Benny Moss enters his second
season at the helm of the Seahawk
program after making his debut as
a head coach in 2006-07.
The veteran coach assisted with
programs at four different institutions
before being named the seventh
head coach in UNCW history
on April 20, 2006.
Moss, 37, joined the Seahawks
after serving six seasons as the top aide for Bobby Lutz at
UNC Charlotte, where the 49ers compiled a 114-69 record
during his stay.
Following a playing career at Pfeiffer and UNC Charlotte,
Moss broke into the coaching profession at Pfeiffer in Misenheimer,
N.C., and made stops at Phillips University in Enid,
Okla., and Henderson State in Arkadelphia, Ark., before
landing in the Queen City.
Overall, he served 13 years as an assistant coach and
helped four programs compile a 287-121 (.703) record.
In his six years with the 49ers, UNCC won two league
titles, posted three 20-win seasons and advanced to four
NCAA Tournaments. The 49ers went 19-13 in 2005-06 and
collected a post-season berth in the National Invitation Tournament.
A 1992 graduate of UNCC, Moss lettered two years for
the 49ers in 1990 and 1991 before transferring to Pfeiffer,
where he played and later coached under Lutz. He was
named to the 1990 Sun Belt Conference All-Freshman Team
at UNCC, earned Academic All-American honors and was
voted to the 1993 Carolinas Conference All-Tournament
Team at Pfeiffer.
Moss served as an assistant coach at Pfeiffer for three
seasons as the Falcons went 50-14. Pfeiffer won a pair of
conference titles, advanced to two NAIA National Tournaments
and was national runner-up in 1995. In his fi nal year
with the Falcons in 1996, Pfeiffer moved to NCAA Division II,
went 21-8 and appeared in the Top 25 poll.
Moss then spent two years on the staff of Rand Chappell
at Phillips and joined Chappell for two seasons at Henderson
State. Phillips amassed a 55-12 record, and Henderson
State carved out a 47-18 mark with Moss on the bench.
Moss earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business
Administration from UNCC in 1992 and completed his
M.B.A. at Pfeiffer in 1994.
Moss follows in the footsteps of Bill Brooks, Mel Gibson,
Robert McPherson, Kevin Eastman, Jerry Wainwright and
Brad Brownell on the UNCW sidelines.
He and his wife, Dee Dee, have a son, Duane (9), and a
daughter, Courtney (5).

LAST MEETING BETWEEN UNCW-UNCG
In the last matchup between the two teams last
February, the Spartans jumped out to a 41-31 lead
at halftime and held on for a 73-66 verdict at Fleming
Gym. Senior guard Ricky Hickman torched the Seahawks
for 23 points and added six rebounds and four
assists. Jeff Horowitz came off the bench to score 14
points to pace the cold-shooting Seahawks, who made

This year’s edition of the Seahawks features four

Coach Benny Moss has only used three different
starting lineups this season. Senior forward Todd
Hendley, who is still recovering from a right foot sprain,

MOSS IN NON-CONFERENCE GAMES
UNCW’s Benny Moss stands 10-11 against nonconference
foes in his two seasons, but picked up
his fi rst non-conference road win with last Saturday’s
decision at ECU. His teams are 1-9 in road games

The Seahawks are playing their seventh and fi nal
game in December and stand 4-2 this month, giving
Benny Moss a 5-6 record during the last calendar
month of the year. UNCW went 1-4 in December last

THE ASSIST MAKER
T.J. Carter may be a marked man this season, but
the senior guard is still having an impact. He leads the
club with 57 assists (4.8 apg) and has doled out eight
or more assists in three games: College of Charleston

SHEETS BLANKETS OPPOSITION
Sophomore guard Josh Sheets has played a key
role off the bench in UNCW’s last two appearances. He
contributed 11 points on 4-for-4 shooting in UNCW’s
90-86 loss at Coastal Carolina on Dec. 19 and added
six points, including a critical trifecta, in the win over
the Pirates last Saturday.

adjust to the college game. The Florence, S.C., leaper
is UNCW’s fi rst big man off the bench and has averaged

fi rst time since leading the Seahawks to the 2006 CAA
Championship on Mar. 6, 2006. The Mechanicsville,
Md., product sat out last season after having three
surgeries to repair a debilitating hernia problem,
including a fi nal one on Nov. 1, 2006, by internationallyrecognized
specialist Dr. William C. Meyers, chairman
of the Department of Surgery and Senior Associate
Dean for Clinical Affairs at the Drexel University College
of Medicine in Philadelphia.

The Seahawks have at least 14 games and possibly
more scheduled for live television in 2007-08. Depending
on ESPN BracketBusters pairing on Feb. 23,

BRACKETBUSTERS BOUND
The Seahawks are competing in the ESPN Bracket-
Busters in mid-February. It marks the third time UNCW
has taken part in the event after playing Illinois-Chicago
during the 2003-04 campaign and UNC Greensboro
last season.
TOP SCORERS VS. UNCW IN 2007-08
Hofstra’s Antoine Agudio became the third player
this season to score 30 points on UNCW when the
senior guard went for 34 points in last weekend’s
game. Illinois State’s Osiris Eldridge and Indiana’s
Eric Gordon also poured in 30 points against the

REVERSING THE OT TREND
After dropping a pair of overtime games in his fi rst
season, Benny Moss already has a pair of extra session
wins in 2007-08. His team knocked off the College
of Charleston, 98-91, in the season opener on Nov.

