UND Head Coach<br />
<strong>Tom</strong> <strong>Wynne</strong><br />
The name “<strong>Tom</strong> <strong>Wynne</strong>” and UND tennis<br />
go hand-in-hand. In his 17th year as head<br />
coach <strong>of</strong> the Fighting Sioux, <strong>Wynne</strong> guided<br />
UND to <strong>North</strong> Central Conference<br />
championships in 2008, 2004 and 2003 and<br />
NCAA Division II postseason appearances in<br />
each <strong>of</strong> the last seven seasons.<br />
In addition to his head coaching duties at UND, <strong>Wynne</strong> also serves as<br />
UND’s assistant director <strong>of</strong> academic services. He is also the head tennis<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional at the Centre Court Fitness Club and owner <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Centre Court Pro Shop.<br />
A four-year letterwinner at UND, in 1979 <strong>Wynne</strong> led the Fighting<br />
Sioux to their first NCC title in 42 years. After graduating with a journalism<br />
degree in 1978, <strong>Wynne</strong> played pr<strong>of</strong>essional tennis on the<br />
Marlboro Tour in France in 1980. He served as an assistant coach for<br />
five seasons, leading UND to conference titles in 1984 and 1985.<br />
<strong>Wynne</strong> was then named head coach <strong>of</strong> both men’s and women’s team<br />
sin 1986, a position he held until 1990 when the tennis programs were<br />
discontinued. When women’s tennis returned to UND in 1998, <strong>Wynne</strong><br />
was named head coach.<br />
In 2000 <strong>Wynne</strong> and his brother, Tim <strong>Wynne</strong>, were named winners <strong>of</strong><br />
the Word Burton Junior Development Award for their work with local<br />
junior tennis program. The award is given out annually by the United<br />
States Tennis Association (USTA) <strong>North</strong>ern Section to individuals or<br />
organizations that promote and achieve success in the development <strong>of</strong><br />
junior tennis players.<br />
A Grand Forks native, <strong>Wynne</strong> was the NCC’s No. 1 singles champion<br />
in 1976 and was runner-up in 1975 and 1977. He also qualified for the<br />
NCAA national tournament in 1977.<br />
<strong>Wynne</strong> was inducted to the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>North</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong> Athletic Hall<br />
<strong>of</strong> Fame in 1999.
2009 UND Tennis Preview<br />
The Fighting Sioux embark on their first season as<br />
a Division I program in 2009 and will do so with<br />
a roster that includes six returnees from last<br />
year’s <strong>North</strong> Central Conference championship team<br />
and NCAA Division II tournament qualifier.<br />
Leading the charge will be seniors Emily Callison and<br />
Katie Wessman and juniors Katie Callison and Molly<br />
Maurer. The Callison sisters each took NCC runner-up<br />
honors in singles competition last year with Katie<br />
Callison and Wessman teaming to win a conference<br />
doubles championship. Maurer was one <strong>of</strong> three Sioux<br />
to capture a conference singles title and the only one<br />
returning to this year’s team.<br />
Other returning players include junior Nichole Shotwell<br />
and sophomore Amy Boyer. Both will have the opportunity<br />
to contribute after seeing limited action in 2008.<br />

while Reisenauer enjoyed a standout prep career at<br />
Dickinson (N.D.) High School.<br />
The Sioux will open the season at <strong>North</strong>ern Iowa, one <strong>of</strong><br />
10 Division I opponents UND will face prior to competing<br />
in the season-ending Division I Independent<br />
National Tournament in Edinburg, Texas, April 17-19.<br />
