has a used A28 with a price tag that isn’t
too painful.
My current CD and tuner-based system
is: Theta Pearl CD transport, MSB LinkIII
DAC, Magnum-Dynalab MD-90 FM
tuner, with homegrown silver interconnects
to a bi-amp system consisting of a Moon
I-5 (high frequencies) and Celeste 4070
(low frequencies) into a PSB Subsonic 5
subwoofer and Magnaplanar 1.6QR speakers
through Cardas speaker cables. I like the
music this system produces — it is involving
and reveals the quality of recordings.
I am thinking of changing my amplification.
I am trying to achieve better low level
resolution by beefing up the power with the
relatively inefficient (86 dB) Maggies. The
I-5 gives me a number of choices, but, as
usual, tradeoffs between costs and equipment
abound. I am looking at several options:
1) Pair a Moon W-5 with the I-5 as
preamp, either biamped or as separates. The
gain matching between the W-5 and I-5 in a
bi-amp system may present a bigger problem
than my current setup.
2) Replace the 4070 and I-5 with a W-5
and an ADCOM GFP-750.
3) Replace the 4070 with a PS Audio
HCA-2 with the I-5 as preamp. Biamping
is possible, but gain matching would likely be
a problem.
4) Replace the 4070 and I-5 with the
HCA-2 and an ADCOM GFP-750.
I usually purchase previously-owned
equipment and would sell my surplus
equipment. The estimated net costs range
from +$4500 for Option 1 to -$100 for
Option 4. I will have the option of testing
the HCA-2 and GFP-750 combinations
with my amplification. I am unlikely to be
able to audition the W-5.
Would these options deliver better low
level resolution than my current setup? Is
using an I-5 as a preamp “overkill” and a
waste of watts?
AURORA, ON
Continuing to use the Moon I-5 is
not so much of a waste of watts as a waste
of perfectly good resale value, Russell.
Since you are in the habit of buying used
gear, you know what we’re talking about:
this is a perfectly good integrated amp
that some audiophiles would be thrilled
to buy. Selling it means being able to buy
an excellent preamp (used, we presume),
and using twin amplifiers will make
matching of gain and phase much less
of a chore.
What we’ve just said about the I-5
also goes for your 4070 amplifier, which
is quite a lot older but has a legendary
reputation.
The Moon W-5 is by far the best
choice. The smaller W-3 can be an
option too, but may be hard to find on
the second hand market. Of course a pair
of W-3 amps would be a killer combo,
but one great amp will beat two lesser
ones, which is why we recommend passing
on the Adcom. You can always add a
superior second amplifier later.
My current set-up: Marantz CD-17
KI Mk 2 preamplifier, Restek Consens
Line Level Power amplifier, Restek Correct
amplifier, Mission 753 Freedom. Cables are
MIT Terminator II (RCA), QED Silver
Spiral (XLR) and Audioquest Bedrock
(single wiring, with Audioquest Slate as
jumper).
I have been having problems getting a
sharp stereo image and make the loudspeakers
disappear completely as point sources of
sound. No matter how I adjust the speaker
position, the stereo image always tends to be
on my right side, when I face the system from
the sweep spot.
So far I have been getting many feedbacks
on this problem from many of my hi-fi gangs.
Their answer include:
The environment : they said the environment
is conducive for the set up as the left and
right side is not balanced. On the left, there
is a side wall with a dining table and on the
right, they is no wall, but there is a sofa set.
I don’t quite understand how this affects the
stereo image.
Some said it was due to the equipment
itself. Many commented that the Mission
753 is the weakest link and I should change
the speaker. They said the speaker does not
match the amp. Some also commented about
my speaker cable as well as interconnect.
I intend to try biamping. However, my
Restek preamp has only one set of pre-outs.
How do I accomplish biamping here? Must
I use the exact power amp and speaker cable
for biamping?
