10 Freedom Hall (20,042) Louisville, Ky. • Dec. 16, 2006 Kentucky 6 1 Louisville 49 Playing with poise while some of his older teammates struggled, Kentucky freshman Jodie Meeks scored a career-high 18 points to lead the quickly improving Wildcats to a 61-49 victory over instate rival Louisville. The win was Kentucky's third straight in the series, and the Wildcats did it without major contributions from leading scorers Randolph Morris and Joe Crawford, who combined for just seven points - nearly 24 below their season average. Morris finished with just two points in 15 foul-plagued minutes while Crawford had trouble getting anything going. "We had to overcome Randolph's loss and I thought our guys showed a lot of heart and courage," Smith said. Particularly Meeks, who scored nine straight points midway through the second half after the Cardinals took a 41-40 lead. He hit consecutive 3-pointers and added three free throws while Kentucky held the Cardinals without a field goal for nearly seven minutes. Meeks looked right at home at the center of one of college basketball's fiercest rivalries, helping the Wildcats finish a brutal stretch that included losses to No. 1 UCLA and No. 3 North Carolina and a win over Indiana. While hard fought, the game showcased just how far one of the nation's high-profile rivalries has fallen in recent years. There were poor shots, missed layups, turnovers and no sense of rhythm. The teams combined for 25 turnovers, 42 fouls and 84 missed shots. Louisville came in averaging 77.5 points a game, but struggled to get anything going. The Cardinals shot just 27 percent from the field, including 13 percent (3-for-24) from 3-point range. David Padgett led Louisville with 16 points and 10 rebounds, but had little help from his teammates despite what coach Rick Pitino called "excellent" execution offensively. "This is kind of a scary thought, that's the best we've ran our offense this year," Pitino said. "It's an obvious thing. We are not a good shooting team. We missed open shots." The Cardinals had plenty of opportunities to take control. They led for much of the first half and did a decent job defensively, holding Kentucky to 42 percent shooting. The Cardinals got within 49-45 on a putback by Andre McGee with 3:59 to play - Louisville's first basket in nearly seven minutes - but Sheray Thomas hit a jumper to put the Wildcats up by six and Louisville would get no closer. KENTUCKY BASKETBALL 11 Rupp Arena (21,961) Lexington, Ky. • Dec. 19, 2006 Santa Clara 60 Kentucky 74 Randolph Morris had 23 points and a career-high 13 rebounds as Kentucky stretched its winning streak to four games with a 74- 60 victory over Santa Clara. It was the third double-double of the season for the Kentucky center, who picked up four fouls and was held to a season-low two points Saturday in the Wildcats' victory over rival Louisville. With two Santa Clara starters measuring at 6-foot-11, Kentucky needed its big man to stay out of foul trouble and contribute this time. Morris did both. He drew only one foul late in the game when Kentucky had a comfortable 11-point lead. He made 10 of 18 shots to match the season-high 23 points he scored earlier this season in a loss at North Carolina. Mitch Henke had 17 points to lead Santa Clara. With the Broncos ahead 23-22 late in the first half, Joe Crawford banked in a layup from beneath the basket, putting Kentucky ahead for good. Morris scored the next six points on the drive. Santa Clara scored the last five points of the half to pull to 30- 28 and came within one with 14 minutes left in the game on a jumper by Danny Pariseau. But Morris answered with a jumper of his own a minute later, then came up with a critical steal to keep the Broncos from regaining the lead. Freshman Derrick Jasper put the game out of reach with six minutes left when he took an under-the-basket pass from Joe Crawford, scored on the layup, drew a foul and connected on the 3-point play. Freshman point guard Derrick Jasper had a career-high eight assists - the most by a Kentucky player this year. Ford, coming off a victory against former coach Rick Pitino and Louisville, failed to become the first coach in nine years to beat both the Cardinals and Wildcats on their home courts in the same season. He is now 0-4 against his alma mater. The previous three games - including one in the NCAA tournament - came when Ford coached at Eastern Kentucky. Kentucky's backcourt trio of Crawford, Bradley and Jasper had its most complete game since coach Tubby Smith went with the three-guard lineup Dec. 5 against Chattanooga. Crawford came out of a shooting funk by hitting three of four shots from 3-point range. Bradley made both of his long-range shots. Eight minutes into the game with the Minutemen ahead 19-16, Kentucky went on a 23-3 run to take a 17-point lead. Six different Wildcats scored on the 10-minute drive, highlighted by three consecutive 3-pointers - two from Crawford and one by Ramel Bradley. The Minutemen trimmed a 21-point Kentucky lead down to 12 with two minutes left but got no closer. The Wildcats dominated virtually every aspect of the game, shooting 59 percent from the field, holding the Minutemen to 37 percent, and winning the rebounding battle 37-to-32. One of the only sore spots for Kentucky was personal fouls. The Wildcats racked up 20 - five from Bobby