2006 OUTLOOK 

Last season UND Head Coach 

Brock Thompson led the Fighting 

Sioux to their second-ever berth in 

the NCAA Division II tournament. 

He coached the Sioux to a 12-5-1 

record and third-place North Central 

Conference finish. 

That’s not bad for a first-year 

coach. 

Now entering his second season, 

Thompson will be counting on a mix 

of veterans and newcomers to try 

and get UND back to the postseason. 

The Sioux lost six seniors from 

last year’s squad, and it doesn’t figure 

to be easy to replace those six 

players: Jenna Barr, Marie Colago, 

Sioux Soccer at a Glance 

Lisa Glasoe, Chrissy Lapp, Meghan 

Mutrie, and Kelsie Niezwaag. 

However, five returning starters 

among the field players along with 

the team’s starting goalkeeper from 

a year ago provide Thompson with a 

talented nucleus from which to build. 

Add in 15 talented newcomers 

and Thompson has reason for optimism 

in 2006. 

There will also be two new faces 

on the Fighting Sioux coaching staff 

this season. Joining Thompson and 

returning graduate assistant coach 

Michelle Berei on the UND coaching 

staff this season is first-year assistant

Following is a position-by-position 

look at the 2006 Fighting Sioux: 

Forwards 

Junior Cassie Lund moves to forward 

this season after playing midfield 

a year ago. Lund, who scored 

three goals last season, is expected 

to be a major offensive threat as a 

result of her attack speed. 

Junior Jess Bjerke, a hard working 

athlete who scored two goals last 

season, is a versatile forward who 

also should provide offensive punch. 

Sophomore Sarah Thaden, a fast 

and smart forward, scored three 

goals as a rookie. Thaden brings athleticism 

to the front line. 

Sophomore Lindsay Kirchoffner, 

coming off a knee injury, will be 

back in action this season after scoring 

two goals in 14 games as a redshirt 

freshman last season. 

Senior Nichole Tiggs, a transfer 

from Indiana State, tied for the 

Sycamores’ team lead in scoring last 

season, with 16 points (seven goals, 

two assists). Tiggs will look to 

replace some of the offense lost with

the graduation of Barr, who led UND 

with 12 goals last season. 

Providing depth at forward will 

be freshmen Lauren Herrmann, 

Alyssa Strohbusch, Janine Oxley, 

Rose Horner and Megan Tracy. 

Midfielders 

Senior Shannon Murphy is UND’s 

team captain and a player who 

shows her leadership on and off the 

field. Murphy was a first team All- 

NCC selection last season, when she 

had six goals and three assists. 

Sophomore Lara Traczyk is looking 

to expand her playing time this 

season by moving into one of the 

spots vacated by Colago and 

Niezwag. 

Freshman Holly Remmenga, 

Kassi Brown, Mandi Boehmer, and 

Katie Kobayashi will all look for 

playing time in the midfield area. 

Defenders 

Juniors Laura Lentz and Stacy 

Pappas, both played outside back 

for the Sioux last season and both 

return in 2006. 

Lentz, Grand Forks native, is a consistent 

player for the Sioux defense 

and can be counted on to stay composed 

in pressure situations. 

Pappas is an aggressive player 

and good ball handler who is not 

afraid to move the ball into attack 

zone. 

Sophomore Mallory McCartney 

made an impact for the Sioux as a 

freshman, starting 17 out of 18 

games as a freshman on UND’s 

defensive line. 

One newcomer to the Sioux 

defense is no stranger to UND sports 

fans. Joining the UND soccer program 

for the first time is center back 

Kristi Boese, who this past spring 

completed four years of eligibility 

playing for the UND women’s basketball 

team. 

Senior goalkeeper Ashley Rohwer enjoyed a breakout 

season for the Sioux in 2005, making 92 saves. 

Boese, a Rochester, Minn., native, 

earned multiple basketball All- 

America honors her senior year and 

was also named the 2005-06 North 

Central Conference Most Valuable 

Player. She finished her career 

ranked third on UND’s all-time scoring 

list with 1,834 points and tied 

for second in rebounds (955). 

