WILDCATS LOOK TO EXTEND CURRENT UNBEATEN STREAK
The Wildcats look to ride their current momentum as they host the Ole Miss Rebels while riding a
three-match unbeaten streak. Kentucky enters the match off a 2-1 win over Arkansas and a 1-1 tie
with then No. 24 LSU. It’s the longest such streak for UK in the conference this season.
The Kentucky offense has come to life in their last four matches as the Cats have tallied six goals
while averaging just over 18 shots per match.
Sunday’s match will mark the final home match for Kentucky seniors Caitlin Coughlin, Kelsey
Fenix, Sarah Gaunt, Megan Jones, Callie Lanphier and Kate Rowlands.
QUICK NOTES
• Kentucky’s eight-match unbeaten streak to start the season was snapped against Auburn. It was tied for second
on the school’s all-time unbeaten streak list. The 1999 team reeled off 16-straight games without a loss
including 15 straight wins. The 2000 club posted eight straight games without a loss including seven
straight wins.
• Kentucky is now 7-2-0 all-time mark against Mississippi State including a 4-1-0 record in Starkville.
The Wildcats have won three in a row against the Bulldogs dating black to the 2005 season.
• The Wildcats are now 15-6-1 all-time against teams from Mississippi. However, all those games
have come against SEC foes Mississippi State (7-2-0) and Ole Miss (8-4-1).
• Kentucky is 8-4-1 all-time against Ole Miss which includes a 1-2-0 mark in Lexington. The two teams
fought to a 0-0 tie last season in Oxford before UK defeated the Rebels 3-2 in the SEC Tournament.
• The Wildcats are 8-5-2 all-time on Senior Day. Last season, Kentucky defeated the Vanderbilt
Commodores 1-0 in their final match at the UK Soccer Complex.
• Kentucky is unbeaten in their last three matches in the league, the teams longest such streak in SEC
play this season.
LIPKA RETURNS FOR 16TH SEASON
• UK Coach Warren Lipka, the dean of Southeastern Conference coaches, returns to Kentucky
for his 16th season and has coached the Wildcat program since its inception. In
2003, Lipka joined Florida Coach Becky Burleigh as the only coaches in SEC history to
Lipka owns a .573 winning percentage by way of his 174-126-28 overall record
while leading the Wildcats to every SEC Tournament since the league began sponsoring
women’s soccer in 1993, the longest streak in SEC history.
Lipka spent time with the U.S. U-19 Women's National Team for the second time in as
many offseasons over the summer. Serving as the goalkeepers' coach, Lipka helped Team
USA to a berth in the 2004 FIFA Under-19 Women's World Championship. Lipka's
keepers never surrendered a goal in- wins over the Dominican Republic and Trinidad and
Tobago and a tie against Costa Rica.
Lipka also served a similar role with the U.S. U-19 and U-21 Women's National Teams
during the summer of 2003, traveling with the teams to Germany and the Netherlands.
Since the SEC began sponsoring soccer in
1993, the Wildcats have been a part of the
league’s postseason tournament all fourteen
years.
FRESHMEN PHENOMS
was the torch bearer for the UK offense, finishing
the season as the team leader in goals and
points and being named a freshman All-American.
This season its freshmen Alicia Browning
and Laura Novikoff leading the UK offense.
Anna Goblirsch went to Mississippi St. from
Elizabethtown, Kentucky where she attended
Elizabethtown High School.
SHUTOUT
• History shows that when the Wildcats post a
victory over the Bulldogs, they do so with a
smothering defense. Of Kentucky’s six wins
over the ‘Dawgs, five have come via the
shutout.
CATS ROCK AT HOME
• UK has won 17 and tied six of its last 29
matches at home in the last three seasons. The
Wildcats are 5-2-1 at home this season and
65-39-10 (.614) all-time at the UK Soccer
Complex.
The UK Soccer Complex attendance record
was set on Oct. 1, 2006 when 1,488 fans
packed the stadium to see the Wildcats defeat
the Alabama Crimson Tide 3-0. This season,
the Cats’ largest crowd came in UK’s match
against Tennessee on Oct. 12, when 1,006
came through the gates.
