4 Lahaina Civic Center (2,400) Honolulu, Hi. • Nov. 21, 2006 Kentucky No. 20/22 68 UCLA No. 5/5 73 Luc Richard Mbah A Moute scored 18 points despite playing the final 8 1/2 minutes with four fouls, leading No. 5 UCLA to a 73- 68 victory over No. 20 Kentucky in the semifinals of the EA Sports Maui Invitational. Mbah A Moute scored six of UCLA's last 10 points, ignoring the foul trouble to go inside for the first four points and then throwing down a dunk on the break to make it 69-65 with 25 seconds to play. Kentucky got to 71-68 on a layup by Randolph Morris with 2 seconds to go, but Arron Afflalo, who struggled from the field all game, made two free throws with .6 seconds to go for the final margin. Afflalo finished with 14 points on 5-for-18 shooting, including 1- for-8 from 3-point range, while Lorenzo Mata added 12 points and 11 rebounds. Joe Crawford had 16 points for the Wildcats, while freshman guard Derrick Jasper had 12 points and nine rebounds. UCLA jumped out to a 26-9 lead, but the Wildcats were able to get it down to 38-30 at halftime. The final 10 minutes were the kind of game one would expect from the two most successful programs in college basketball history - UCLA holds a record 11 NCAA championships, four ahead of runner-up Kentucky. The Wildcats were finally able to tie the game for the first time at 48 on a 3 by Crawford with 11:46 to play, and their first lead of the game came 1:24 later on two free throws by Jasper. There were three lead changes and four ties the rest of the way and neither team managed more than a five-point lead until Afflalo's dunk with 8 seconds left made it 71-65. Mbah A Moute scored down low to make it 67-62 with 2:20 left and Crawford answered with a three-point play 18 seconds later. After a Kentucky turnover and a UCLA miss, Wildcats coach Tubby Smith called two timeouts in a 13-second span, but Bruins point guard Darren Collison foiled any strategy by stealing the ball from Ramel Bradley and then found Mbah A Moute on the break for the game-clinching dunk. Afflalo, one of two returning starters from last season's national runner-up, entered the game shooting 56 percent from the field and 55 percent on 3s. In his first two seasons at UCLA he shot 46 percent overall and 37 percent from beyond the arc. KENTUCKY BASKETBALL 5 Lahaina Civic Center (2,400) Honolulu, Hi. • Nov. 22, 2006 Memphis No. 11/12 80 Kentucky No. 20/22 63 Freshman Willie Kemp scored 10 of his 12 points in the opening four minutes of the second half and No. 12 Memphis topped No. 20 Kentucky in an 80-63 victory in the third-place game of the EA Sports Maui Invitational. The Tigers were too fast for the Wildcats because of Kemp and fellow guard Andre Allen pushing the ball on the break. And they were too much inside with 6-foot-9, 260-pound Joey Dorsey keying the game-breaking 14-0 run in the second half with two monster dunks. Memphis bounced back from a disheartening 92-85 semifinal loss to No. 19 Georgia Tech, a game which the Tigers held a 16- point halftime lead only to be outrebounded 29-9 in the second half. There was no problem on the boards against Kentucky. Memphis had a 38-27 rebound advantage, including 11-5 on the offensive end. Center Randolph Morris was most of Kentucky's offense throughout the first 30 minutes of the game. He finished with 18 points and Joe Crawford had 15. Robert Dozier, who was scoreless and fouled out in the loss to Georgia Tech, had 15 points for Memphis, while Chris Douglas- Roberts and Jeremy Hunt each had 13. Dorsey finished with six points and seven rebounds. Memphis led 43-40 after a first half that saw four lead changes and two ties over the final seven minutes. That all changed at the start of the second half when the 6-2 Kemp, who started all four games and came in averaging 8.7 points, took over. He was scoreless in eight minutes in the first half after picking up two fouls. He hit two 3s then scored twice on drives as the Tigers took a 55-46 lead four minutes into the second half. The pace of the game changed to what the Tigers like and Kentucky suddenly wasn't getting any offense from Morris down low. Dorsey dunked to start the deciding 14-0 run. He then blocked a shot by Sheray Thomas and took off on the break. The run was worth it when he took a short pass on the wing and threw down a power dunk. Kentucky coach Tubby Smith called a timeout but the tide was definitely the Tigers' way. Antonio Anderson's 3-pointer with 8:21 to go capped the run and Memphis was up 73-50. The third-place finish matched Memphis' best (1992) in four appearances