Adding defensive depth will be 

freshmen Amy Johnson, Kevyn 

Lindeman, Maureen Laschen, 

Ericka Lund and Brittany Harty. 

Goalkeepers 

Senior Ashley Rohwer returns as 

one of the top goalies in the North 

Central Conference. Rohwer, a constant 

in the net for the Sioux over 

her first three seasons, enters 2006 

with seven career shutouts. 

Challenging Rohwer are sophomores 

Erin Pederson and Lauren 

Sera. 

Pederson, a hard worker who is 

always looking for ways to improve, 

will challenge for more minutes of 

playing time this season. 

Sera, coming off an early-season 

injury a year ago, is looking for a 

fresh start this season.

Brock Thompson enters his second season behind the 

bench of the University of North Dakota women’s soccer 

team in 2006. 

When he accepted the job on June 21, 2005, Thompson 

knew that taking over a Sioux team which had gone 28- 

8-4 over the previous two seasons would be no small 

task. However, the Blair, Neb., native was up to the challenge. 

Thompson continued the excellence established in the 

Fighting Sioux soccer program over its first six seasons, 

coaching UND to a 12-5-1 record and the second NCAA 

tournament berth in school history. 

Thompson’s efforts did not go unnoticed, as he was 

named the North Central Conference’s co-Coach of the 

Year at season’s end. 

For Thompson, taking over the UND program was a natural. 

“Being familiar with the area, it’s an exciting opportunity 

to be able to come back and coach,” Thompson said at 

the time of his hiring. “I’m excited to be a part of a program 

that has had a lot of success in the six years that 

they’ve been around.” 

Thompson took over at UND after spending one year as 

an assistant coach at Indiana State, a Division I school in 

the Missouri Valley Conference. 

In his short time with the Sycamores, Thompson helped 

the team achieve its highest win total in program history 

and its highest placing in the conference standings. 

In his three seasons at Mary, Thompson’s teams 

achieved a 39-23-4 overall record, which included several 

games against Division II competition in the area. 

The coach was recognized for his efforts by being 

named the 2002 and 2003 recipient of the Region III 

Coach of the Year award. He was also named the 

Midwest Senior College Coach of the Year by the 

National Soccer Coaches Association of America 

(NSCAA) in 2002. 

Thompson’s coaching duties in Bismarck were not limited 

to the collegiate level. He also served as the girls’ 

head coach at Bismarck Century High School from 

2000-2004, leading the Patriots to an overall mark of 

64-22-1 and North Dakota state titles in 2001, ‘02 and 

‘03. 

Thompson also serves as a regional staff coach for the 

Region II Olympic Development Program, where he 

works with the top players in the region. 

After completing four years as a player at Mary, 

Thompson served as an assistant coach with the 

Marauder’s men’s team from 1998 to 2001. 

He was a four-year starter at Mary, where he was 

named an NAIA All-American in 1998 and the team 

MVP in 1995, ‘96 and ‘98. 

Thompson graduated from the University of Mary in 

2000 with a bachelor’s degree in biology education and 

is finishing a master’s degree in sport management from 

Indiana State. 

Prior to his stint in Terre Haute, Ind., Thompson served as 

the head women’s coach at the University of Mary in 

Bismarck, N.D., where he led the Marauders to back-toback 

14-win seasons and two consecutive NAIA Region 

III Championships.

First Season, Nebraska (2000) 

Kristen Gay is in her first season as an assistant coach at UND. 

Gay comes to UND after having served as an assistant coach at 

Indiana State University for the previous two seasons. Prior to 

Indiana State, Gay was head coach and sports information 

director for two years at Dana College in Blair, Neb. 

“I'm extremely pleased to add Kristen to our staff,” said 

Thompson. “She brings a wealth of experience to our program 

that includes being a head coach, an assistant coach at the 

Division I level, and a soccer player in the Big XII. Having her 

on board makes our program better and is like adding another 

head coach to the staff.” 

Said Gay, “Joining the University of North Dakota will be a 

refreshing experience. To be a part of a program and an athletic 

department with high expectations and standards from the top 

down is exciting. I look forward to the 2006 season and 

becoming a Fighting Sioux.” 

