Each dean or dean's designate chooses scholarship recipients based on <strong>the</strong> funds available. Each Scholars Fund award<br />

must be at least $1,000. If a school does not <strong>have</strong> $1,000 in <strong>the</strong>ir account, <strong>the</strong> AMA Foundation will let funds accumulate<br />

until one full scholarship can be fulfilled.<br />

o Carroll L. Birch Award:<br />

<strong>The</strong> Carroll L. Birch Award, sponsored by <strong>the</strong> Chicago Branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> American Medical Women's Association, is<br />

presented for <strong>the</strong> best research paper written by a student member <strong>of</strong> AMWA. <strong>The</strong> paper may <strong>have</strong> <strong>been</strong> previously<br />

published. <strong>The</strong> recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Award receives a cash prize <strong>of</strong> $500. An article noting <strong>the</strong> award winner will appear<br />

in one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Association's publications and an abstract <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scientific paper may be published in AMWA's Journal.<br />

<strong>The</strong> award is presented only if <strong>the</strong>re is a deserving manuscript.<br />

<strong>The</strong> papers are blindly reviewed; <strong>the</strong>refore, provide all personal information on <strong>the</strong> title page (i.e. title, author(s), and<br />

entrant's name, address, and phone number). <strong>The</strong> title should appear at <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>p <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> abstract and on <strong>the</strong> paper itself.<br />

An abstract <strong>of</strong> 250 words or less is required with <strong>the</strong> submission <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> paper. Note: If <strong>the</strong> entrant is not first author,<br />

a cover letter from <strong>the</strong> principal investiga<strong>to</strong>r describing <strong>the</strong> entrant's contributions <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> work must accompany <strong>the</strong><br />

entry.<br />

To enter, send three copies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> manuscript, a letter from your faculty research sponsor, and a cover letter stating<br />

your medical school, expected date <strong>of</strong> graduation, and permanent mailing address <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> address below.<br />

<strong>The</strong> deadline for submission <strong>of</strong> manuscripts is June 30.<br />

o Janet M. Glasgow Essay Award<br />

<strong>The</strong> Janet M. Glasgow Award is presented <strong>to</strong> an AMWA student member for <strong>the</strong> best essay <strong>of</strong> approximately 1,000<br />

words identifying a woman physician who has <strong>been</strong> a significant role model and men<strong>to</strong>r. <strong>The</strong> author <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> winning<br />

essay receives $1,000 and a plaque presented at AMWA's annual meeting.<br />

o Wilhelm-Frankowski Scholarship<br />

AMWA <strong>of</strong>fers <strong>the</strong> Wilhelm-Frankowski Medical Education Scholarship <strong>of</strong> $4,000 <strong>to</strong> an AMWA student member.<br />

Medical students attending an accredited U.S. medical or osteopathic medical school in <strong>the</strong>ir first, second and third<br />

year are eligible <strong>to</strong> apply. Criteria includes community service; work, research and participation in women's health<br />

issues; participation in AMWA activities; and participation in women in medicine or medical student group(s) o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

than AMWA.<br />

Applications are mailed from January through mid-April <strong>of</strong> each year. Contact Marie Glanz at AMWA for fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

information and <strong>to</strong> be placed on <strong>the</strong> mailing list <strong>to</strong> receive a scholarship application in January.
