This direc<strong>to</strong>ry identifies and describes financial aid programs, <strong>scholarships</strong>, fellowships, grants, awards and o<strong>the</strong>r incentives <strong>to</strong> attract<br />

and retain health care personnel in scarcity areas. Entries contain descriptions <strong>of</strong> initiatives from educational institutions, state and<br />

federal loan repayment programs, and o<strong>the</strong>r resources that address <strong>the</strong> problem <strong>of</strong> physician supply in medically underserved areas.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re is a need <strong>to</strong> improve <strong>the</strong> distribution, supply, quality, utilization and efficiency <strong>of</strong> health personnel in underserved areas. This<br />

direc<strong>to</strong>ry was created <strong>to</strong> inform medical students, family medicine residents and practicing family physicians <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> incentives and<br />

opportunities available for health personnel <strong>to</strong> provide basic medical services <strong>to</strong> communities and populations that lack adequate<br />

access <strong>to</strong> primary care services.<br />

Eligibility: All applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents. <strong>The</strong> Existing guidelines reserve fellowships in law, medicine,<br />

and business for women <strong>of</strong> color. Women in medicine are eligible for funding during <strong>the</strong>ir third year <strong>of</strong> medical school. To request an<br />

<strong>The</strong> ACOFP is pleased <strong>to</strong> <strong>of</strong>fer twenty-five (25) $1,000 student <strong>scholarships</strong> <strong>to</strong> osteopathic medical students who meet <strong>the</strong> <strong>following</strong><br />

criteria;<br />

• Currently enrolled in his/her second, third or fourth year <strong>of</strong> accredited osteopathic medical college<br />

• student member <strong>of</strong> ACOFP and active with <strong>the</strong> school ACOFP Student Chapter<br />

• Intend <strong>to</strong> enter an AOA approved family practice residency program<br />

• Submit letters <strong>of</strong> recommendation from each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>following</strong>:<br />

o An AOBFP certified family practice osteopathic physician<br />

o ACOFP Student Chapter Faculty Advisor<br />

o College financial aid <strong>of</strong>fice demonstrating need<br />

o Glenn Foundation/AFAR Scholarships for Research in <strong>the</strong> Biology <strong>of</strong> Aging<br />

Inaugurated in 1994, this scholarship program -- designed <strong>to</strong> attract potential scientists and clinicians <strong>to</strong> aging<br />

research -- provides pre-doc<strong>to</strong>ral, Ph.D. and M.D. students <strong>the</strong> opportunity <strong>to</strong> conduct a three-month research<br />

project. Students will work in an area <strong>of</strong> biomedical research in aging under <strong>the</strong> auspices <strong>of</strong> a men<strong>to</strong>r. All medical<br />

students who want <strong>to</strong> apply must <strong>have</strong> completed at least one year <strong>of</strong> medical school at <strong>the</strong> start <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> award.<br />

Former Glenn/AFAR recipients are not eligible. Applications are evaluated on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong>:<br />

(1) <strong>The</strong> applicant's ability and promise as demonstrated by academic performance, statement <strong>of</strong> purpose, and<br />

letter <strong>of</strong> reference;<br />

(2) Interest in geron<strong>to</strong>logical issues as demonstrated by course work, independent study, volunteer activity, etc.;<br />

(3) <strong>The</strong> qualifications <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> designated men<strong>to</strong>r, and his or her endorsement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> research project and assurance <strong>of</strong><br />

active supervision <strong>of</strong> it; and<br />

(4) Merit and feasibility <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> proposed project.<br />

Each scholarship carries an award <strong>of</strong> $5,500, <strong>of</strong> which $4,000 will go <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> student and $1,500 <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> men<strong>to</strong>r.<br />

Applications are due late February.<br />