Gay is a 2000 graduate of the University of Nebraska, where 

she played soccer from 1995-98 and led the Cornhuskers to Big 

XII regular season titles in 1996 and 1997 and an NCAA Elite 

Eight Appearance in 1996. She was the team’s leading scorer as 

a freshman in 1995, was an all-conference and all-region selection 

in 1996 and served as team co-captain as a senior in 

1998. 

She received her bachelor’s degree in secondary education and 

special education from Nebraska, and is currently working 

toward completing her master’s degree in physical 

education/coaching.

Second Season, Virginia Intermont (2005) 

Michelle Berei is in her second season as a graduate assistant 

coach at UND. 

Berei earned her bachelor’s degree in May 2005 from Virginia 

Intermont College in Bristol, Va. She majored in physical education 

and earned a minor in sports medicine and was a four-year 

starter in soccer while attending Virginia Intermont College. 

Berei, who received a USSF National C Soccer License Coaching 

Certification in 2005 and USSF National D Soccer License 

Coaching Certification in 2004, was an assistant varsity coach 

at Virginia High School in Bristol, Va., in 2005. 

Berei has also coached in a number of youth soccer programs, 

and in 2003 she was the boys junior varsity coach Abingdon 

High School in Abingdon, Va. 

Peter 

Rivard 

Volunteer Assistant Coach 

First Season, Maine (1995) 

Peter Rivard is in his first season as a volunteer assistant on 

head coach Brock Thompson’s staff. Rivard is familiar with the 

Fighting Sioux soccer program, however, having served as an 

assistant coach for UND in 2002-03. 

Rivard, who is married to UND head women’s hockey coach 

Shantel Rivard, spent the last two years as the head men’s and 

women’s soccer coach at Mayville (N.D.) State University. He 

also served as the director of Mayville State’s new Sports and 

Fitness Center. 

Rivard was an assistant coach for the University of Maine men’s 

soccer team from 2000 to 2002 and in 2003. He joined the 

Black Bears from Cheverus High School in Portland, Maine, 

where he was head varsity coach at the all-male school in 1998 

and 1999. Rivard posted a 20-5-5 record in his two years at 

Cheverus, including taking the school to its first playoff victory 

in 10 years and a second-place finish in Western Maine in 

1999. 

Rivard graduated from Maine in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree 

in history and is currently working on a master’s degree in educational 

leadership at UND. He has a “B” license and a “Y” 

license from the United States Soccer Federation. The Rivards 

have an infant son, Drake.

2005 IN REVIEW

It was an exciting year for the 2005 Fighting Sioux 

soccer team, which brought not only a new coach 

but new fans to Bronson Field. 

In his first season at the helm, head coach Brock 

Thompson brought to the program a playing style 

that focused on solid scoring opportunties. 

Something clicked. The Sioux finished with a final 

regular season record of 12-4-1 and 7-4-1 in the 

North Central Conference. 

The fans noticed. Devoted fans tailgated before 

games and set the all-time season total attendance 

mark at 1,659. 

Starting the season with a five-game winning 

streak, the Sioux showed early that they were a 

team with a chance to qualify for the postseason. 

After defeating 13th-ranked South Dakota 2-1 at 

Bronson Field on Sept. 25, the Sioux were recognized 

nationally with a No. 24 ranking in the 

National Soccer Coaches Association of 

America/Adidas Poll. 

The team built upon its solid start and was selected 

for the NCAA postseason tournment. The main 

reason for the success was the vast amount of talent 

found on this year’s roster. 

First, the Sioux defense was dominant. In net, the 

Sioux had one of the best – if not the best – goalkeepers 

in the NCC and also the nation. Nationally, 

the Sioux defense was ranked 12th in shots on 

goal save percentage (0.873) and junior netminder 

Ashley Rohwer was ranked 18th in goals against 

average and 10th in shots on goal save percentage. 

In 2005, Rohwer only allowed 11 goals while 

making 84 saves in 1,254 total minutes of action. 