WE’RE STREAKING
• Senior midfielder Sarah Gaunt is one of the
most experienced players on the team having
played in 79 career games (second only to Callie
Lanphier’s 81 games played). However, the
most impressive stat is that Gaunt has started
in all 79 matches and looks to keep her 79-
match starting streak intact when Kentucky
takes on Mississippi State and Ole Miss. Junior
defender Tara Herold ranks second on the
team in consecutive starts, having received the
starting nod in 62 straight games. Kim Bucci
is UK’s all-time leader in games started and
played with 87.
HONORS AND PRIVILEGES
• Freshman Sydney Hiance was rewarded for her
two-shutout week against Morehead State and
No. 22 Louisville when she was named the
SEC’s Freshman of the Week on Sept. 24.
It was the first SEC weekly honor for the
Wildcats this season.
(10/25) UK head coach Warren Lipka became
IMPRESSIVE DEBUTS
• Who wouldn’t enjoy their home debut?? The
UK women’s soccer team seems to take it to
another level when playing their home
lidlifter. Including their 2007 home-opener,
the Wildcats have scored three or more goals
seven times in 16 matches. Those six occurrences
include scores of 9-0 (Valparaiso, ‘93),
6-0 (Davidson, ‘03), 8-2 (Western Kentucky,
‘04), 7-0 (Eastern Kentucky, ‘06) and 4-1 in
cats have outscored the opposition 29-5 over
the course of the last six years in their home
debut.
IMPRESSIVE INDIVIDUAL DEBUTS
• Not to be lost in the Kentucky’s home-opening
success was the play of several Wildcats.
Four different Cats scored a goal against
Evansville, the first time that’s happened since
five Wildcats scored against Eastern Kentucky
on Sept. 1, 2006.
Included in those goal scorers were sophomore
Cindy Abbott and freshman Alicia Browning.
Both scored their first goal on the collegiate
level.
In addition, Laura Baker allowed the first goal
of her collegiate career, snapping her 211
minute scoreless streak.
CATS PICKED FIFTH
• In the preseason vote of Southeastern Conference
head coaches, Kentucky was picked to
finish fifth in the Eastern division. However,
the Wildcats did receive a vote to win the
league from one coach. Florida, Tennessee,
Vanderbilt and Georgia were picked to finish
ahead of the Cats in the East. Auburn was
picked to win the Western division, followed
by Ole Miss, LSU, Arkansas, Alabama and
Mississippi State respectively.
CAT FACTS
All Heart
• Most students spend their summers going to
the beach or vacationing somewhere else. Not
Kelsey Fenix, she was volunteering at St.
Joseph Hospital in the surgery unit, when one
day she asked if she could get into any surgeries
and they asked if she was interested in
watching heart surgery?!?! In her words, “It
was freaking awesome!!”
Running Woman
• There was no chance sophomore Cindy Abbott
was going to slack off in her fitness. She
passed her time over the summer training for
and running in an 18-mile trail race.
Reality Winner
• In an informal survey, junior Kate Hughes was
selected as the player most likely to star in a
Reality Show. Hughes’ PR campaign may have
already begun as she is featured on UK’s SEE
BLUE billboard in her hometown of Brentwood,
Tenn. on Clinton County Hwy 127
and Clinton County Hwy 90..
Athletes in Action
• Nathalie Bolder, Kelsey Fenix and Kristin
Kover didn’t spend their summer laying
around. Instead they traveled to Colorado
where they participated in the Athletes in Action
Ultimate Training Camp.
Family of Wildcats
• Kate Rowlands isn’t the only Kentucky Wildcat
in her family. Her sister Annie signed with
the Wildcats to play softball and will make her
debut this spring.
Hidden Talents
• The Wildcats have proven their abilities on the
field, however there are several hobbies the
Cats excel at off the field including:
Becky Davenport: speaks fluent Spanish
Sarah Gaunt: is a BMX racer
Sydney Hiance: writes her own music
Nicola Holdsworth: is good with brain teasers
Laura Novikoff: plays the guitar
Ashley Stack: is a skimboarder
MATCH 1
KENTUCKY 0, PURDUE 0 2OT
August 31, 2007 - W. Lafayette, Ind.
