58 2005-06 RECAP by Publications Editor Matt Schill The 2005-06 University of North Dakota men’s basketball season will forever be one to remember. There were many highlights, records broken and accomplishments. Here are some that will be remembered: GLAS CEILING Head coach Rich Glas become the program’s all-time winningest coach on Jan. 26, when the Sioux defeated Augustana 66-59. Glas passed legendary coach Dave Gunther (1971-88). That night the Sioux were led by sophomore guard Josh Doyle, who had a teamhigh 18 points. Late in the game, Doyle hit a long three-pointer that put the crowd on its feet. It also gave the Sioux momentum for the rest of the night. Augustana cut the lead to five points, but the victory was secured after freshman Daniel Harkins and senior Adam Jacobson made their free throws. Glas stepped down at the end of the year to become an assistant coach at Northern Iowa under former UND standout Ben Jacobson. EVAN-SENT Senior forward Evan Lindahl enjoyed a season filled with milestones. On Jan. 12 in Omaha, Neb., Lindahl scored 15 points as the Sioux beat the Mavericks 69-62, which lifted him over the 1,000-career point mark. Lindahl became the 29th player in team history to score 1,000 points. Lindahl ended with 1,177 points, ranking 19th on UND’s alltime scoring list. Lindahl also became the first player since Todd Rypkema on Feb. 24, 2004 to top 30 points in a single game. On Jan. 19, Lindahl scored a personal best 32 points as the Sioux lost to Minnesota State. Lindahl would cap the season by earning the second All-NCC honor of his career. In his 18th and final season at UND, Rich Glas became the winningest head coach in the history of the program. ARE YOU JOSHIN’ ME? Sophomore guard Josh Doyle put on a spectacular display of offensive ability during the first week of February. In a non-conference game against Upper Iowa on Feb. 4, Doyle excited the crowd of 2,902 on Fan Appreciation Night, shooting 100 percent from the field. Doyle shot 10-for-10 from the field and 9- for-9 from behind the three-point line, ending with 29 points. Doyle’s nine three-pointers were the most in the North Central Conference all season and one shy of Travis Tuttle’s school record. His 10 field goals without a miss were also one short of a school record. Evan Lindahl Two nights earlier in an 81-70 loss to St. Cloud State, Doyle hit three of his four three-point attempts and finished with nine points, five rebounds and three assists. In two games Doyle shot 13-of-15 from the field (86.7 percent), including an astonishing 12-of-13 (92.3 percent) on three-point attempts. For his efforts during the weekend, Doyle was named Co-North Central Conference Player of the Week.

ROARING TWENTIES Late in February, senior forward Evan Lindahl had back-to-back 20-point games and shot 60 percent from three-point range as UND split its final two games of the regular season. His performance garnered him a Co-North Central Conference Player of the Week award. On Feb. 23 against Minnesota State, Lindahl led the Sioux with 23 points and grabbed six rebounds. Two nights later on Feb. 25 against Minnesota Duluth, Lindahl had 27 points, as the Sioux defeated the Bulldogs. In that game Lindahl shot 73.3 percent (11-of-15) from the field and hit five-of-eight from three-point range. PEAKS AND VALLEYS The Sioux hit their lowest point of the season on a late December trip to Colorado, when the Sioux lost 73-46 to Metro State. It was a uniting game, however. UND rallied the next night and beat Colorado School of Mines 76-71. Two games later the Sioux beat Nebraska- Omaha 73-65. It was the UND’s first North Central Conference game and a win against the team that was favored to win the league. Senior guard Caro Nobles led the Fighting Sioux in rebounding and assists in 2005-06. HEAD OF THE CLASS UND enjoyed tremendous amounts of success in the classroom in 2005-06. Sophomore guards Josh Doyle and Jimmy Hoy were each been named to the 2005-06 Academic All-North Central Conference Men’s Basketball Team by a vote of the league’s sports information directors. Sophomore guard Jimmy Hoy was named to the Academic All-NCC Team and the NCC Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll. Doyle had a 3.28 grade point average in biology at the time of voting, while Hoy had a 3.22 grade point average in entrepreneurship. Both Doyle and Hoy were also named to the NCC Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll. To qualify, student-athletes must have a minimum 3.20 grade point average, have completed at least two semesters at their current school and have competed against outside competition. SENIOR SENDOFF The 2005-06 Fighting Sioux said goodbye to three seniors: guard Caro Nobles and forwards Adam Jacobson and Evan Lindahl. Nobles, a native of Houston, Tex., led UND in assists (3.4/game) and rebounding (4.8/game), placing sixth and 11th in the 2005-06 RECAP NCC, respectively. He also finished third in the league assist/turnover ratio (2.16) and tied for ninth in steals (1.14/game) and blocked shots (0.54/game). Senior forward Adam Jacobson ranked third in the NCC in blocked shots (0.79 per game) in 2005-06. Lindahl, who graduated ranked 19th on UND’s all-time scoring list, led the team in scoring (12.8 ppg) as a senior and finished eighth in the NCC scoring race. The Cando, N.D., native played in 110 games in a Fighting Sioux uniform. 59