Perry and four from Morris. James Life provided almost all the offense for UMass, scoring 24 points - including six 3-pointers. Stephane Lasme had five blocks, but the Wildcats kept challenging him, as Lasme fouled out with two minutes left. The newest Wildcat, Ramon Harris of Alaska, scored his first two points of the year. 13 Rupp Arena (23,528) Lexington, Ky. • Dec. 30, 2006 Eastern Kentucky 65 Kentucky 78 Randolph Morris matched a career high with 25 points and Ramel Bradley had 20 as Kentucky pushed its winning streak to six with a 78-65 victory over Eastern Kentucky. Morris, who was 9 for 12 from the field, added 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. He didn't pick up his first and only foul until late in the game when the Wildcats led by 13. As it turned out, the Wildcats needed their junior center to produce inside because of the career day Eastern Kentucky's freshman guard Adam Leonard turned in from outside. Leonard had a career-high 20 points - all but two of them from beyond the arc. Last season was the first since 1989-90 that Kentucky didn't manage at least one streak of six or more wins. They moved to 10- 0 all-time against the Colonels, who they met most recently in the first round of the 2005NCAA tournament. Every time Kentucky tried to pull away early, the Colonels seemed to nail a 3-pointer to stay close. Leonard made his first seven shots - six of them from 3-point range - including one that cut the Wildcats' lead to 40-39 early in the second half. But Bradley followed with Kentucky's first 3-pointer in 10 tries, then made a diving steal and fed Morris for a layup that extended Kentucky's lead to 45-39. Bradley caught fire in the second half and ended up 4-for-7 from 3-point range. The Colonels never led after a Leonard 3 gave them an 18-17 lead less than seven minutes into the game, but they did manage to tie up the Wildcats twice after that. Kentucky made only four of its first 16 shots and had no assists in the first 10 minutes, but quickly corrected course. The Wildcats made 52 percent of their shots and dominated the boards 38-26. The Wildcats never trailed but couldn't pull away from the Cougars despite leading 10-0 early. They shot just 39 percent from the field - surpassing the season-worst 41 percent last month in a victory over Santa Clara. A 3-point play by Oliver Lafayette with less than three minutes to go tied the game at 68, but Randolph Morris hit a turn-around jumper to give the Wildcats the lead for good. Morris led the team with 20 points - 10 of them from the freethrow line. He added 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double in six games. The Cougars, who lost three in a row prior to their visit to Rupp Arena, kept making clutch 3-pointers to keep it close. Lafayette led all Cougars scorers with 19 points. Kentucky limited Ole Miss to 2-of-13 from the field over the last 12 minutes as it beat Mississippi 68-58 in the SEC opener for both schools. "That was our best defensive effort of the year," Kentucky coach Tubby Smith said. "That's what won it for us. We really defended the perimeter." Joe Crawford led the Wildcats with 23 points - including 15 in the second half. Kentucky, coming off a season-low shooting performance in a win over Houston on Wednesday, finished 25-of-45 from the field. Randolph Morris had 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Ramel Bradley added 13 points and five assists. Bradley was particularly effective in the stretch run by the Wildcats, scoring eight consecutive points during a 17-5 run to finish the game. "Joe Crawford had a great game and Bradley was great at the end," said Morris, who carried the Wildcats offensively until the final 12 minutes. "We've got others that can score when I don't and then it's up to me to play defense." Todd Abernethy, who led Ole Miss with 17 points, accounted for both baskets over the difficult final 12 minutes. "That late surge, they just took the wind out of our sails and crushed us," Abernethy said. Dwayne Curtis had 13 points and 10 rebounds, battling Morris to a draw on both counts. Clarence Sanders had 12 points and Bam Doyne had 10 points for the Rebels, who managed only 22- of-57 from the field. "You can't beat Kentucky shooting 33 percent in the second half," Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy said. "Kentucky stepped up and made the big plays." Both clubs were tied or swapped leads 19 times in the opening 28 minutes, with neither leading by more than six points. The Rebels, who led 37-35 at halftime, appeared to gain control with an 8-0 run that gave them a 53-51 lead with 12:02 left. Instead, it was Kentucky's defense that found a higher gear. Bradley and Crawford, who finished 4-of-5 from 3-point range, established the offensive edge on the perimeter, taking the pressure off Morris in the decisive late surge. Jodie Meeks hit a 3-point shot, his only basket of the night, off an assist from Bradley to give Kentucky a 56-53 lead with 8:56 left. Kentucky never trailed again. The Wildcats shot 10-of-18 from the field in the second half while shutting down the Ole Miss offense. Lexington, Ky. • Dec. 30, 2006
Eastern Kentucky 65
Kentucky 78
Randolph Morris matched a career high with 25 points and
Ramel Bradley had 20 as Kentucky pushed its winning streak to six
with a 78-65 victory over Eastern Kentucky.