The Kentucky Wildcat women’s soccer team
picked up where it left off last season, as its defense
continued to stifle the opposition as the
Cats shutout the No. 15 (NSCAA) ranked Purdue
Boilermakers in a 0-0 tie.
In her first career action in the net, freshman
goalie Laura Baker came up with five saves in
110 minutes of action to record her first career
shutout.
Both teams fought to a scoreless draw through
the first 45 minutes, but not without some fireworks
as both teams logged two shots on goal.
The Boilermakers had the first legitimate scoring
opportunity in the 23rd minute when Jessica
Okoroafo took the ball off a corner kick and
fired a shot that hit off the right post. The ball
rebounded into a cluster of players in front of the
goal where Okoroafo got a solid head on the ball,
but Baker was there for the save.
Kentucky answered in the 37th minute when
Tara Herold’s corner kick was cleared weakly by
Purdue. Laura Speer took the loose ball and fired
a shot that Purdue goalie Jenny Bradfisch pushed
just to the right of the goal on a diving save.
The score remained locked at 0-0 through the
second half despite two golden opportunities for
the Boilermakers. Shauna Stapleton took a shot
off a free kick just outside the top of the 18-yard
box after a foul was called on the Wildcats’ Kate
Hughes. Laura Baker was there for the save to
keep the game deadlocked.
Purdue’s second chance came with 4:36 left in
regulation when Okoroafo got a shot over the
Kentucky defense that hit off the crossbar before
being corralled by Baker.
The Wildcats had their best scoring opportunity
in extra three minutes into the first overtime
when freshman Laura Novikoff found herself
wide open and took a shot from 15 yards out
that sailed inches over the crossbar.
Novikoff led the Wildcats with five shots while
Tara Herold, Kate Hughes and Julie Hull all
played the entire 110 minutes.
MATCH 2
KENTUCKY 1, LOYOLA-CHICAGO 0
September 2, 2007 - W. Lafayette, Ind.
Freshman Laura Novikoff picked a fine time
to score her first career goal as she found the back
of the net with 5:03 left in the match to lift Kentucky
(1-0-1) to a 1-0 victory over Loyola-
Chicago (0-2-0).
Callie Lanphier pushed the ball down the right
side and sent it into the middle where it was
gathered up by Nicola Holdsworth who laid it
off to Novikoff. Novikoff took the pass and
scored the Cats’ first goal of the season for the
game-winner.
Freshman goalie Laura Baker recorded her second
straight shutout of the season while knocking
away six Loyola shots en route to being
named the tournament’s defensive MVP with
two shutouts.
The Wildcats claimed second place in the
Boilermaker Challenge Cup, scoring four points
with a win and a tie, finishing as runner-up to
the Louisville Cardinals who gained six points on
two wins.
It looked as if UK was going to score early and
often as they created scoring opportunities in the
first 14 minutes, but the Loyola defense settled
down and held the Cats at bay for the majority
of the first half.
The Ramblers had their best chance in the
23rd minute when Cynthi Morote-Ariza took a
shot off a free kick that grazed over the outstretched
arms of Baker, but Lanphier was there
to knock the ball away and keep the game locked
at 0-0.
The Ramblers threatened to open the scoring
in the 74th minute when Alexia Murray beat
Kate Hughes and found herself wide open just
inside the 18-yard box where she fired off a shot,
but Baker was there for the save.
Prior to Novikoff’s goal, Kentucky’s offensive
scoreless streak stretched to 328 minutes dating
back to last season as the Wildcats were shutout
in the NCAA Tournament to end the 2006 season
and didn’t scratch a goal in their 0-0 tie with
Purdue Friday night.
KENTUCKY 4, EVANSVILLE 1
September 5, 2007 - Lexington, Ky.
The Kentucky women’s soccer team (2-0-1)
brought the offense with two first half goals and
an additional pair in the second half en route to a
4-1 home opening victory over the Evansville
Purple Aces (2-1-0).
