HONORS HISTORY RECORDS REVIEW STAFF WILDCATS OUTLOOK KENTUCKY UK HOOPS SENIOR CLASS Seniors Chanté Bowman, Sarah Elliott and Samantha Mahoney will forever leave a mark on the Kentucky women’s basketball program. Add current red-shirt senior Eleia Roddy into the mix and you have the fearless foursome that has been the heart of Kentucky’s return to the national spotlight since their arrival as freshmen in 2004-05. Since their first season, the Wildcats: • Charted an overall 77-55 record (58.3 percent) • Participated in four consecutive postseason tournaments (one NCAA, three WNIT) for the first time in school history • Recorded back-to-back 20-win seasons in 2005-06 and 2006-07 for the first time since the 1989-90 and 1990-91 • Ranked in the nation’s top 25 in average attendance four straight seasons • Achieved a top four ranking in the SEC standings two of the last three seasons “You can look at the numbers and you can tell how much the program changed with this senior class,” UK head coach Matthew Mitchell said. “I remember recruiting them in high school and I have seen how much the attitude of this program has changed because of them. The number that is most telling is the fact that in the four years before they got here, Kentucky won 41 games and, together, they won 77 games in four years. They really changed the attitude of this program and that’s the most special thing about them. That is hard to do in this league and, if we are able to continue our success, you can look back and point to this class as the one that got it going. Kentucky will forever be better because this class of seniors decided to come here.” BUTTS NAMED HEAD COACH AT ARIZONA Associate head coach Niya Butts resigned in April of 2008 to accept the head coaching position at Arizona. Butts came to Kentucky in 2003 and was an integral part of the Wildcats’ turnaround and ascension back into the national spotlight. She spent four seasons as an assistant coach under Mickie DeMoss before being promoted to associate head coach by Matthew Mitchell in 2007.