Morris, who was 9 for 12 from the field, added 10 rebounds for
his fourth double-double of the season. He didn't pick up his first
and only foul until late in the game when the Wildcats led by 13.
As it turned out, the Wildcats needed their junior center to produce
inside because of the career day Eastern Kentucky's freshman
guard Adam Leonard turned in from outside. Leonard had a
career-high 20 points - all but two of them from beyond the arc.
Last season was the first since 1989-90 that Kentucky didn't
manage at least one streak of six or more wins. They moved to 10-
0 all-time against the Colonels, who they met most recently in the
first round of the 2005NCAA tournament.
Every time Kentucky tried to pull away early, the Colonels
seemed to nail a 3-pointer to stay close. Leonard made his first
seven shots - six of them from 3-point range - including one that cut
the Wildcats' lead to 40-39 early in the second half.
But Bradley followed with Kentucky's first 3-pointer in 10 tries,
then made a diving steal and fed Morris for a layup that extended
Kentucky's lead to 45-39. Bradley caught fire in the second half
and ended up 4-for-7 from 3-point range.
The Colonels never led after a Leonard 3 gave them an 18-17
lead less than seven minutes into the game, but they did manage
to tie up the Wildcats twice after that.
Kentucky made only four of its first 16 shots and had no assists
in the first 10 minutes, but quickly corrected course. The Wildcats
made 52 percent of their shots and dominated the boards 38-26.
Kentucky 77
Kentucky had its worst shooting game of the season but held
off Houston 77-70 to survive a scare in its final tuneup before
Southeastern Conference play.
The Wildcats never trailed but couldn't pull away from the
Cougars despite leading 10-0 early. They shot just 39 percent from
the field - surpassing the season-worst 41 percent last month in a
victory over Santa Clara.
A 3-point play by Oliver Lafayette with less than three minutes
to go tied the game at 68, but Randolph Morris hit a turn-around
jumper to give the Wildcats the lead for good.
Morris led the team with 20 points - 10 of them from the freethrow
line. He added 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double in
six games.
The Cougars, who lost three in a row prior to their visit to Rupp
Arena, kept making clutch 3-pointers to keep it close. Lafayette led
all Cougars scorers with 19 points.
Kentucky, which won its seventh in a row, begins conference
play Saturday at Mississippi.
Oxford, Miss. • Jan. 6, 2007
Kentucky 68
Ole Miss 58
With a seven-game winning streak in jeopardy, Kentucky delivered
defensively when the Wildcats needed it most.
Kentucky limited Ole Miss to 2-of-13 from the field over the last
12 minutes as it beat Mississippi 68-58 in the SEC opener for both
schools.
"That was our best defensive effort of the year," Kentucky
coach Tubby Smith said. "That's what won it for us. We really
defended the perimeter."
Joe Crawford led the Wildcats with 23 points - including 15 in
the second half. Kentucky, coming off a season-low shooting performance
in a win over Houston on Wednesday, finished 25-of-45
from the field.
Randolph Morris had 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Ramel
Bradley added 13 points and five assists. Bradley was particularly
effective in the stretch run by the Wildcats, scoring eight consecutive
points during a 17-5 run to finish the game.
"Joe Crawford had a great game and Bradley was great at the
end," said Morris, who carried the Wildcats offensively until the
final 12 minutes. "We've got others that can score when I don't and
then it's up to me to play defense."
Todd Abernethy, who led Ole Miss with 17 points, accounted for
both baskets over the difficult final 12 minutes.
"That late surge, they just took the wind out of our sails and
crushed us," Abernethy said.
Dwayne Curtis had 13 points and 10 rebounds, battling Morris
to a draw on both counts. Clarence Sanders had 12 points and
Bam Doyne had 10 points for the Rebels, who managed only 22-
of-57 from the field.
"You can't beat Kentucky shooting 33 percent in the second
half," Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy said. "Kentucky stepped up
and made the big plays."
Both clubs were tied or swapped leads 19 times in the opening
28 minutes, with neither leading by more than six points.
The Rebels, who led 37-35 at halftime, appeared to gain control
with an 8-0 run that gave them a 53-51 lead with 12:02 left.
Instead, it was Kentucky's defense that found a higher gear.
Bradley and Crawford, who finished 4-of-5 from 3-point range,
established the offensive edge on the perimeter, taking the pressure
off Morris in the decisive late surge.
Jodie Meeks hit a 3-point shot, his only basket of the night, off
an assist from Bradley to give Kentucky a 56-53 lead with 8:56 left.
Kentucky never trailed again.
The Wildcats shot 10-of-18 from the field in the second half
while shutting down the Ole Miss offense.