Kentucky wasted little time getting on the
board with Callie Lanphier netting her first goal
of the season and 10th of her career, nearly eight
minutes into the match. Nicola Holdsworth
played a ball down the left sideline that Sarah
Gaunt centered to Lanphier who finished off the
shot for the 1-0 UK lead.
The Purple Aces answered quickly when
Nicole Moyen sailed a shot from 30 yards out
into the upper right corner of the goal tying the
score at 1-1.
Cindy Abbott reclaimed the lead for the Wildcats
with 4:11 left in the first half when she took
a shot off a centering pass from Kate Rowlands
and looped it over the outstretched arms of
Theresa Bagby for a 2-1 UK lead heading into
the half. The goal was the first of Abbott’s collegiate
career.
The Cats tacked on two insurance goals in the
second half, getting scores from Laura Novikoff,
her second of the season, and Alicia Browning,
her first collegiate goal.
The last time UK had four different players
net goals was in a 7-0 rout of Eastern Kentucky
on Sept. 1, 2006.
MATCH 4
KENTUCKY 4, BOWLING GREEN 0
September 7, 2007 - Lexington, Ky.
Freshman Alicia Browning of Ft. Thomas, Ky.
netted two goals against Bowling Green to lead
the Kentucky women’s soccer team to a 4-0 victory
on a beautiful Friday night at the UK Soccer
Complex.
Kentucky (3-0-1) was able to break through
for its first goal at the 8:46 mark of the first half.
Alicia Browning was able to connect on her second
goal of the season on a cross from Ashley
Stack that she was able to deflect into the back of
the net past a helpless Zabek.
With the late first half goal, UK was able to
head to the locker room with a slender lead at 1-
0. The Wildcats outshot the Falcons (1-2-0) 6-3
in the first half, creating more scoring chances, as
well as staying in their form.
A Kentucky goal by Laura Novikoff in the
30th minute gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. It was
the freshman’s third goal on the season, and her
third in as many games.
In the 65th minute, the Wildcats were able to
increase their lead to 3-0 when Megan Jones
crossed a ball into the box where it bounced
around before the goal keeper could get a hand
on it. When she did, it was deflected to Browning
who was able to volley it from her right foot
into the goal. It was her second goal on the
night, and third on the season, matching
Novikoff for the team lead.
The Wildcats scored one last goal in the 89th
minute as a run by Sarah Gaunt was crossed into
the box. It scooted past Novikoff and landed at
the feet of Callie Lanphier. Lanphier was able to
one-time it past the Bowling Green goalie, into
the upper-90 on the right side for the score.
The Wildcats outshot the Falcons 15-7 and
were able to control the pace for much of the
match with Jones and Gaunt setting up their
teammates numerous times throughout the
night. In goal, Laura Baker made some terrific
saves for the Wildcats, earning her third shutout
in four games this season.
KENTUCKY 4, OHIO 2
September 9, 2007 - Lexington, Ky.
After a lethargic first half, the Kentucky
women’s soccer team (4-0-1) scored two early
second half goals in less than a minute and held
off a late Ohio charge to claim a 4-2 win over the
Ohio Bobcats (0-3-1).
Following a half where UK tallied only four
shots, the Wildcat offense came out firing on all
cylinders, scoring two goals in the first 4:14 of
the second half.
Nicola Holdsworth got the offense going three
and half minutes after the start of the second
half. Laura Novikoff took a centering pass in the
middle of the 18-yard box and attempted a
header, but Ohio goalie Dominique Wright got
just enough of a hand on the ball to deflect it
over to Holdsworth who chipped the ball into
the empty net for 2-1 UK lead and her first goal
of the season.
Only 44 seconds later, the Wildcats were at it
again when Sarah Gaunt sent a throw in to
Novikoff who fired off a shot from nearly 30
yards out, passed Wright, for a 3-1 Wildcat lead.
It was Novikoff’s team leading fourth goal of the
season and her fourth in as many matches.
The Bobcats made things interesting in the
78th minute when Erika Schmitt buried a shot
from 30 yards out, just to the left of UK goalie
Laura Baker, but a late goal from Callie Lanphier
pushed the Kentucky lead back to two goals at 4-
2. It was the third straight game that the Wildcats
have notched four goals.
