On the Fighting Sioux: North Dakota tallied its first win over a Division I Football
Championship Subdivision (FCS) opponent on Thursday evening when it defeated Idaho
State, 38-35, on the road in Pocatello, Idaho. Josh Murray (Pepin, Wis.) led the Sioux
offensive with a career-high 204 yards on 23 carries with one touchdown. Murray scored
on a 26-yard run and added a 25-yard kick return. Senior quarterback Danny Freund
(Kenosha, Wis.) went 20-for-26 passing with 237 yards and three touchdowns. He
connected with Brady Trenbeath (Cavalier, N.D.), Brandon Brady (Bloomington, Minn.),
and Marcus Tibesar (St. Paul, Minn.) in the end zone and handed off to Murray and
Brady to help the Sioux to the three-point victory over the Bengals. At the end of ISU’s first
possession, senior defensive back Drake Otto (Kenosha, Wis.) had already logged five
assisted tackles and one solo. By the end of the second quarter, he had added a fumble
recovery and two quarterback hurries.
The Sioux led the Bengals by 21 points before ISU could put a mark on the scoreboard.
At one point, Idaho State turned a 31-7 deficit to a 31-28 ballgame in three-straight drives.
Even with the comeback, the Bengal’s were held off as the Sioux scored again to take a
10-point lead that ISU couldn’t overcome.
The series with SEL: This marks the first time that the Fighting Sioux and the Lions
have met at the 50-yard line.
On the Lions: Last week, Southeastern Louisiana fell to 2-2 overall despite another
400-plus yard offensive performance. Louisiana Tech used two Southeastern turnovers to
break the game open with a 10-0 third quarter and improved to 2-1 in the victory. The two
teams combined for 885 total yards in a wild game between the two former Gulf States
Conference rivals who were meeting for the first time since 1985.
Southeastern junior quarterback Brian Babin set new single-game career highs for
completions and attempts, hitting 32 of 59 passes for 322 yards. The 300-yard performance
was the second in as many weeks for the St. Amant native, who threw for a career-high
330 yards versus South Dakota last Saturday.
Sophomore wide receiver Andre Cryer caught seven passes for a career-high 138 yards
and a touchdown to lead the Lions. Cryer’s touchdown catch came from junior wide receiver
Chris Wilson, who completed his first career pass, while also finishing with six catches
and 64 yards.
Freshman Simmie Yarborough also caught seven balls for 83 yards for Southeastern.
Senior running back Jay Lucas amassed 99 total yards in the contest, as Southeastern
put up a season-high 440 yards and recorded 23 first downs.
Southeastern was led defensively by sophomore linebacker Mark Newbill, who finished
with eight tackles, two forced fumbles, 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack. Junior defensive
back Brian Reynolds also had eight stops for the Lions, while junior Tommy Connors,
sophomore Ryan Godare and freshman Devin Jones had seven tackles each.
In the weeks prior, the Lions won their first game against Alcorn State, 34-28 before falling
to Mississippi State, 34-10. SLU bounced back in Week 3 with a tight, 31-30 victory over
South Dakota.
SEL head coach Mike lucas: When Mike Lucas was named the 14th head
football coach in Southeastern Louisiana history on December 14, 2006, his main focus was
to quickly stabilize a young program that was affected by two seasons of distractions.
But with his many years of experience in the Southland Conference, learning under some
of the league’s legendary mentors, and gaining the trust and admiration of his players,
Lucas has the Lions back on track as they enter their fourth season in one of the top
football conferences in the Football Championship Subdivision.
Officially named head football coach at the end of the 2006 campaign after serving the
previous two seasons as defensive coordinator, Lucas is familiar with the ingredients that
are needed to be a consistent winner in the Southland Conference.
Lucas took over the program on an interim basis for the final three games of the 2006 season
before embarking on his first full season as head coach in 2007. With a new quarterback
and tremendous youth on the defensive side of the ball, the Lions showed dramatic
improvement and played with the heart and determination needed to win championships.