Her statistics placed her in the top five in the NCC 

in every defensive category. 

And if that wasn’t enough, Rohwer also notched 

five shutouts, placing her tied for second all-time 

for shutouts (7) and third for shutouts in a season 

at UND. Her most significant shutout was against 

sixth-ranked Nebraska-Omaha. Rohwer made 10 

saves in the game before freshman Sarah Thaden 

scored the game-winning goal. 

“Ashley manages the game very well from the 

goal,” Thompson said. “She is much more than a 

shot stopper. She’s a leader and an organizer and 

certainly a valuable piece to our back line.” 

Up front, the Sioux offense was able to put some 

points on the scoreboard. Three Sioux players were 

listed in many top 10 offensive categories in the 

NCC, including Shannon Murphy, Meghan 

Mutrie, and Jenna Barr. 

Leading the offense was Barr, who sat out most of 

the 2004 season with a knee injury. Since then, 

she has fought back to regain her ability to make 

plays on the field, and it showed in 2005. 

Jenna Barr scored 12 goals and 6 assists in 2005, leading UND with 30 points. 

Barr also exhibited unselfish and solid all-around 

play that resulted in her being ranked in the NCC 

in numerous offensive categories, including shots, 

shots per game, points, points per game, assists, 

and assists per game. It is no wonder why Barr’s 

efforts were a catalyst for her being named the 

NCC offensive player of the week twice in 2005. 

“Jenna was our most consistent finisher this sea-

son,” Thompson said. “She is always a threat around the 

goal and was big for us this season.” 

Thompson placed the team’s success at the feet of the players. 

“I believe that this team’s success can be directly attributed 

to the fact that we have a group of players that accept 

nothing less than success,” Thompson said. “They expect to 

win and that is a wonderful attitude for a group of people to 

have.”

he North Central 

Conference has 

prided itself on 

the success of it's student-athletes 

on and 

off of the field-of-play. 

In the 57 years since 

the North Central 

Conference joined the 

NCAA, NCC member 

schools have brought 

home 43 NCAA 

Division II national 

team championships 

and over 300 individual national titles. 

NCC student-athletes have also earned 

more than 350 CoSIDA Academic All- 

America honors and 170 NCAA Post- 

Graduate Scholarships. 

The NCC, comprised of seven institutions 

in North Dakota, Minnesota, South 

Dakota and Nebraska, has had nine 

national team champions in the past 

NORTH CENTRAL CONFERENCE HISTORY 

five years. The tradition of success is 

especially strong in women's basketball 

where NCC schools have claimed nine 

national championships, all in the last 

14 seasons. An NCC team also reached 

the championship game in 11 straight 

seasons from 1991-2001. 

The conference was formed at a 

meeting in the fall of 1921 and the first 

conference championship was the track 

& field championship held in the spring 

of 1922 in Brookings, S.D. 

The North Central Conference awards 

championships in 20 sports. The ten 

men's NCC sports are: baseball, basketball, 

cross country, football, golf, indoor 

track, outdoor track, swimming, tennis 

and wrestling. The ten women's sports 

are: basketball, cross country, golf, 

indoor track, outdoor track, soccer, softball, 

swimming, tennis and volleyball. 

Each spring the conference awards an 

all-sport champion trophy for men and 

women and began a North Central 

Conference Cup last spring, which combines 

the points from the men's and 

women's all-sports awards. 

North Dakota and Minnesota State 

tied for the men’s 2005-06 NCC Cup, 

while the Mavericks also captured the 

women’s award. 

The conference honors one male and 

one female student each year with the 

Stan Marshall Award, which strives to 

honor the top senior student-athlete in 

the conference. 

Roger Thomas, formerly the Director 

of Athletics at UND, was appointed NCC 

Commissioner on January 19, 2005. 

Melanie Nelson, Assistant 

Commissioner, joined the conference 

office in the spring of 1992 and Jon J. 

Martin was named the first Director of 

Media Relations in July, 1998. 

Colin Kapitan is the coordinator of 

officials for both football and basketball.

