Main ridge: Prominent ridge line separating river or creek drainage. Usually<br />

has numerous smaller ridges (spur ridges) extending outward from both sides.<br />

Can be confusing if not covered in orientation.<br />

May day: International distress signal/call; when repeated three times, it<br />

indicates imminent and grave danger and that immediate assistance is required.<br />

Maximum ferry range: Greatest distance that an airplane can travel in air<br />

speed miles under unloaded optimal working speed and working radius flight<br />

conditions.<br />

Message center: Part of the Incident Communications Center and collocated or<br />

placed adjacent to it. It receives, records and routes information about resources<br />

pertaining to the incident, resource status and administration and tactical traffic.<br />

MOA: A military operations area (special use area) found on aeronautical<br />

sectional charts.<br />

Mobilization center: An off-incident location at which emergency service<br />

personnel and equipment are temporarily located pending assignment, release, or<br />

reassignment.<br />

Modular airborne firefighting system (MAFFS): A pressurized selfcontained<br />

retardant system for use in Lockheed C-130 military aircraft.<br />

Mop-up, dry: A method in which burning materials are extinguished without<br />

water.<br />

Mop-up, wet: A method in which burning materials are extinguished with<br />

water, or in combination with water and soil.<br />

MSL: Mean sea level.<br />

MTR: A military training route found on aeronautical sectional maps and<br />

AP/18 maps; routes accommodate low-altitude training operations -- below<br />

10,000 feet MSL -- in excess of 250 KIAS.<br />

Multi-agency coordination (MAC): A generalized term which describes the<br />

functions and activities of representatives of involved agencies in a geographic<br />

area who come together to make key decisions regarding the prioritizing of<br />

incidents and to share the use of critical resources. A MAC organization is not<br />

part of the ICS and is not involved in incident strategy or tactics.<br />