Kate Hughes got the Wildcats on the scoreboard
in the 14th minute when she took a corner
kick from Tara Herold and headed the ball past
Bobcat goalie Jess Maclean for 1-0 UK lead. It
was Hughes’ first goal of the season and the second
of her career.
Ohio’s Callie Broomfield scored the equalizer
with 19:05 left in the half when she found a
loose ball in front of the goal and pushed it past
UK goalie Laura Baker for the Bobcats’ first goal
of the season.
UK’s 4-0-1 start is the program’s best start
since opening the 2001 season with seven
straight victories.
KENTUCKY 2, MARSHALL 1 (2OT)
September 16, 2007 - Huntington, W.Va.
Kate Hughes knocked home a header with :03
left in the second overtime that lifted the Kentucky
women’s soccer team (5-0-1) to a 2-1 double-overtime
victory over the Marshall
Thundering Herd (2-4-0).
Knotted at 1-1 late in the second overtime, it
looked as if the Wildcats were going to notch
their second tie of the season. However, a late
foul on the Thundering Herd gave the Wildcats a
free kick on the right side of the goal near the
touch line. Julie Hull took the kick and sent a
ball back post where Kate Hughes got a solid
head on the ball and put it past Marshall goalie
Liz Orton for the game-winner. It was Hughes’
second goal of the season.
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the 18th
minute on a beautifully played ball by Nicola
Holdsworth. Megan Jones sent a ball to the top
of the 18-yard box where Holdsworth brought it
down with her chest and got a solid shot off for
her second goal of the season and the UK lead.
Marshall answered in the 70th minute when
Kassie Hollman took a pass from Erin Johnson
and knocked it passed UK freshman goalie Sydney
Hiance for her second goal of the season.
The Wildcats out shot the Thundering Herd
23-13, led for the fourth time this season by
freshman Laura Novikoff with five.
Hiance recorded her first start of the season
and collected her first win, allowing just one goal
KENTUCKY 1, MOREHEAD STATE 0
September 20, 2007 - Lexington, Ky.
The Kentucky women’s soccer team pushed its
unbeaten streak to seven games with a 1-0 victory
against the Morehead State Eagles (1-4-0) at
the UK Soccer Complex Thursday night.
Alicia Browning got the Wildcats (6-0-1) on the
board in the 40th minute when Callie Lanphier
sent a crossing pass to Katie Fahey who flicked
the ball off her head to Browning. The freshman
from Ft. Wright, Ky. settled the ball and looped a
shot over the head of Eagle goalie Leslie King for
her fourth goal of the season and a 1-0 Wildcat
lead.
Despite the Kentucky victory, which gives the
Wildcats’ the longest unbeaten streak in the
league this season, head coach Warren Lipka wasn’t
pleased with his team’s outing for the second
straight match.
The Wildcat defense flexed its muscle and
helped freshman goalie Sydney Hiance record her
first collegiate shutout, limiting Morehead State
to just six shots and only one on goal.
Freshman Laura Novikoff led the Wildcats
with four shots while she and Nicola Holdsworth
shared top honors with three shots on goal each.
MATCH 8
KENTUCKY 0, #22 LOUISVILLE 0 (2OT)
September 23, 2007 - Louisville, Ky.
For the second straight season, the Kentucky
and No. 22 ranked Louisville women’s soccer
teams needed extra time to determine a winner,
however none was found at Cardinal Park on
Sunday as the two teams played to a 0-0 draw.
After a scoreless first 90 minutes, the Wildcats
(6-0-2) took control throughout most of the
extra 20 minutes and while they mounted a couple
legitimate scoring opportunities, they were
never able to find the back of the net.
Kentucky threatened to claim victory in the
second overtime when Megan Jones drew a foul
just outside the top of the 18-yard box with
barely approximately 5:00 left. Tara Herold took
the free kick but sent the ball just over the top of
the cross bar.
