This directory identifies and describes financial aid programs, scholarships, fellowships, grants, awards and other incentives to attract
and retain health care personnel in scarcity areas. Entries contain descriptions of initiatives from educational institutions, state and
federal loan repayment programs, and other resources that address the problem of physician supply in medically underserved areas.
There is a need to improve the distribution, supply, quality, utilization and efficiency of health personnel in underserved areas. This
directory was created to inform medical students, family medicine residents and practicing family physicians of the incentives and
opportunities available for health personnel to provide basic medical services to communities and populations that lack adequate
access to primary care services.

Eligibility: All applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents. The Existing guidelines reserve fellowships in law, medicine,
and business for women of color. Women in medicine are eligible for funding during their third year of medical school. To request an

The ACOFP is pleased to offer twenty-five (25) $1,000 student scholarships to osteopathic medical students who meet the following
criteria;
• Currently enrolled in his/her second, third or fourth year of accredited osteopathic medical college
• student member of ACOFP and active with the school ACOFP Student Chapter
• Intend to enter an AOA approved family practice residency program
• Submit letters of recommendation from each of the following:
o An AOBFP certified family practice osteopathic physician
o ACOFP Student Chapter Faculty Advisor
o College financial aid office demonstrating need

o Glenn Foundation/AFAR Scholarships for Research in the Biology of Aging
Inaugurated in 1994, this scholarship program -- designed to attract potential scientists and clinicians to aging
research -- provides pre-doctoral, Ph.D. and M.D. students the opportunity to conduct a three-month research
project. Students will work in an area of biomedical research in aging under the auspices of a mentor. All medical
students who want to apply must have completed at least one year of medical school at the start of the award.
Former Glenn/AFAR recipients are not eligible. Applications are evaluated on the basis of:
(1) The applicant's ability and promise as demonstrated by academic performance, statement of purpose, and
letter of reference;
(2) Interest in gerontological issues as demonstrated by course work, independent study, volunteer activity, etc.;
(3) The qualifications of the designated mentor, and his or her endorsement of the research project and assurance of
active supervision of it; and
(4) Merit and feasibility of the proposed project.
Each scholarship carries an award of $5,500, of which $4,000 will go to the student and $1,500 to the mentor.
