o John A. Hartford/AFAR Medical Student Geriatric Scholars Program
To encourage medical students -- particularly budding researchers -- to consider geriatrics as a career, the
Medical Student Geriatric Scholars Program awards short-term scholarships through a national competition.
The program provides an opportunity for these students to train at an acclaimed center of excellence in
geriatrics. Medical students who want to apply must have completed at least one year of medical school at the
start of the award. Applications are evaluated on the basis of:
(1) The applicant's ability and promise as demonstrated by academic performance, statement of purpose, and
letters of support;
(2) Interest in gerontological issues as demonstrated by course work, independent study, volunteer activity, etc.;
(3) Interest and potential for success in an academic career; and
(4) Sponsor's plan for scholar's geriatric career mentoring.
Each scholar receives a $3,000 stipend. Applications are due February 5.

o Merck/AFAR Research Scholarships in Geriatric Pharmacology for Medical and Pharmacy Students
To develop a corps of physicians with an understanding of medication use in the elderly, the Merck Company
Foundation and AFAR created the Merck/AFAR Research Scholarships in Geriatric Pharmacology for medical and
pharmacy students. These students will have the opportunity to undertake a two- to three-month full-time research
project in geriatric pharmacology, conducted under the supervision of a faculty mentor. All medical and pharmacy
students who want to apply must have completed at least one year of medical school at the start of the award.
Applications are evaluated on the basis of:
(1) The applicant's ability and promise as demonstrated by academic performance, statement of purpose, and
letters of reference;
(2) Interest in gerontological issues as demonstrated by course work, independent study, volunteer activity, etc.;
(3) The qualifications of the designated mentor, and his or her endorsement of the research project; and
4) Merit and feasibility of the proposed project.
Up to nine $4,000 scholarships will be awarded. Applications are due late January of each year.