The Wildcats had the best chance to score of
either team in the first overtime when Sarah
Gaunt found herself with an open shot approximately
12 yards out with 1:08 left in the first 10-
minute overtime period, but fired a shot over the
top of the goal.
The Cardinals had the game’s first real scoring
opportunity in the 22nd minute when Kentucky
was called for a foul just above the 18-yard box.
Monique Gjini took the free kick for Louisville
but fired a shot right in the Wildcats’ defensive
wall.
The Cardinals had a golden opportunity to get
on the board with 20:40 left in the first half
when Gjini crossed a pass right in front of the
UK goal to Shannon Smyth who fired a shot
from point blank range, but UK freshman goalie
Sydney Hiance deflected the shot away to keep
the match scoreless.
Hiance kept the Cardinals out of the net again
in the 34th minute when Jen Avila found herself
on a breakaway. Hiance came off her spot and
met Avila at the top of the box where she tipped
Avila’s shot up just enough for Ashley Stack to
come over and clear the ball.
The Wildcats had their first scoring opportunity
late in the first half when Kristin Kover took
a corner kick with 3:10 left in the half and sent it
to a wide open Nathalie Bolder in front of the
Louisville goal. Bolder got a solid head on the
ball but pushed it just over the cross bar.
The shutout was Hiance’s second straight and
the Wildcats’ fifth this season.
AUBURN 4, KENTUCKY 1
September 28, 2007 - Auburn, Ala.
After starting the season on an eight-game unbeaten
streak, the Kentucky women’s soccer team
(6-1-2, 0-1-0) dropped its first match of the SEC
season, a 4-1 loss to the Auburn Tigers (5-2-1, 1-
0-0).
The Tigers spotted Kentucky a 1-0 lead, and
then scored four unanswered goals en route to
the win. The four goals allowed by the Wildcats
was the most surrendered by a UK team since
losing a 4-2 match to the Florida Gators on Oct.
7, 2005.
The Wildcats scratched the board first when
Kelsey Fenix sent a ball over the top that was
chased down by Ashley Stack. Stack then pushed
a shot to the left of Auburn goalie Allison Whitworth
for her first collegiate goal and a 1-0 lead
in the 12th minute.
Auburn wasted not time answering when two
minutes later, Gabi Rivera found a loose ball at
the top of the six yard box and hit a shot just inside
the right post tying the game at 1-1.
Auburn struck immediately in the second half
when two minutes into the second frame, Kara
Kasten sent a perfect centering pass in front of
the UK goal that found a streaking Caitlin King
who finished strongly for a 2-1 Auburn lead.
The Tigers struck again at the 56:49 mark
when Jenni Prescott took a shot from 25 yards
out that floated over the outstretched arms of
UK goalie Sydney Hiance for a 3-1 Auburn lead.
Auburn extended its lead at the 61:32 mark
when Becca Howell laced a shot over Hiance that
ended up in the upper left 90 of the goal for a 4-
1 Auburn lead.
With the score tied at 1-1 and the clock winding
For the first time this season, the Wildcats
yielded the first goal. The Crimson Tide struck
first with 8:29 left in the first half when Alex
Butera picked up a loose ball in front of the
Wildcat goal and pushed a shot just past UK
Kentucky tied it at 1-1 in the 62nd minute
The Wildcats had a golden opportunity to
#20 SOUTH CAROLINA 2, KENTUCKY 0
October 5, 2007 - Columbia, SC
Unable to get much offense going, the Kentucky
women’s soccer team (6-3-2, 0-3-0 SEC)
dropped its third straight match in conference
play losing on the road to No. 20 South Carolina
(9-3-0, 1-2-0) 2-0.
For the second straight match the Wildcats fell
behind 1-0. The Gamecocks took the first lead in
the 17th minute, when Mary Worthen took a
pass from Danila Monteiro and centered it up for
Ashley Kirk who pushed it past Wildcat goalie
Sydney Hiance just inside the right post.
The Gamecocks controlled the tempo in the
first half outshooting the Wildcats 8-2 while controlling
the ball in Kentucky’s zone for the majority
of the first 45 minutes.