Southeastern finished the 2007 season with a 3-8 record, but the foundation for a successful
gridiron future was laid under Lucas’ guidance.
Offensively in 2007, Southeastern relied on the play of All-SLC running back Jay Lucas
along with first-year starter Brian Babin, who made great strides during the season at
quarterback and fifth-year wideout Byron Ross, who provided the Lions on of the top deep
threats in the league.
With an extremely youthful defense, featuring as many as seven true freshmen on the field
at one time, Southeastern displayed Lucas’ hard-nosed style of play in every game during
the season.
Highlighted by Tommy Connors, a sophomore and one of the elder statesmen on the
defensive side, and true freshman Mark Newbill, the Lions finished near the top of the
FCS national rankings in turnover margin.
On the road: North Dakota has won 23 of its last 35 games on the road. The Fighting
Sioux were perfect last season in away games until the final game of the season where
they lost to Grand Valley State, 21-14. Over the last six seasons, the Sioux are 5-1 when
it comes to their second road game of the year.
MURRAY - Stepping up and making the plays: Josh Murray ran for
another career-high as he helped lead the Fighting Sioux to a 38-35 victory over Idaho
State. On foot, the sophomore from Pepin, Wis. totaled 204 yards on 23 carries with one
touchdown and averaged 8.9 yards/carry. His touchdown came off of a 26-yard run on the
first play of the second quarter and his longest carry came later that quarter on the Sioux’s
second possession. When the whistle sounded at the half, Murray had already gained
120 yards on 11 carries with an average of 10.9 yards/carry. Twenty-five of Murry’s total
yardage came off of a kickoff return midway through the second quarter. His 204 yards
more than doubled Idaho State’s total 83 net yards and was four times as much as any
other UND running back. In addition to his ground yardage, Murray also caught one pass
for nine yards.
Sack city: North Dakota has added another two notches on the Sack City board. In
Thursday’s game against Idaho State, Ty Boyle (International Falls, Minn.) and Ward
DeMontigny (Washburn, N.D.) landed their first sacks of the season and combined for a
total 24 yards lost.
After being held without a sack in its first two games, North Dakota finally took down an
opposing quarterback, and they did so three times. Senior defensive lineman Mike Ebanks
(Orlando, Fla.), senior outside linebacker Tyson Giles (Warren, Minn.), and freshman
outside linebacker Brad Kelley (Coon Rapids, Minn.) tallied a sack apiece. It was the first
career sack for Kelley, the second for Giles, and the third for Ebanks.
trenbeath - great touch on that pass: Senior WR Brady Trenbeath
(Cavalier, N.D.) grabbed another nine passes in Saturday’s game to push his season total
to 29 and his career total to 143. He stands exactly 100 passes behind Weston Dressler
(2004-07). (See list on page 3.)
On Sept. 6, Trenbeath reached the century mark in regular-season receptions made.
With a total of 408 receiving yards on the season already, the senior wide receiver sits in
the No. 6 spot on the all-time list. Another 175 yards and he will move into the No. 5 spot
ahead of Dan Grossman (2002-05). (See list on page 3.)
In the season-opener against Texas A&M-Kingsville, Trenbeath logged a career-high 171
yards on seven catches.
Trenbeath moves to Saturday’s game having caught at least one pass in 27 consecutive
games to start his career.
freund - open up the passing lanes: Senior QB Danny Freund (Kenosha,
Wis.) once again extended his touchdown pass streak with three touchdown completions
in Thursday’s game against Idaho State. He connected with Brady Trenbeath (Cavalier,
N.D.), Brandon Brady (Bloomington, Minn.), and Marcus Tibesar (St. Paul, Minn.).
Perhaps even more impressive is Freund’s current streak without throwing an interception
- he has now tossed 234 passes without being picked off.
Freund finished the 2007 regular season, his first year as a starter, by throwing 128
passes without being intercepted, a stretch that spanned 15-plus quarters of football. He
completed 87-of-128 passes (68.0 percent) for 1,055 yards and nine touchdowns during
WE ARE 1. WE ARE NORTH DAKOTA.

