UK-GEORGIA SERIES HISTORY • This is the 128th meeting between the Wildcats and the Bulldogs. • Kentucky is 106-21 all-time against Georgia. • UK has won five in a row against Georgia, including last year’s series sweep (69-55 in Athens; 68-61 in Lexington) • Kentucky owns the series’ longest winning streak at 20 consecutive victories from 1950- 1966. • The Wildcats are 36-14 all-time against Georgia in Athens and 29-11 against the Bulldogs in Stegeman Coliseum. UK is 29-13 all-time in Georgia’s home arena, having lost two games (107-83 to Western Kentucky; 91-74 to Marquette) in the 1971 NCAA Tournament. • Tubby Smith is 15-4 against his former school, with all games being played since he came to Kentucky. SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS • Located in Athens, Ga. (378 miles south of Lexington), Georgia is in the SEC’s East division. • Georgia enters Wednesday’s game with a 3-2 record in league play. The Bulldogs come into the game off a heartbreaking loss at No. 10 Alabama on Saturday, where they never trailed until a buzzer-beating shot by Ronald Steele sank the Bulldogs 78-76. • Prior to the Alabama game, the Bulldogs had won three league games in a row (vs. USC, vs. Vanderbilt, at Arkansas). They are also one of only four teams (Kentucky, Florida, Vanderbilt) to have a league road win, doing so at Arkansas. • The Bulldogs are under the direction of fifthyear head coach George Felton. Felton has guided Georgia to a 50-55 record. He is 150-109 in nine years as a head coach, having served as the head man at Western Kentucky for five years before going to Athens. Felton is 3-5 against UK. PEACH STATE SUCCESS Over the years, the Wildcats have met with success when it comes to schools from the Peach State. Kentucky possesses a 168-37 (.820) record against teams from the state of Georgia. The bulk of UK’s games against Georgia based teams have come against SEC rival Georgia (106-21). The Wildcats also enjoy a 99-43 record when playing in the state of Georgia. WHO AM I? Bespectacled, husky-voiced and heavily built (though he has lost weight in recent years), this Georgia attendee has been one of Hollywood's busiest and most recognizable character actors since the early-1990s. He was an undergraduate at the University of Georgia where a professor once told him that if he loved the theatre, he should stay big. He left the college as an honor student but one credit shy of a degree to pursue his career at the Barter Theatre in Virginia. He is best known for his role as Newman, the self-serving postman on the hit TV show Seinfeld. Answer: Wayne Knight UK-GEORGIA CONNECTIONS • Kentucky coach Tubby Smith first joined the SEC as a head coach in Athens, leading the Georgia Bulldogs from 1996-1997. Smith totaled a 45-19 record while in Athens, guiding the Bulldogs to two NCAA Tournament appearances, including a run to the 1996 Sweet 16. • Kentucky junior Randolph Morris and freshman Jodie Meeks hail from the Peach State. Morris (Atlanta) is making his fourth appearance in his home state where he has posted a 4-1 record. Meeks (Norcross) is returning to Georgia for the first time. • Georgia head coach George Felton served as the head coach at Western Kentucky University during the 1999-03 seasons. Felton posted a 100- 54 record as the head coach of the Hilltoppers. • UGA associate head coach Pete Herrmann was an assistant under Felton at Western Kentucky. • Bulldog freshman Albert Jackson is from Earlington, Ky. Prior to transferring to Oak Hill Academy for his senior season, Jackson was one of the top big men in Kentucky, playing at Hopkins Central H.S. in Madisonville. Jackson also played football at Hopkins Central. CATS COME AND GO IN RANKINGS After an eight-week hiatus Kentucky returned to the ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll this week at No. 25, but dropped out of the AP Top 25. The Wildcats had entered the AP rankings at No. 25 last week. The Cats began the season ranked 22nd and rose as high as No. 20 before losing twice in Maui to ranked foes. CATS LEAD SEC IN DEFENSE Through five conference games, UK leads the SEC in scoring defense (59.2), holding four of its five opponents to 60 or fewer points. Kentucky also tops the league in field goal percentage defense (.360). The Wildcats also lead the league (and are sixth nationally) in overall field goal percentage defense at .372, which is the lowest opponent field goal percentage against UK since the 1961-62 Cats held foes to just .368. SEC DOMINATION Since the SEC’s inception in 1932-33, the Wildcats have been the most dominant team in the league, recording an 837-222 mark (.790). Only one other team has won more than 680 regular-season SEC games (Alabama) and no other team has a better winning percentage. UK has averaged 11.4 wins and 3.1 losses per season in 73 seasons in the SEC. • The Wildcats have won 43 SEC titles and 25 SEC Tournament Championships, more than the other 11 teams combined. • Kentucky has won 10 of the last 15 SEC Tournament titles. • UK has won 11 SEC East titles in the 15 seasons since the league expanded. • Tubby Smith is in his 12th season in the SEC this year - including two at Georgia and nine at 2006-07 SEC STANDINGS EASTERN DIVISION (thru 1/22) Team SEC Pct.