South Carolina threatened to extend their lead
in the 49th minute off a set piece. Brittiny
Rhoades took a free kick from just outside the
right of the 18-yard box. She sent a pass into the
middle to Worthen who chipped a shot at the
goal, but quick reflexes by Hiance kept it a onegoal
affair.
The Wildcats had their best opportunity at
scoring come in the 66th minute. Ashley Stack
sent a ball down the far sideline that Sarah Gaunt
chased down. Gaunt then crossed the ball back
in front of the Gamecock goal where Laura
Novikoff got a leg on the ball but knocked it off
the left post.
South Carolina slammed the door shut with
#25 FLORIDA 1, KENTUCKY 0
October 7, 2007 - Gainesville, Fla.
In a driving rain for the majority of the first
half that left nearly an inch of water on the field,
the UK women’s soccer team (6-4-2, 0-4-0 SEC)
dropped their fourth straight match in league
play, losing to No. 25 Florida (5-4-2, 1-2-0) 1-0.
Florida got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead
in the 23rd minute. Karly Findorff sent a crossing
pass that Stacy Bishop got a head on to
knock the ball home for the lone goal of the
match.
The Gators owned the first half from an offensive
standpoint, outshooting the Wildcats 6-1.
However, the Wildcats had opportunities to attack,
but were whistled offsides four times.
Florida threatened to add an insurance goal in
the 68th minute when Ashley Harris found herself
one-on-one with UK goalie Sydney Hiance,
but Hiance advanced on Harris cutting down the
angle and knocked the ball away.
The Wildcats had their best opportunity to
score in the 75th minute when Kate Rowlands
pushed a perfect centering pass to a streaking
Sarah Gaunt, who took the ball at the top of the
18-yard box, took a couple dribbles and then
pushed a shot past Florida goalie Katie Fraine,
but the ball went just wide of the right post.
Kentucky put together a flurry of shots over
the next two minutes, getting a couple more
good looks at the goal, but the Cats were never
#14 TENNESSEE 1, KENTUCKY 0
October 12, 2007 - Lexington, Ky.
After playing some of its best soccer of the season
for 94 minutes, the Kentucky women’s soccer
team (6-5-2, 0-5-0 SEC) gave up a goal 4:57 into
the first overtime to drop a 1-0 heartbreaker to
No. 14 Tennessee.
The Lady Vols (8-2-2, 3-1-1) finally found the
back of the net when Tanya Emerson took a
loose ball rebound and poked it past UK goalie
Sydney Hiance for the 1-0 victory.
The first 90 minutes were played at a frenetic
pace with both teams pushing the action up and
down the field. The two squads combined for 25
shots with the Lady Vols firing off 14 shots to the
Wildcats’ 11.
The Wildcats had their best opportunity at
breaking the scoreless tie in the 60th minute
when Megan Jones ran down a ball on the touch
line and sent a crossing pass to Callie Lanphier
who took a shot from eight yards out but Jordan
Falcusan was there to knock the ball away.
The Cats threatened again in the 80th minute
when Nicola Holdsworth flicked a ball over the
top of the Tennessee defense that Laura Novikoff
chased down and settled. However her shot from
#18 GEORGIA 1, KENTUCKY 0
October 14, 2007 - Lexington, Ky.
For the second straight match the Kentucky
women’s soccer team (6-6-2, 0-6-0) outplayed its
opponent offensively but had nothing to show
for it as they dropped a 1-0 affair to the 18th
ranked Georgia Bulldogs.
Despite dominating the Bulldogs (12-1-1, 5-
0-1) offensively throughout the entire 90 minutes,
the Wildcats were unable to notch a goal for
the fourth straight match. UK out shot Georgia
16-10 (9-5 in the first half) including a 5-4 shot
on goal discrepancy. The Bulldogs were also
whistled for 15 fouls, to UK’s nine, giving the
Cats several opportunities off set pieces, but still
Kentucky came away empty handed.
In the 10th minute, UK goalie Sydney Hiance
misplayed a ball right in front of the Wildcat
goal, trying to clear the ball. However, the ball
deflected off Georgia’s Carrie Patterson who then
poked it into an empty net for the early Bulldog
lead.
