o John A. Hartford/AFAR Medical Student Geriatric Scholars Program<br />

To encourage medical students -- particularly budding researchers -- <strong>to</strong> consider geriatrics as a career, <strong>the</strong><br />

Medical Student Geriatric Scholars Program awards short-term <strong>scholarships</strong> through a national competition.<br />

<strong>The</strong> program provides an opportunity for <strong>the</strong>se students <strong>to</strong> train at an acclaimed center <strong>of</strong> excellence in<br />

geriatrics. Medical students who want <strong>to</strong> apply must <strong>have</strong> completed at least one year <strong>of</strong> medical school at <strong>the</strong><br />

start <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> award. Applications are evaluated on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong>:<br />

(1) <strong>The</strong> applicant's ability and promise as demonstrated by academic performance, statement <strong>of</strong> purpose, and<br />

letters <strong>of</strong> support;<br />

(2) Interest in geron<strong>to</strong>logical issues as demonstrated by course work, independent study, volunteer activity, etc.;<br />

(3) Interest and potential for success in an academic career; and<br />

(4) Sponsor's plan for scholar's geriatric career men<strong>to</strong>ring.<br />

Each scholar receives a $3,000 stipend. Applications are due February 5.<br />

o Merck/AFAR Research Scholarships in Geriatric Pharmacology for Medical and Pharmacy Students<br />

To develop a corps <strong>of</strong> physicians with an understanding <strong>of</strong> medication use in <strong>the</strong> elderly, <strong>the</strong> Merck Company<br />

Foundation and AFAR created <strong>the</strong> Merck/AFAR Research Scholarships in Geriatric Pharmacology for medical and<br />

pharmacy students. <strong>The</strong>se students will <strong>have</strong> <strong>the</strong> opportunity <strong>to</strong> undertake a two- <strong>to</strong> three-month full-time research<br />

project in geriatric pharmacology, conducted under <strong>the</strong> supervision <strong>of</strong> a faculty men<strong>to</strong>r. All medical and pharmacy<br />

students who want <strong>to</strong> apply must <strong>have</strong> completed at least one year <strong>of</strong> medical school at <strong>the</strong> start <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> award.<br />

Applications are evaluated on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong>:<br />

letters <strong>of</strong> reference;<br />

(3) <strong>The</strong> qualifications <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> designated men<strong>to</strong>r, and his or her endorsement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> research project; and<br />

4) Merit and feasibility <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> proposed project.<br />

Up <strong>to</strong> nine $4,000 <strong>scholarships</strong> will be awarded. Applications are due late January <strong>of</strong> each year.<br />
