B. Writing with Adverbs
This paragraph is a review of a pilot for a television series. The review could be
improved by the addition of adverbs. On the lines below, rewrite each numbered
sentence. Include an adverb that modifies the boldfaced verb.
(1) I switched my television on with hope in my heart. I had heard
good things about this possible series. (2) For one thing, the producers
had assembled a great cast. (3) All the actors were well respected and
experienced. (4) The writers had good credentials, having worked on the hit
series In My Opinion. (5) But after a few minutes, I felt disappointed. Where
were the clever lines? Where was the chemistry between these actors?
(6) The actors spoke their lines. (7) They seemed detached from the story, and
I understand why. My advice to them would be to disconnect themselves
from this certain flop as quickly as possible and concentrate on more
promising ventures.