Kentucky had its best opportunity to even the
score in the 72nd minute off a corner kick from
Tara Herold. Herold sent the ball perfectly into
the box where Kate Hughes got a solid head on
KENTUCKY 2, ARKANSAS 1
October 19, 2007 - Lexington, Ky.
It was a three weeks in the making, but the
Kentucky women’s soccer team (7-6-2, 1-6-0) finally
claimed its first win in conference play behind
a 2-1 effort over the Arkansas Lady
Razorbacks (8-7-1, 1-5-1).
Kentucky broke its scoreless streak when
Kelsey Fenix converted on a penalty kick nearly
22 minutes into the first half. The Lady Razorbacks
were whistled for a foul in the box after a
Tara Herold corner kick landed in front of the
goal and two players collided prompting an immediate
whistle from the official. Fenix’s goal
snapped a streak of 416 straight minutes without
a goal, the longest drought in school history.
Arkansas answered in the 35th minute when
Lindsay Patterson sent a long throw into the box
where Kathleen Paulsen flicked the ball in from
eight yards out for the equalizer.
The Wildcats reclaimed the lead nearly three
minutes (38:29) later on another successful
penalty kick by Fenix. UK sent a ball into the
box that Caitlin Coughlin went up to head but
Arkansas goalie Brittni Williams was whistled for
charging. The goal was Fenix’s second of the season
and the first multi-goal effort of the senior’s
career.
The Wildcats were in control of the match the
KENTUCKY 1, #24 LSU 1
October 21, 2007 - Lexington, Ky.
Despite a season high 25 shots, the Kentucky
women’s soccer team (7-6-3, 1-6-1 SEC) was
never able to put the dagger in the heart of the
24th ranked LSU Tigers (10-2-5, 4-1-3) en route
a 1-1 tie.
For the second straight match Kentucky drew
first blood, this time courtesy of Kate Rowlands’
first goal of the season in the 17th minute. Julie
Hull dumped a ball into the LSU box to Rowlands
who then flicked the ball past Tiger goalie
Valerie Vogler for the 1-0 Wildcat lead.
The Tigers had their best scoring opportunity
in the 59th minute when Melissa Clarke fired a
shot on goal from 10 yards out that UK goalie
Sydney Hiance punched away. Michelle
Makasini followed up the rebound with a shot
from five yards out, but Julie Hull was on the
goal line to knock the ball away.
LSU tied it moments later at the 59:33 mark
when Taryne Boudreau took a perfect centering
pass from Malorie Rutledge and headed it just
inside the left post to even the score at 1-1.
Rowlands and freshman Kelly Miller paced the
Wildcat offense with four shots, a career high for
both players.
Hiance was busy between the posts, tying her
career high with 10 saves while the Wildcat defense
faced 23 shots, the most since the Florida
Gators tallied 27 in the 2006 SEC Tournament
Championship. Meanwhile the UK offense
posted 25 shots, the most by the Wildcats since
Despite driving rain and temperatures in the
3, 2-6-1) claimed a 3-2 victory over the Mississippi
State Bulldogs (6-10-1, 2-6-1).
The Wildcats notched two first half goals for
the second straight match and dominated play
offensively, outshooting the Bulldogs 18-10 and
then fended off a mad MSU rally with two minutes
left for the victory.
Sarah Gaunt got the Wildcats on the board in
the 21st minute, marking the third straight
match Kentucky has struck first. Megan Jones
sent a long crossing pass in front of the Bulldog
goal. Mississippi State goalie Taryn Holland went
up for the ball but it squirted through her hands
to Gaunt who put it in for her first goal of the
season and a 1-0 lead.
Kentucky extended its lead to 2-0 with 3:14
left in the first half when Tara Herold sent a free
kick into the 18-yard box. Mississippi State’s
Hannah Tyler went high for the header but deflected
the ball into her own goal resulting in
Kentucky’s two-goal lead.
Nicola Holdsworth gave the Wildcats a 3-0
lead in the 80th minute when she got a solid
the back of the net for her third goal of the season.
The Bulldogs got on the board with 2:05 left
in the match when Herold was whistled for a