on Maui. Kentucky, which lost 73-68 to No. 5 UCLA in the semifinals, won the tournament in 1993, and finished third in 1997 and 2002. Randolph Morris led the Wildcats with 17 points and eight rebounds, but it was Stevenson who nailed the early shots with the game on the line. He missed all three free-throw attempts but connected on all seven field-goal tries -- more than doubling his previous high of three. The Wildcats, who dropped out of the Top 25 this week after losses in Maui against now-No. 1 UCLA and Memphis, missed their first nine shots and didn't hit a field goal until more than six minutes had passed. Stevenson's dunk pulled the Wildcats to within three points midway through the first half and began a 17-0 run that buried the Cougars. Seconds later, Stevenson showed off a new signature move -- an under-the-basket hook flip that gave the Wildcats their first lead at 12-11. He did it again the next time down, drawing the foul -- albeit missing the free throw -- in the process. Charleston's star guard Dontaye Draper had only two points in the first half but found his shot in the second, leading the Cougars with 15 points. 7 Smith Center (21,147) Chapel Hill, N.C. • Dec. 2, 2006 Kentucky 63 North Carolina No. 7/6 75 Wayne Ellington scored 17 points, Brandan Wright added 16 and No. 7 North Carolina went on to beat Kentucky 75-63 in a game between college basketball's winningest schools. Reyshawn Terry also scored 16 points and capped the Tar Heels' decisive run with a pair of 3-pointers. The Tar Heels overcame Randolph Morris' 23 points on 11-of- 12 shooting to earn their third straight victory in this series. North Carolina is 41 behind the Wildcats' NCAA record of 1,930 victories. Wright has scored at least 10 points in each of his seven games as a Tar Heel. For Terry, this was his second consecutive strong performance against Kentucky. He had a career-high 25 in the Tar Heels' win last December. The pivotal 11-2 stretch in this one started with a Roy Williams' lecture. He pulled his five starters with 17:16 remaining, upset that they allowed Kentucky to make its first three shots in the second half, pull within 36-33 and get to one loose ball in particular. Moments after Wright started the run with a hook shot, he and the other starters were benched for about 2½ minutes while they caught grief from their coach. When they returned, Terry got hot. He made two 3-pointers 26 seconds apart to push the Tar Heels' lead into double figures for the first time, 47-35, with just over 13 minutes left. Kentucky never got closer than nine the rest of the way. Joe Crawford had 16 points and Bobby Perry added 12 for the Wildcats, who outrebounded North Carolina 42-36 but lost their third game against a ranked team this season. For the most part, Morris was Kentucky's offense in the first half. He was 5-of-5 shooting with 11 points during the opening 20 minutes. The rest of the Wildcats were a combined 6-for-23 and went 0-for-9 from 3-point range - out of character for a team that entered shooting 36 percent from beyond the arc. "Obviously, they let me catch the ball in the post," Morris said. "Anytime I feel like I catch the ball with somebody behind me, I have the potential to score. I was just making shots today." Tyler Hansbrough, the star of the Ohio State win with 21 points, struggled against the Wildcats for the second straight season. The sophomore preseason All-American has failed to reach double figures three times in his career -- and two of those came against Kentucky. A year after scoring just six points against the Wildcats, Hansbrough finished this one with a season-low seven. "We just tried to help pack it in on the inside and eliminate his touches, and trap when he gets the ball," Morris said. KENTUCKY BASKETBALL 8 Freedom Hall (11,641) Louisville, Ky. • Dec. 5, 2006 Chattanooga 63 Kentucky 79 Ramel Bradley had a career-high 23 points, scoring six of Kentucky's season-high 13 3-pointers, as the Wildcats defeated Chattanooga 79-63 in their annual game at Freedom Hall. It was an outside shooting fest for both sides as the two teams combined for 72 points off 3s. Chattanooga's Keddric Mays led the way with 25 points and seven 3-pointers, one shy of a career-high. With nobody in the Mocs' starting lineup taller than 6-foot-7, Kentucky coach Tubby Smith decided to go small too - giving freshman guard Derrick Jasper his first start. Jasper and Bradley split the point guard duties, and while Jasper came up with 10 rebounds, Bradley quickly rediscovered his outside shot. He nailed six