Graduate Fellowships
The American Indian Graduate Center provides scholarship aid to American Indian and Alaskan Native students from federallyrecognized
U.S. tribes. To be eligible for a fellowship, you must be an enrolled member of a federally-recognized American Indian
tribe or Alaskan Native Group, or possess one-fourth degree (federally-recognized) Indian blood; be a full-time medical student at an
AMA accredited school; and be in need of financial need (apply for federal financial aid and campus-based aid at your college).
Application packets are available beginning in January. Applications are generally due by June.

Application process: In late February of each year, the AMA Foundation will send a detailed packet of scholarship information to
each medical school's Office of the Dean, Office of Student Affairs and Office of Financial Aid. It is through one of these offices
that you can receive nomination and application information. It is the Office of the Dean or the Dean's Designate that must submit
nominations to the AMA Foundation for the scholarships. Here is a short synopsis of our scholarships that may apply to you.
• AMA Foundation Minority Scholars Award - In collaboration with the Minority Affairs Consortium (MAC), with
support from the Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative, the AMA Foundation offers the Minority Scholars Award. The
Minority Scholars Awards are $10,000 scholarships and ten will be awarded annually. You must be a rising second- or
third-year student. Eligible students of minority background include African American/Black, Native American, Native
Hawaiian, Alaska Native and Hispanic/Latino. Each medical school is invited to submit up to two nominees.

• AMA Foundation Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship - In 2003, the AMA Foundation created the National
Scholarship. In 2006, the name of the scholarship will change from the National Scholarship to the Physicians of
Tomorrow Scholarship. The $10,000 scholarship rewards rising fourth year medical students. The selection of the
recipients will be based on academic achievement and/or financial need. Multiple scholarships, funded by the AMA
Foundation, the Audio-Digest Foundation, Johnson F. Hammond, MD Fund, and the Rock Sleyster, MD Fund will be
awarded in 2006.
There will be several Physicians of Tomorrow scholarships funded by the AMA Foundation.
The recipient of the one Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship funded by the Audio-Digest Foundation should have an
interest in "the communication of science." Students who have an interest in the "communication of science" are students
who embody the traits of the Hippocratic Oath. Activities such as mentoring and/or teaching are examples of
"communication of science."
The recipient of the one Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship funded by the Johnson F. Hammond, MD Fund should
have an interest in and commitment to a career in medical journalism.
The recipient of the one Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship funded by the Rock Sleyster, MD, Fund should have an
interest in and commitment to a career in psychiatry.
Each medical school may submit one to three nominees for these awards. The number of nominations allocated per
school is based on enrollment.

• AMA Foundation Scholars Fund – The AMA Alliance - the largest volunteer arm of the AMA raises money each year
for medical schools to distribute to deserving students of their choice. The AMA Foundation tracks these donations for
medical schools independently in separate accounts. Medical schools receive notification of funds available in March.