PAGE 4 • UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA FIGHTING SIOUX FOOTBALL GAME NOTES • SEPTEMBER 16, 2008 • WEEK 4
that stretch.
The last time Freund threw an interception was during the first quarter against Nebraska-
Omaha on Oct. 13, 2007.
freund - airing out the game: Though only in his second year as a starter
for the Sioux, senior QB Danny Freund has already made his way into the records books
and has continued to move up.
With the addition of 20 completions during Thursday’s game against Idaho State, Freund
moved into the No. 9 spot on UND all-time passed completed list. He jumped ahead of
Chris Belmore (2003-06) and needs another 63 to make another moved on the leaderboard.
(See list on page 3.)
Freund’s 901 yards in the air thus far have also moved him into the No. 9 spot in career
passing yards. He is also listed seventh is all-time career touchdown passes with 34. (See
list on page 3.)
hellevang - splitting the uprights: With the addition of eight point on
Thursday, junior K Brandon Hellevang (Fargo, N.D.) put his total for the season at 34. He
currently leads the team in points scored.
In the September 16 game against St. Cloud State, Hellevang tallied seven points and
became the 10th player in Sioux Football history to score 200 points.
His three-year total of 222 ties him with Mike Deutsch (1970-72) at the No. 8 spot on UND’s
all-time career scoring leaders. (See list on page 4.)
He is also moving himself up in career PATs and field goals. (See list on page 4.)
brady - pound it out on the ground: With 15 rushing touchdowns over the
past three seasons, senior RB Brandon Brady (Bloomington, Minn.) is just four TDs short
of placing his name in UND football record books. (See list on page 4.)
manke - dominate the line of scrimmage: With 14 unassisted tackles and
10 assists on the season already, senior safety Rory Manke (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) has
logged a four-year total of 119. Manke sits just 28 solo tackles behind his oldest brother,
Ryan Manke (2001-04) on UND’s all-time career solo tackles list. (See list on page 4.)
If Manke can tally another 11 pass breakups this season, he will tie three others who have
recorded 21 in their career since 1977.
Putting up big numbers: In Thursday’s game against Idaho State, a number of
PAGE 6 • UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA FIGHTING SIOUX FOOTBALL GAME NOTES • SEPTEMBER 16, 2008 • WEEK 4
A few good men: After spending nine seasons as an assistant coach at UND, including the last seven as offensive coordinator, Chris
Mussman (Iowa State ‘90) takes over as Sioux head coach in 2008.
Mussman, 40, was named the 25th head coach in UND football history on Jan. 4, 2008. During his nine seasons on staff, UND has gone
90-24 (.789) with five NCAA DII postseason appearances, including a national championship in 2001.
Newcomers to this year’s coaching staff include offensive line coach Rod Carey (Indiana ‘94), special teams coordinator and outside
linebackers coach Josh Kotelnicki (UND ‘02), running backs coach Philip Mannie (Texas State ‘03) and inside linebackers coach Digger
Anderson (UND ‘07).
Greg Breitbach (Montana-Western ‘92), who spent the past two years as UND’s running backs coach, inherits offensive coordinator duties
from Mussman, while co-defensive coordinator Mike Mannausau (UND ‘99) has been elevated to assistant head coach.
Co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach John Kelling (Minnesota State ‘91), receivers coach Tim Belmore (Gustavus Adolphus ‘96)
and tight ends coach Paul Charbonneau (Mount Allison ‘05) also return from last year’s staff.
You only have one chance to make a good first impression: On Thursday, Aug. 29, first-year head coach Chris
Mussman became the 18th person to win his debut as UND head football coach.
The most lopsided victory by a debuting Sioux head coach was a 63-4 win over Manitoba on Sept. 22, 1928, Charles A. “Jack” West’s first
game on the Sioux bench.
The worst opening loss by a first-year Sioux head coach was a 39-0 setback at Minnesota on Oct. 4, 1919, the first
Defend your home turf: North Dakota set a new home attendance precedent on Aug. 28, 2008 when it opened the 2008 season
in front of a record-breaking crowd of 11,434. This marked the largest season-opening crowd in Alerus history.