of nine 3-point tries, breaking his career-high of five 3s, which he set last month against Mississippi Valley State. Joe Crawford also made four 3-pointers among his seasonhigh 19 points, and Bobby Perry had 17 points and was 3-for-3 from long range. Randolph Morris also added 17. Jasper had one point and six assists to go along with his rebounds, but he also made some freshman mistakes. He drew a technical foul when he nudged a Mocs player and bumped into Morris when the Kentucky center was coming down with a rebound, turning the ball over to the Mocs. The Wildcats, who never trailed, took a 7-point lead before the Mocs pulled to 19-18 midway through the first half on a dunk by Casey Long. "He had a triple-double," Wildcats coach Tubby Smith joked about his forward, who had to leave late in the game with a gash above his eyebrow. Although the Wildcats and Hoosiers came into the game unranked, don't tell the players this game - the 50th overall between the programs - has lost its luster. Kentucky survived the physical - and, in Perry's case, bloody - defensive struggle with a 59-54 victory. "I think the weight has definitely been taken off our shoulders," Kentucky center Randolph Morris, who had 16 points and 10 rebounds, said. "It feels good to win a close game against a very solid team and one of our rivals. It was definitely a statement for us to pull out a close one under pressure." With the Wildcats ahead 47-41, Roderick Wilmont nailed consecutive 3-pointers to tie the game. Before that, the teams were a combined 3-for-29 from beyond the arc. Morris quickly answered with his signature turnaround jumper at the 6-minute mark and converted the three-point play after drawing a foul from D.J. White. "Randolph is developing that mentality - `Get it to me, and I'll put it in,"' Smith said. White, who finished with 23 points, hit a layup two minutes later that pulled the Hoosiers within two, but jumpers by Joe Crawford and Perry put Kentucky up 57-52. With less than two minutes to go, Joey Shaw of the Hoosiers stole an inbounds pass and scored to make it a one-possession game. But Indiana's Lance Stemler missed a closely guarded 3- pointer, and Jodie Meeks made two free throws with six seconds left to clinch the win. Kentucky, which has concentrated on defense in recent practices, held Indiana to 30 percent shooting. "We defended OK, probably good enough to win," first-year Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson said. "I thought we rebounded well enough to win. But you've got to make shots." Indiana's tough defense and Kentucky's poor shooting allowed the Hoosiers to build a seven-point lead midway through the first half, silencing the crowd. But Kentucky quickly found a high-percentage shot: the dunk. A thundering one by Morris woke up the building. Amid the noise the Hoosiers, who had only one turnover to that point, committed four in the next two minutes, allowing the Wildcats to go ahead in one of 14 lead changes in the game. Derrick Jasper followed Morris' theatrics with a steal and dunk on Kentucky's next trip down court, and fellow freshman Perry Stevenson added another dunk a few possessions later. Kentucky No. 20/22 68
UCLA No. 5/5 73
Luc Richard Mbah A Moute scored 18 points despite playing
the final 8 1/2 minutes with four fouls, leading No. 5 UCLA to a 73-
68 victory over No. 20 Kentucky in the semifinals of the EA Sports
Maui Invitational.
Mbah A Moute scored six of UCLA's last 10 points, ignoring the
foul trouble to go inside for the first four points and then throwing
down a dunk on the break to make it 69-65 with 25 seconds to play.
Kentucky got to 71-68 on a layup by Randolph Morris with 2
seconds to go, but Arron Afflalo, who struggled from the field all
game, made two free throws with .6 seconds to go for the final margin.
Afflalo finished with 14 points on 5-for-18 shooting, including 1-
for-8 from 3-point range, while Lorenzo Mata added 12 points and
11 rebounds.
Joe Crawford had 16 points for the Wildcats, while freshman
guard Derrick Jasper had 12 points and nine rebounds.
UCLA jumped out to a 26-9 lead, but the Wildcats were able to
get it down to 38-30 at halftime.
The final 10 minutes were the kind of game one would expect
from the two most successful programs in college basketball history
- UCLA holds a record 11 NCAA championships, four ahead of
runner-up Kentucky.
The Wildcats were finally able to tie the game for the first time
at 48 on a 3 by Crawford with 11:46 to play, and their first lead of
the game came 1:24 later on two free throws by Jasper.