1999 — Inaugural season 

• Aug. 28 — First game in program history, UND 

defeats Jamestown College, 4-3. 

• Aug. 28 — April Bielejeski scores the first goal in 

program history, while Monica Vanderpool 

records the first assist. 

• Sept. 15 — April Bielejeski records schools’ first 

four-goal game in 6-2 triumph over 

Bemidji State. 

• Sept. 22 — UND shuts out Minnesota-Crookston, 

2-0 for team’s first home win at Bronson Field. 

2000 

• Sept. 30 — Tina Morse’s unassisted goal lifts 

Sioux to their first conference win, 3-2 over St. 

Cloud State. 

• Oct. 15 — UND’s 6-0 win over Augustana 

clinches the team’s first winning season, UND 

finishes the year at 12-6 over all and 5-4 in 

the NCC. 

• Nov. 1 — Sophomore April Bielejeski becomes 

the first Sioux player to be named All-North 

Central Conference. 

2001 

• Jan. 8 — Angela Morrison named second head 

coach in program history. 

• Sept. 1 — UND wins first match played at 

Memorial Stadium, 1-0 over MSU, Moorhead. 

• Sept. 18 — UND starts the season at 5-1 to 

garner votes in the NSCAA Central Region poll 

for the first time ever. 

• Sept. 22 — Jen Cilz scores two goals to lead UND 

to first victory over rival North Dakota State, 2-1. 

• Nov. 1 — Jen Cilz becomes the second player to 

be named All-NCC. 

2002 

• Aug. 12 — Matt Granstrand named team’s third 

head coach. 

• Oct. 13 — Stephanie Pfeiffer’s second half goal 

lifts UND to 4-2 win at NDSU. 

• Oct. 20 — UND downs South Dakota State, 4-1 

at Brookings, S.D., to clinch first trip to 

conference tournament. 

• Nov. 8 — No. 3-ranked Nebraska-Omaha downs 

Sioux, 3-0, in UND’s first postseason game. 

• Dec. 3 — Stephanie Pfeiffer becomes UND’s 

first All-Region selection. 

UND Soccer Timeline: 

2003 

• Sept. 16 — Fresh off a 4-0 start, UND ranked No. 

25 in the country in NSCAA D-II poll. 

• Sept. 21 — UND downs Minnesota Duluth, 2-1, 

to extend program’s longest win streak to six. 

• Oct. 4 — Sioux knock off No. 1-ranked Nebraska- 

Omaha, 2-0 at Bronson Field. This is the team’s 

first victory against a team ranked in the top 

ten nationally. 

• Oct. 6 — UND moves up to No. 6 in the nation 

with an 11-0 record. 

• Oct. 11 — UND’s 11-game win streak ends with a 

1-0 loss at South Dakota State. 

• Nov. 7 — Sioux earn team’s first playoff win by 

defeating Nebraska-Omaha at NCC tournament. 

• Nov. 10 — Team selected as the Central Region’s 

top seed in NCAA Tournament. 

• Dec. 12 — Jen Cilz and Stephanie Pfeiffer 

selected as third-team All-Americans. 

2004 

• Aug. 10 — Tim Bennett named head 

soccer coach. 

• Oct. 23 — Sioux score 3-2 victory over No. 11 

Nebraska-Omaha for third straight win 

over Mavericks. 

• Nov. 2 — Stephanie Pfeiffer named North Central 

Conference MVP. 

• Nov. 5 — Fighting Sioux advance to second 

straight NCC championship game by downing 

USD, 2-1. 

2005 

• June 20 — Brock Thompson named head 

soccer coach. 

• Oct. 26 — Sioux are ranked season-high third in 

NSCAA Central Region poll. 

• Oct. 28 — UND defeats the nation’s sixth-ranked 

team, Nebraska-Omaha, 1-0. 

• Nov. 7 — UND is invited to NCAA tournament for 

the second time in school history. 

• Nov. 10 — UND coach Brock Thompson is named 

NCC Co-Coach of the Year. 

• Nov. 11 — Nebraska-Omaha defeats the Sioux, 

5-0, in the NCAA Central Regional.