With the season-opening victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville, UND moved to 47-6 (.887) all-time at the Alerus Center, including a perfect 10-0
playoff record.
The Sioux have now won 36 of their last 38 games at the Alerus Center, with the only two losses coming at the hands of Nebraska-Omaha
(10/13/07 and 10/29/05). The loss to UNO in 2005 ended a school-record 23-game home winning streak for the Sioux.
UND ranked fifth in NCAA Division II football in average attendance in 2007, averaging 9,887 fans per game, UND’s highest average since
10,023 fans per game watched the Sioux in 2001, the team’s first season in the Alerus Center.
They have a strong supporting cast: Senior QB Danny Freund (Kenosha, Wis.) and senior S Rory Manke (Detroit Lakes,
Minn.) have been named team captains for the 2008 season. UND will also designate rotating game captains on a week-by-week basis.
There’s no “I” in team: No fewer than five Fighting Sioux have made the transition to different positions since last season:
Junior Ryan Konrath (White Bear Lake, Minn.) has switched from quarterback to wide receiver. Konrath began his transition early last
season and caught one pass.
Sophomore Curtis Dublanko (Thorsby, Alberta) is now listed as UND’s No. 2 fullback after spending his freshman campaign at inside
linebacker.
Sophomore Michael Gowan (Cando, N.d.) is listed as UND’s No. 2 tight end after appearing in three games last season as a reserve
defensive lineman.
Sophomore Ryan Kasowski (Grand Forks) was switched from inside to outside linebacker during fall camp. Kasowski appeared in 12
games as a freshman and made 35 total tackles (18 solo) to go with a team-high six quarterback hurries.
Sophomore Matt Bakke (Grand Forks) has moved across the line of scrimmage to the offensive line. Bakke appeared in three games in
2007 as a reserve defensive lineman.
Last season: UND went 10-2 overall and 7-1 in the North Central Conference last season, advancing to the second round of the NCAA
Division II playoffs. The 2007 campaign was UND’s last as a Division II and NCC member.
CHRIS MUSSMAN
Longtime assistant coach Chris
Mussman enters his first season
as the head coach of the Fighting
Sioux and will guide the traditionrich
program into its new era of Division
I-FCS football.
Mussman, 39, became the 25th
head coach in UND football history
when he was introduced at a press
conference on Jan. 4, 2008 after
nine seasons on the Sioux coaching
staff, including the last four as
assistant head coach and the last
seven as offensive coordinator.
“I am humbled to have this opportunity to lead the Fighting Sioux
football team,” said Mussman at the press conference. “The past
nine seasons have taught me the proud history and tradition of this
football program. We look forward to working with the football family
from past and present as we move towards Division I.”
Mussman possesses nearly two decades of collegiate coaching experience.
During his nine seasons as an assistant on the UND staff,
the Sioux went 90-24 (.789), won a Division II national championship
in 2001, won five North Central Conference titles and made
five NCAA Division II postseason appearances.
Last season, his seventh as UND’s offensive coordinator, Mussman
directed arguably the most explosive offensive unit in the history
of Fighting Sioux football. UND set school records for total yards
(5,924), total touchdowns (60) and regular season scoring average
(40.7 points per game).
UND finished the 2007 season as the NCC’s top-ranked offense
in scoring, total offense, total first downs, 3rd-down conversions
and time of possession. Individually, senior wide receiver Weston
Dressler set a UND singleseason record for receiving yardage and
was named a Harlon Hill Trophy finalist, while two of Mussman’s offensive
linemen, juniors Mitch Braegelmann and Brian Troen, garnered
several postseason awards between the two of them.
Additionally, junior quarterback Danny Freund set UND regular
season records for passing yards (2,573) and touchdowns
(24), while sophomore running back Ryan
Chappell shattered the team’s single-game rushing
record with 306 yards against Central Washington on
Sept. 15.
