Dr. Jerry Mullin joined the University of New England 

(UNE) as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry in 1990, 

as a member of the Department of Life Sciences. In 

1998, when then-Dean Jacque Carter created the 

Department of Chemistry and Physics, Dr. Mullin was 

appointed chair of the new department, and charged 

with the responsibility of leading the development of 

new academic programs in biochemistry and chemistry. 

Dr. Mullin served as department chair for 10 years, 

during that period the department grew from 5 full-time 

members to 17, and occupied new space in the Alfond 

Center and Morgane Hall. Also during that period, the 

department instituted undergraduate degree programs in 

biochemistry, chemistry, and chemistry/secondary 

education, as well as the two-year pre-pharmacy 

curriculum. Currently Professor of Chemistry, Dr. 

Mullin primarily teaches courses in General Chemistry, 

Quantitative Chemical Analysis, and Instrumental 

Methods of Analysis. 

Dr. Mullin’s scholarly activity has taken three distinct, 

yet related tracks: course and curriculum development 

in analytical chemistry, environmental analysis

(focused on the determination of heavy metal 

distributions in natural systems), and applications of 

luminescence spectroscopy. All of the aforementioned 

areas make use of his training in analytical chemistry, 

and the two research areas make extensive use of his 

training as a spectroscopist. 

Early in his teaching career, Dr. Mullin became 

interested in the applications of computers in analytical 

chemistry courses. His seminal 1990 paper in the 

Journal of Chemical Education (JCE), coauthored with 

Dr. Bob Eierman, his analytical chemist colleague at 

the time, was one of the first papers describing the 

extensive use of spreadsheets in an analytical chemistry 

course. Today, most Quantitative Analysis texts 

incorporate a large number of spreadsheet exercises, 

and often have sections of chapters devoted to the use 

of spreadsheets for data manipulation, reporting, and 

graphing. Dr. Mullin’s continuing work in this area 

includes development of several experiments in the 

Quantitative Analysis course that involve direct data 

acquisition into Excel. Early work in the area of direct 

data acquisition into a spreadsheet was described in a 

1995 paper in JCE. 

Upon arriving at UNE, Dr Mullin discovered a dearth 

of analytical instrumentation. One of the first 

instruments he acquired was an atomic absorption 

spectrometer, an instrument that makes possible the 

measurement of metal concentrations in samples. The 

first research projects he undertook at UNE involved 

the determination of heavy metals in environmental 

samples, and several undergraduate students took part 

in this work. In 1993, Dr. Mullin was awarded support 

from the US Fish and Wildlife Service to join the 

Fourth BERPAC cruise, a jointly sponsored Russian- 

American research effort aimed at continuing a longterm 

investigation of ecosystem dynamics in the Bering 

and Chukchi Seas. During the cruise, sediment samples 

were collected from as many sampling locations as 

possible. The collected samples then were analyzed at 

UNE by a series of undergraduate students. The results 

of this work provide baseline data for the amounts of 

the toxic heavy metals cadmium and lead. Other UNE 

students have worked on environmental analysis 

projects aimed at determining heavy metal distributions 

in areas such as Biddeford Pool and the Tyler Brook 

watershed in Kennebunkport. 

Dr. Mullin’s Ph.D. work in analytical chemistry at the 

University of New Hampshire was focused on the use 

of chemiluminescence, bioluminescence, and 

fluorescence as the bases for construction of chemical 

sensors. Fluorescence, an example of a phenomenon 

referred to as photoluminescence, is the process by 

which a sample absorbs light of some wavelength and 

then emits most of the absorbed energy as light of a 

slightly longer wavelength. The most common example 

of fluorescence is observed when a sample is 

illuminated with ultraviolet light (to which our eyes do 

not respond, so the sample does not appear to be 

illuminated) with subsequent emission of visible light. 

Chemiluminescence is the process in which a chemical 

reaction produces light, while bioluminescence is 

chemiluminescence observed in living systems. In a 

sense, Dr. Mullin’s research started to come full circle 

back to the applications of luminescence when he was 

awarded an NSF grant for the purchase of a 

fluorescence spectrometer in the mid-1990s. The 

acquisition of this instrument made it possible for Dr. 

Mullin to resume his work in luminescence, and at 

about the same time, he began a collaboration with Dr. 

Hank Tracy, a synthetic inorganic chemist at the 

University of Southern Maine. In their collaborative 

work, Drs. Mullin and Tracy are concerned with the 

synthesis and characterization of new members of a 

class of chemical compounds called metalloles.

Jerome Mullin and NSF grant focus of Gazette, Courier 

stories: A $360,000 NSF grant awarded to a five-member 

team of scientists from the University of New England,

University of Southern Maine, and Saint Joseph’s College to 

continue studying florescent light while offering research 

opportunities to undergraduate students was the focus of a 

story in the weekly newspaper, the Gazette on April 24, 

2009. The team of researchers is developing organic 

materials that give off a variety of colors. The molecules 

under investigation hold promise for use in opto-electronic 

devices such as organic light-emitting diodes and chemical 

sensors. “It’s been a really fruitful collaboration because our 

training is different, so we each bring something important to 

the project.” Said Jerome Mullin, Ph.D., UNE Professor of 

Chemistry. The story was also featured in the Biddeford- 

Saco-OOB Courier April 30 th .

Team leader for an international study involving research 

collaborators in 5 countries examining competencies critical 

to on-line learner success. Currently, a worldwide validation 

study of proposed competencies is being conducted with 

1,000 online providers and students. Once validated and 

finalized, a set of on-line learner competencies will be 

published in book form in late 2010. 



Conducted drawing workshops with the Environmental 

Studies students of Dr. Michelle Steen-Adams class. The 

workshops were to assist students in translating their 

observations of plants into drawings that were later 

incorporated into book projects made while working with the 

book artist Rebecca Goodale.
