Memorial Coliseum is a tremendous home-court advantage for the Kentucky volleyball team, which plays all of its matches in the historic facility. The Wildcats have compiled a 279-128 record, good for a .686 winning percentage in 30 seasons of play in the facility. Last season, Kentucky posted its best record in the Coliseum since 1993 as the Cats went 13-2 at home in 2006. The Coliseum has played host to first and second round NCAA volleyball action as well as the 1983 NCAA Volleyball Final Four. Memorial also currently serves as the home court for the UK women’s basketball and gymnastics teams. The storied gymnasium also housed some of the greatest moments in UK men’s basketball history as its home for 26 seasons from 1950 to 1976. Despite what was happening on the court, the best part, for me, was what was going on in the stands. The fans were amazing. Students were cheering and getting rowdy over the littlest plays, parents were starting all the cheers, and most importantly the team seemed to be playing for not only themselves, but for the pride of all Kentucky athletics. The first trips for the Wildcats to the NCAA Tournament since the 1993 season marked Kentucky’s seventh and eighth NCAA appearances in school history. The Cats have enjoyed a storied history in postseason play that includes five appearances in the Sweet Sixteen. UK’s first appearance in the tournament was in 1983 under co-head coaches Marilyn Mc- Reavy and Mary Jo Peppler. In that tournament, UK advanced to the Sweet Sixteen before losing to Hawaii in the regional finals. Last season, the Wildcats headed North to West Lafayette, Ind., for a showdown with No. 20 Ohio, which Kentucky toppled in a fivegame thriller to give the Cats their first NCAA Tournament win since Dec. 3, 1992. The Wildcats fell to host Purdue the next night in a 3-0 sweep. In 2005, Kentucky squared off with 2005 Atlantic Coast Conference champion Maryland in the Louisville Gardens. The Terrapins used powerful blocking to overpower the Cats 3-1 in the tournament’s opening round. In 1993, Fran Flory’s first year with the program, the Cats hosted the first and second rounds, but suffered a 3-0 loss to Duke after a first-round bye. UK made its best two showings in the tournament in 1983 and 1987 when the team won its first match at the South Regional Championships to be included among the final eight team in the tournament before losing to Hawaii and Texas, respectively, by 3-1 scores in the regional final. McReavy and Peppler’s ’83 team and the ’87 team coached by Kathy De- Boer both used Memorial Coliseum’s home court advantage to sweep through their first round matches. Collegiate volleyball championships began in 1970 with the first event held in Long Beach, Calif. Under the auspices of the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), the tournament continued to flourish through 1981 when the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) began its sponsorship. The NCAA has remained the host ever since. The University of Kentucky and Memorial Coliseum were honored to serve as the hosts for the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Championships in 1983, won by Hawaii over UCLA, 3-0. The field for the NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championships was expanded from 56 to 64 teams in 1998. The tournament’s first expansion was in 1993, increasing the field from 32 to 48 teams. The Southeastern Conference has been the leader in advancing teams to the NCAA Tournament as seven SEC schools made the field in 2006 after six teams advanced in 2005.
