The <strong>2013</strong> season will be J.C. Field’s h as the head assistant coach for the <strong>University</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>North</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong> baseball program. Field serves as the primary hing and<br />
catching coach for the program, as well as the team’s third base coach. He currently<br />
oversees the team’s west coast recruing and assists in recruing in the<br />
midwest region.<br />
Last season, UND had ve regulars hit over .300, including freshman Tyler Follis<br />
who recorded a new UND mark for hits in a season (74). Fellow freshman Je<br />
Campbell clubbed 12 homers en route to being named the rst Freshman All-<br />
American for UND in the Division I era.<br />
In 2011, four UND regulars hit over .300 with centerelder Andy Sadler leading<br />
the way with a .385 clip. That was good for third among Great West Conference<br />
hiers. Righielder Josh Ray earned rst team All-GWC honors aer bang .440<br />
in league play (.354 overall) and set a school-record with seven triples in a season.<br />
Field also helped sophomore Kris Kwak increase his bang average 147 points<br />
from his freshman season en route to earning All-GWC second team honors.<br />
Kwak led the team with 25 extra-base hits and led all GWC second baseman with<br />
ve home runs.<br />
During his second season, Field helped ve <strong>of</strong> his pupils hit .300 or beer -- a<br />
number that increased from three during his rst season. First baseman Jake<br />
Magner earned rst team All-Great West honors aer seng school records with<br />
21 home runs and 73 hits. Magner earned all-independent honors under Field’s<br />
watch as a sophomore.<br />
Prior to joining the UND coaching sta, Field served with current UND head coach<br />
Je Dodson at Southeast Missouri State as a volunteer assistant. He coached<br />
ouielders and was the Redhawks’ rst base coach. He was also involved with<br />
the development <strong>of</strong> catchers and hiers, as well as recruing.<br />
Before his move into the coaching ranks, Field played pr<strong>of</strong>essionally for the<br />
Evansville Oers <strong>of</strong> the Froner League. With the Oers, he started 46 games<br />
at catcher. He also spent a season as the baseball color commentator for ESPN<br />
Radio 1580 KTGR, where he covered his alma mater -- the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Missouri.<br />
During his collegiate and pr<strong>of</strong>essional playing career, Field caught many current<br />
Major League and high-dra pick pitchers. Among those who are or have pitched<br />
in the big leagues are Max Scherzer (Detroit Tigers/Arizona Diamondbacks), Doug<br />
Mathis (Texas Rangers), Jamie Vermelyea (Boston Red Sox) and Tim Wood (Florida<br />
Marlins).<br />
A nave <strong>of</strong> Tucson, Ariz., Field graduated in 2006 from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Missouri<br />
where he received a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies with an emphasis<br />
in communicaons, sports management and sociology. While at Mizzou, he<br />
played two years as a catcher with 96 starts. The Tigers made back-to-back NCAA<br />
tournament appearances (2005 and 2006) and were the Malibu Regional Champions<br />
in 2006 when Field was named to the All-Malibu Regional Team.<br />
Field also played two years at Pima Community College, where he was an all conference<br />
catcher both years and received an associates degree in liberal arts in<br />
2004.<br />
Former UND standout Brian DeVillers is in his sixth season as an assistant<br />
coach at his alma mater. DeVillers’ primary role is serving as the ineld<br />
coach, as well as assisng with hiers, acng as the club’s rst base coach,<br />
and as the primary contact in Midwest recruing.<br />
In 2011, rst baseman Jake Magner concluded his career as one <strong>of</strong> the top<br />
defenders in school history. He made only three errors over his past two<br />
seasons in 764 chances. Magner also climbed the all-me charts in career<br />
home runs (second; 39). DeVillers was also instrumental in the development<br />
<strong>of</strong> sophomore second baseman Kris Kwak, who earned All-Great<br />
West second team honors aer raising his bang average 143 points from<br />
his freshman season.<br />
The 2010 season was another banner one for the UND inelders under<br />
DeVillers’ tutelage. Shortstop Josh Nelson set the program’s single-season<br />
assist record with 168 and second baseman Jabby Bakhit put together the<br />
second-highest total with 164. First baseman Jake Magner established<br />
himself as the top all-around rst baseman in the Great West as he took<br />
home rst team all-league honors aer boasng a .996 elding percentage<br />
(two errors in 453 chances) and seng a single-season school record<br />
with 21 home runs.<br />
Nelson broke the assist record he set in 2009 and Magner backed up<br />
his all-independent honors as a sophomore with a brilliant campaign in<br />
the team’s rst in Great West play. During the 2008 season, the Fighng<br />
Sioux’s last in NCAA Division II, a pair <strong>of</strong> his inelders took home the only<br />
two All-NCC awards on the squad as rst baseman Chris Gulsvig and second<br />
baseman Jabby Bakhit were both honored.<br />
Prior to joining the Fighng Sioux coaching sta he served as the assistant<br />
coach at Grand Forks Red River High School from 2004-2007. During his<br />
four years there the team made two state tournament appearances.<br />
DeVillers, a former third baseman and graduate <strong>of</strong> UND with a bachelor’s<br />
degree in social sciences, was a two-me All-NCC selecon (‘01 and ‘03)<br />
during his playing days. He ranks in the top 10 in on UND’s all-me list in<br />
runs (10th, 127), triples (seventh, 5), home runs (ed for sixth, 31), runs<br />
baed in (seventh, 136), total bases (sixth, 297), and walks (sixth, 84).<br />
A Grand Forks nave and Red River High School graduate, he was an<br />
honorable menon USA Today All-American in 1999. That same year he<br />
helped lead the Grand Forks Royals to the State American Legion Championship,<br />
while seng single season and career records in home runs and<br />
runs baed in, and also being named <strong>North</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong> Non-School Athlete <strong>of</strong><br />
the Year by the <strong>North</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong> Associated Press.<br />
