Graduate Fellowships<br />

<strong>The</strong> American Indian Graduate Center provides scholarship aid <strong>to</strong> American Indian and Alaskan Native students from federallyrecognized<br />

U.S. tribes. To be eligible for a fellowship, you must be an enrolled member <strong>of</strong> a federally-recognized American Indian<br />

tribe or Alaskan Native Group, or possess one-fourth degree (federally-recognized) Indian blood; be a full-time medical student at an<br />

AMA accredited school; and be in need <strong>of</strong> financial need (apply for federal financial aid and campus-based aid at your college).<br />

Application packets are available beginning in January. Applications are generally due by June.<br />

Application process: In late February <strong>of</strong> each year, <strong>the</strong> AMA Foundation will send a detailed packet <strong>of</strong> scholarship information <strong>to</strong><br />

each medical school's Office <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dean, Office <strong>of</strong> Student Affairs and Office <strong>of</strong> Financial Aid. It is through one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>of</strong>fices<br />

that you can receive nomination and application information. It is <strong>the</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dean or <strong>the</strong> Dean's Designate that must submit<br />

nominations <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> AMA Foundation for <strong>the</strong> <strong>scholarships</strong>. Here is a short synopsis <strong>of</strong> our <strong>scholarships</strong> that may apply <strong>to</strong> you.<br />

• AMA Foundation Minority Scholars Award - In collaboration with <strong>the</strong> Minority Affairs Consortium (MAC), with<br />

support from <strong>the</strong> Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative, <strong>the</strong> AMA Foundation <strong>of</strong>fers <strong>the</strong> Minority Scholars Award. <strong>The</strong><br />

Minority Scholars Awards are $10,000 <strong>scholarships</strong> and ten will be awarded annually. You must be a rising second- or<br />

third-year student. Eligible students <strong>of</strong> minority background include African American/Black, Native American, Native<br />

Hawaiian, Alaska Native and Hispanic/Latino. Each medical school is invited <strong>to</strong> submit up <strong>to</strong> two nominees.<br />

Applications available: February<br />

Nominations due: mid- April<br />

• AMA Foundation Physicians <strong>of</strong> Tomorrow Scholarship - In 2003, <strong>the</strong> AMA Foundation created <strong>the</strong> National<br />

Scholarship. In 2006, <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scholarship will change from <strong>the</strong> National Scholarship <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Physicians <strong>of</strong><br />

Tomorrow Scholarship. <strong>The</strong> $10,000 scholarship rewards rising fourth year medical students. <strong>The</strong> selection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

recipients will be based on academic achievement and/or financial need. Multiple <strong>scholarships</strong>, funded by <strong>the</strong> AMA<br />

Foundation, <strong>the</strong> Audio-Digest Foundation, Johnson F. Hammond, MD Fund, and <strong>the</strong> Rock Sleyster, MD Fund will be<br />

awarded in 2006.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re will be several Physicians <strong>of</strong> Tomorrow <strong>scholarships</strong> funded by <strong>the</strong> AMA Foundation.<br />

<strong>The</strong> recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> one Physicians <strong>of</strong> Tomorrow Scholarship funded by <strong>the</strong> Audio-Digest Foundation should <strong>have</strong> an<br />

interest in "<strong>the</strong> communication <strong>of</strong> science." Students who <strong>have</strong> an interest in <strong>the</strong> "communication <strong>of</strong> science" are students<br />

who embody <strong>the</strong> traits <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hippocratic Oath. Activities such as men<strong>to</strong>ring and/or teaching are examples <strong>of</strong><br />

"communication <strong>of</strong> science."<br />

<strong>The</strong> recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> one Physicians <strong>of</strong> Tomorrow Scholarship funded by <strong>the</strong> Johnson F. Hammond, MD Fund should<br />

<strong>have</strong> an interest in and commitment <strong>to</strong> a career in medical journalism.<br />

<strong>The</strong> recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> one Physicians <strong>of</strong> Tomorrow Scholarship funded by <strong>the</strong> Rock Sleyster, MD, Fund should <strong>have</strong> an<br />

interest in and commitment <strong>to</strong> a career in psychiatry.<br />

Each medical school may submit one <strong>to</strong> three nominees for <strong>the</strong>se awards. <strong>The</strong> number <strong>of</strong> nominations allocated per<br />

school is based on enrollment.<br />

• AMA Foundation Scholars Fund – <strong>The</strong> AMA Alliance - <strong>the</strong> largest volunteer arm <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AMA raises money each year<br />

for medical schools <strong>to</strong> distribute <strong>to</strong> deserving students <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir choice. <strong>The</strong> AMA Foundation tracks <strong>the</strong>se donations for<br />

medical schools independently in separate accounts. Medical schools receive notification <strong>of</strong> funds available in March.
