How your donations help In Asia A playful start to a whole new world (Sharmila)18(Umesh) Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) can have a profound effect on the future prospects of children. Providing toddlers with engaging environments and teaching them basic coordination, colours, shapes, words and numbers makes them far more likely to succeed at school, giving them more choices later in life. We’re expanding our ECCD program in Nepal, but how do you reach families in remote hill villages where homes are so inaccessible? In remote areas of Baglung in western Nepal, an innovative project encourages mothers to meet once a month to make toys for their children and learn about ECCD play. Sharmila made a basket of toys for her 18 month-old son, Umesh. Now they spend time playing together and have playtime sessions with a neighbour’s child. Sharmila never went to school or had toys so this project has made her determined that her son will have access to both. Child Guardian 6