10 and then edged Hofstra, 87-83, in overtime last
Saturday. The Seahawks are now 34-38 overall in OT
games, including 13-15 at home and 21-23 away from
Trask Coliseum.
FELDER SIDELINED
Sophomore guard Darryl Felder, who underwent
back surgery in late July, has withdrawn from school,
but hopes to be back with the club soon. The Powder
Springs, Ga., product made nine starts in 29 appearances
as a freshman, averaging 3.9 points and 1.6
rebounds for the Seahawks.
UNCW HOOPS HISTORY
UNCW is beginning its 57th season of intercollegiate
hoops and 32nd season of NCAA Division I competition
on the hardwood. The Seahawks joined the D-I level in
1976-77 and became a member of the Colonial Athletic
Association in 1984-85. UNCW owns a 799-689 (.536)
overall record in 56 seasons and a 498-405 (.550)
ledger in D-I play.
POST-SEASON SUCCESS
The Seahawks have appeared in four NCAA Tournaments
and two NIT tourneys. UNCW won the CAA
Championship in 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2006 to earn
a berth in the NCAA Tournament and was awarded
an NIT invite in 1998 and 2001. UNCW recorded the
biggest win in the school’s history on Mar. 14, 2002,
when the Seahawks upset fi fth-seeded Southern Cal,
93-89, in overtime at Arco Arena in Sacramento.

NBA COUNTRY
UNCW’s Trask Coliseum served as the preseason
training camp for an NBA team for the sixth time in
the last nine years when the Charlotte Bobcats set
up camp in early October. It marked the third straight
year for the Bobcats at Trask Coliseum. The Washington
Wizards trained at Trask for three seasons
when Michael Jordan was with the club in 2000, 2001
and 2002.

UNCW is beginning its 31st season at Trask
Coliseum since the 6,000-seat arena opened in
1977-78. The Seahawks own a 273-102 (.728)
record on their home fl oor through the years,

Brad Brownell, Head Coach, Wright State University
Brownell begins his second year as head coach at Wright State after serving four
seasons as the head coach at UNCW from 2003-06.
Billy Donlon, Assistant Coach, Wright State University
A former point guard who played in 118 games from 1996-99, Donlon worked with
Brad Brownell at UNCW before moving on to Wright State.
Marty McGillan, Assistant Coach, Winthrop University
A 1990 UNCW graduate, McGillan served on the staffs at East Carolina, Charleston,
UNCW and Wright State before joining the Winthrop staff.
Keith Adkins, Head Coach, Campbellsville University
After playing two seasons at Notre Dame, Atkins played his fi nal two years at UNCW,
averaging 11.0 points as a senior.
John Calipari, Head Coach, University of Memphis
Calipari lettered two years at UNCW in the 1970’s before transferring to Division II

Wainwright piloted the Seahawks to two NCAA berths and two NIT bids in fi ve
seasons with a 136-103 record in that span.
Mike Winiecki, Assistant Coach, Wright State University
Winiecki served on Jerry Wainwright’s staff at UNCW during a successful run that
produced three NCAA Tournament appearances.
Pat Sullivan, Assistant Coach, New Jersey Nets
A former assistant coach with the UNCW women’s basketball program, Sullivan
hooked on with Larry Brown’s staff at Detroit and won an NBA ring in 2004. He joined
the staff of the Nets two years ago.
Mark Byington, Assistant Coach, College of Charleston
A member of UNCW’s NIT team in 1998, Byington hooked up with Tom Herrion’s staff

ABOUT
THE
CAA
The Colonial Athletic Association consists of 12 institutions with
a geographical footprint that stretches from Boston to Atlanta and
encompasses fi ve of the nation’s nine largest metropolitan areas.
CAA members include Delaware, Drexel, George Mason, Georgia
State, Hofstra, James Madison, Northeastern, Old Dominion, UNC
Wilmington, Towson, Virginia Commonwealth and William & Mary.
The CAA was one of nine Division I conferences that had four
teams with 22 or more victories at the completion of the 2006-07
season. Over the past two seasons, eight CAA teams have eclipsed
the 22+ win total.
Four CAA teams fi nished in the Top 75 of the RPI last season, led
by VCU at 44, Old Dominion (45), Drexel (55) and Hofstra (75). The
CAA was tied for seventh among all conferences with at least four
teams in the Top 75 RPI. Over the past two seasons, the CAA has
had a total of 10 teams in the Top 88 of the Final RPI.
The CAA recorded the eighth strongest non-conference strength of
schedule ranking, featuring nine teams in the top 139. Drexel had the
league’s toughest NCSS at 17, followed by Old Dominion (21), VCU
(61), Northeastern (75), Towson (78), Delaware (109), Hofstra (125)
and UNC Wilmington (139).
Six of the CAA’s 12 teams have been to post-season play in the
past two years.
CAA teams welcome back 67% of their starters from a year ago,
including six players who earned All-CAA honors. Ten of the league’s
top 20 in scoring, 12 of the top 20 in rebounding and six of the top
10 in assists are back. The CAA will also add some of the nation’s
highest-rated recruits and several highly-touted transfers.
For the second year in a row, the CAA had two teams in the NCAA
fi eld of 65. CAA champion VCU shocked 6th seeded Duke 79-77 in
the fi rst round before taking Pittsburgh to overtime, while Old Dominion
earned the league’s second NCAA at-large bid in two years.
Both Drexel and Hofstra were selected to participate in the 32-team
National Invitation Tournament (NIT), marking the third consecutive
season that the CAA has had four teams in post-season play. The CAA
once again ranked among the Top 10 conferences with four-or-more
teams in post-season play.

Seahawk defense for 30 points as host Illinois State rallied
in the second half for an 89-73 victory over UNCW in the
Chicago Invitational Challenge at Redbird Arena.
The Seahawks led, 41-36, at halftime before the Redbirds
erupted for 53 points after intermission.
Eldridge drained 10-of-15 shots, including 5-of-6 behind
the arc, to lead the Redbirds, who shot 51.7 percent.
