January. Applications are generally due by June. It is through one of these offices that you can receive nomination and application information. It is the Office of the Dean or the Dean's Designate that must submit nominations to the AMA Foundation for the scholarships. Here is a short synopsis of our scholarships that may apply to you. • AMA Foundation Minority Scholars Award - In collaboration with the Minority Affairs Consortium (MAC), with support from the Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative, the AMA Foundation offers the Minority Scholars Award. The Minority Scholars Awards are $10,000 scholarships and ten will be awarded annually. You must be a rising second- or third-year student. Eligible students of minority background include African American/Black, Native American, Native Hawaiian, Alaska Native and Hispanic/Latino. Each medical school is invited to submit up to two nominees. Applications available: February Nominations due: mid- April • AMA Foundation Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship - In 2003, the AMA Foundation created the National Scholarship. In 2006, the name of the scholarship will change from the National Scholarship to the Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship. The $10,000 scholarship rewards rising fourth year medical students. The selection of the recipients will be based on academic achievement and/or financial need. Multiple scholarships, funded by the AMA Foundation, the Audio-Digest Foundation, Johnson F. Hammond, MD Fund, and the Rock Sleyster, MD Fund will be awarded in 2006. There will be several Physicians of Tomorrow scholarships funded by the AMA Foundation. The recipient of the one Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship funded by the Audio-Digest Foundation should have an interest in "the communication of science." Students who have an interest in the "communication of science" are students who embody the traits of the Hippocratic Oath. Activities such as mentoring and/or teaching are examples of "communication of science." The recipient of the one Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship funded by the Johnson F. Hammond, MD Fund should have an interest in and commitment to a career in medical journalism. The recipient of the one Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship funded by the Rock Sleyster, MD, Fund should have an interest in and commitment to a career in psychiatry. Each medical school may submit one to three nominees for these awards. The number of nominations allocated per school is based on enrollment. Applications available: February Nominations due: End of May • AMA Foundation Scholars Fund – The AMA Alliance - the largest volunteer arm of the AMA raises money each year for medical schools to distribute to deserving students of their choice. The AMA Foundation tracks these donations for medical schools independently in separate accounts. Medical schools receive notification of funds available in March.
Each dean or dean's designate chooses scholarship recipients based on the funds available. Each Scholars Fund award must be at least $1,000. If a school does not have $1,000 in their account, the AMA Foundation will let funds accumulate until one full scholarship can be fulfilled. Medical School submits recipients to Foundation: July 1 • The Arthur N. Wilson, MD, Scholarship – One $5000 scholarship is awarded to a medical student who grew up in Southeast Alaska. Students may apply directly to the Foundation for this scholarship opportunity. Birch Award: The Carroll L. Birch Award, sponsored by the Chicago Branch of the American Medical Women's Association, is presented for the best research paper written by a student member of AMWA. The paper may have been previously published. The recipient of the Award receives a cash prize of $500. An article noting the award winner will appear in one of the Association's publications and an abstract of the scientific paper may be published in AMWA's Journal. The award is presented only if there is a deserving manuscript. The papers are blindly reviewed; therefore, provide all personal information on the title page (i.e. title, author(s), and entrant's name, address, and phone number). The title should appear at the top of the abstract and on the paper itself. An abstract of 250 words or less is required with the submission of the paper. Note: If the entrant is not first author, a cover letter from the principal investigator describing the entrant's contributions to the work must accompany the entry. To enter, send three copies of the manuscript, a letter from your faculty research sponsor, and a cover letter stating your medical school, expected date of graduation, and permanent mailing address to the address below. The deadline for submission of manuscripts is June 30. Glasgow Award is presented to an AMWA student member for the best essay of approximately 1,000 words identifying a woman physician who has been a significant role model and mentor. Criteria includes community service; work, research and participation in women's health issues; participation in AMWA activities; and participation in women in medicine or medical student group(s) other than AMWA. Applications are mailed from January through mid-April of each year.
