well on the Jennifer Warnes recording,
though Gerard complained of a bottom
end that was too restrained.
At this point you’ve gathered that we
liked the ProAc, but with some reservations.
On the basis of that first session,
we expected it to rate a distant third
against stiff competition. In fact, after
we listened to it in our Kappa system,
we came within an eyelash of actually
buying it.
Our enthusiasm began to grow while
our Moon Attraction processor was feeding
pink noise to each of the speakers in
order to go through the automatic balancing
routine. The pink noise emerging
from the ProAc sounded almost exactly
the way it did coming from our existing
speakers. This one would be a match, no
doubt about it.
And the first film scene we viewed,
the sequence from Amadeus, confirmed

our expectations. For the first time, it
was no longer obvious whether a sound
was coming from a particular speaker,
because the whole sound field blended
into a whole. The choral voices in Abduction
From the Seraglio were superb. Both
in the opera sequence and in the scene
that followed the presence of the actors
in a real space was startling.
On the Harry Potter sequence, the
sound seemed once again seamless,
maintaining the same character even if
it moves across the sound stage. “There’s
nothing that stands out particularly,”
said Albert, and that’s the way it should
be, because there shouldn’t be one element
that overpowers anything else.”
Added Reine, “It has everything it needs
to please the ear and to draw you in.”
This was way better than we had dared
hope.
“This is a speaker of great class,”
said Gerard after we had gone through
the Diva’s ill-fated concert in The Fifth
Element. Voices in general were superb,
and the Diva’s voice was simply extraordinary.