There were three lead changes and four ties the rest of the way
and neither team managed more than a five-point lead until
Afflalo's dunk with 8 seconds left made it 71-65.
Mbah A Moute scored down low to make it 67-62 with 2:20 left
and Crawford answered with a three-point play 18 seconds later.
After a Kentucky turnover and a UCLA miss, Wildcats coach
Tubby Smith called two timeouts in a 13-second span, but Bruins
point guard Darren Collison foiled any strategy by stealing the ball
from Ramel Bradley and then found Mbah A Moute on the break for
the game-clinching dunk.
Afflalo, one of two returning starters from last season's national
runner-up, entered the game shooting 56 percent from the field
and 55 percent on 3s. In his first two seasons at UCLA he shot 46
percent overall and 37 percent from beyond the arc.
KENTUCKY BASKETBALL
Honolulu, Hi. • Nov. 22, 2006
Memphis No. 11/12 80
Kentucky No. 20/22 63
Freshman Willie Kemp scored 10 of his 12 points in the opening
four minutes of the second half and No. 12 Memphis topped
No. 20 Kentucky in an 80-63 victory in the third-place game of the
EA Sports Maui Invitational.
The Tigers were too fast for the Wildcats because of Kemp and
fellow guard Andre Allen pushing the ball on the break. And they
were too much inside with 6-foot-9, 260-pound Joey Dorsey keying
the game-breaking 14-0 run in the second half with two monster
dunks.
Memphis bounced back from a disheartening 92-85 semifinal
loss to No. 19 Georgia Tech, a game which the Tigers held a 16-
point halftime lead only to be outrebounded 29-9 in the second
half.
There was no problem on the boards against Kentucky.
Memphis had a 38-27 rebound advantage, including 11-5 on the
offensive end.
Center Randolph Morris was most of Kentucky's offense
throughout the first 30 minutes of the game. He finished with 18
points and Joe Crawford had 15.
Robert Dozier, who was scoreless and fouled out in the loss to
Georgia Tech, had 15 points for Memphis, while Chris Douglas-
Roberts and Jeremy Hunt each had 13. Dorsey finished with six
points and seven rebounds.
Memphis led 43-40 after a first half that saw four lead changes
and two ties over the final seven minutes. That all changed at the
start of the second half when the 6-2 Kemp, who started all four
games and came in averaging 8.7 points, took over.
He was scoreless in eight minutes in the first half after picking
up two fouls. He hit two 3s then scored twice on drives as the
Tigers took a 55-46 lead four minutes into the second half.
The pace of the game changed to what the Tigers like and
Kentucky suddenly wasn't getting any offense from Morris down
low.
Dorsey dunked to start the deciding 14-0 run. He then blocked
a shot by Sheray Thomas and took off on the break. The run was
worth it when he took a short pass on the wing and threw down a
power dunk. Kentucky coach Tubby Smith called a timeout but the
tide was definitely the Tigers' way.
Antonio Anderson's 3-pointer with 8:21 to go capped the run
and Memphis was up 73-50.
The third-place finish matched Memphis' best (1992) in four
appearances on Maui.
Kentucky, which lost 73-68 to No. 5 UCLA in the semifinals,
won the tournament in 1993, and finished third in 1997 and 2002.
Col. of Charleston 61
Kentucky 77
Freshman Perry Stevenson came off the bench for the first time
with a career-high 14 points as Kentucky rebounded from a setback
in the Maui Invitational with a 77-61 victory over College of
Charleston.
Randolph Morris led the Wildcats with 17 points and eight
rebounds, but it was Stevenson who nailed the early shots with the
game on the line. He missed all three free-throw attempts but connected
on all seven field-goal tries -- more than doubling his previous
high of three.
The Wildcats, who dropped out of the Top 25 this week after
losses in Maui against now-No. 1 UCLA and Memphis, missed
their first nine shots and didn't hit a field goal until more than six
minutes had passed.
Stevenson's dunk pulled the Wildcats to within three points
midway through the first half and began a 17-0 run that buried the
Cougars.
Seconds later, Stevenson showed off a new signature move --
an under-the-basket hook flip that gave the Wildcats their first lead
at 12-11. He did it again the next time down, drawing the foul --
albeit missing the free throw -- in the process.
Charleston's star guard Dontaye Draper had only two points in
the first half but found his shot in the second, leading the Cougars
with 15 points.
