Bob Graham Senate Collection
processing begins

Processing of the Bob Graham Senate
Collection began on November 1,
2010 when Debra Davendonis-Todd
arrived to take on the task of arranging
and describing 777 cubic feet of
material from Graham’s lengthy career.
Davendonis-Todd comes to UF from
the South Carolina Political Collections
at University of South Carolina, where
she also received her master of library
science degree. Before taking the
position, Davendonis-Todd researched
Graham’s career and commented, “I am
impressed with Senator Graham’s service to the people of Florida and excited to dive
into his uniquely detailed collection.”
In addition to his Senate records, the collection contains 168 (and growing) boxes
of his personal pocket notebooks, over 250 videos and an undetermined number of
photographs. Historian Steve Noll had this to say about the collection’s importance:
“Anyone attempting to come to grips with the emergence of Florida as a key
component (arguably THE key component) of the Sunbelt phenomenon will certainly
benefit from an examination of the materials held in this archive.”
Unique to this collection are the records and
memorabilia from Graham’s workdays. The
workdays began during his 1978 gubernatorial
campaign, when he engaged in over 100 different
jobs. Afterwards, Graham continued the workdays
in largely blue collar venues such as shipyards, post
offices and fast food restaurants. As Noll notes,
“Graham viewed the workdays as an important
means of connecting to his constituency.”
Processing is estimated to take two years. When
completed, the Graham Senate Collection will add
to the libraries’ already first-rate collection of
political papers.
UF materials on display in
New York exhibition
The Smathers Libraries loaned several
items for the exhibition “Nueva York
(1613-1945) in New York City through
January 9, 2011. Presented by the New
York Historical Society in collaboration
with El Museu del Bario, this
exhibition reveals the powerful role
that Latinos and Spanish-speaking
countries have played over three
centuries to help shape New York into
the most culturally vibrant city in the
world. In addition to a copy of Jose
Martí’s Versos Sencillos from the
Harold and Mary Jean Hanson Rare
Books Collection, photos and letters
from the Braga Brothers Collection
were also contributed.

Price Library of Judaica to
celebrate 30 years
The Isser and Rae Price Library of Judaica will celebrate its 30th anniversary
with a rededication celebration on March 6, 2010 beginning at 11:30 a.m. in
Smathers Library.
The celebration will include speakers, a tour of the library, which is housed on
the first floor of Library West, and a companion exhibition of rare materials

assistant scholarship
winner
Hypatia Bolivar, a student assistant
at the Marston Science Library, won
the fall semester James and Leslie
Rutherford Library Student Assistant
Scholarship. She is from Tallahassee
and is a third year psychology major
with a minor in soil and water science.
The $500 scholarship is awarded
each semester to a student assistant
employed by the Smathers Libraries.
The winner is chosen based on an
essay. This semester’s essay topic was
“What services might students need
from academic libraries in the next
decade?”

Comic book and cartoon
reference collection

The favorite pastime of John W. Lindell
was to search used bookstores, flea
markets and book sales for what he
called, “those nuggets that I can add to
my library.” Lindell’s specialized area
of collecting was cartoon, comic strip
and animation art, a hobby he began as
a serviceman in 1953. For 50 years, as
a diversion from his university studies
and the “strict’ discipline of a career
as a financial executive, John Lindell
amassed an all-encompassing and
colorful collection of over 1,000 titles
dating back to the early 1900s.
“I just bought this one book. I don’t
know why. It just fascinated me,” Lindell
told a reporter (writing a story on local
collectors and the passion for collecting)
for the St. Petersburg Times in 2003. “It
was a compilation of five earlier books
by William Steig, the dean of cartoonists
for The New Yorker.”
This single purchase led to the desire
and need to collect the work of other
New Yorker cartoonists such as Peter
Arno, Saul Steinberg and Gahan
Wilson. Mr. Lindell then set his
collecting sights on political cartoons,
classic comic strips and the careers
of legendary comic strip and cartoon
artists and illustrators.
The collection includes books by
individual artists (Thomas Nast,
Norman Rockwell, Alberto Vargas,
Bill Mauldin, Charles Addams, Jules
Feiffer, Edward Gorey, William Steig,
James Thurber, R. Crumb, Theodore
“Dr. Seuss” Geisel, etc.) and 220 books
of anthologies published by various
magazines such as The New Yorker,
Punch, Playboy, Mad Magazine,
National Lampoon, The Saturday
Evening Post and Esquire, as well as
those by individual editors of note
(Lawrence Lariar, George Herriman,
Hugh Hefner, etc.). There are also
150 paperback (pocket) books of
individual artists (Charles Schulz,
Mort Walker, Hank Ketchum, Chester
Gould, Walt Kelly, etc.) as well as
comic strip anthologies (“Pogo,” “Dick
Tracy,” “Dennis the Menace,” “B.C.,”
“Garfield,” “Peanuts,” “Doonesbury,”
“Beetle Bailey,” etc.). In August,
2008, the complete John W. Lindell
Collection was donated, in his memory,
to the University of Florida George A.
Smathers Libraries by his wife, Marjorie
A. Lindell and his daughter, Ann
Lindell (head librarian, Architecture
and Fine Arts Library at the University
of Florida) to support and enhance the
holdings in The Suzy Covey Comic
Book Collection in the Popular Culture
Collections of the Department of
Special and Area Studies Collections.
John W. Lindell was born in York,
Nebraska in 1932 and spent his
formative years in Shenandoah, Iowa.
Marriage, career and family led to
homes in Iowa, Missouri, Kansas,
Houston and New Orleans. Mr. and
Mrs. Lindell moved to St. Petersburg,
Florida in 1987 where he continued
to spend many hours searching for
the next “nugget” to add to his vast
accumulation of comic art resource
material. John W. Lindell died on May
28, 2008.
Inspired by the veteran cartoonist,
J. Arthur Wood (who donated his own
collection of art and reference material
to the Library of Congress in 2003),
Lindell often thought about preserving
and sharing his collection. Lindell’s
daughter, Ann, encouraged him to
consider the University of Florida as
a repository for his half century of
dedicated and joyful collecting. Due
to the generosity and consideration of
his widow and family, this possibility
became a reality on August 14, 2008.
The Lindell family
donation is a great source of reference
material for research in the history of
illustration, comic strips, comic books
and political cartoons and is inter-filed
within the general Popular Culture
monograph holdings in the
Department of Special and Area
Studies. The oldest item in the
collection is a 1905 paperback pulp
anthology of the “Brainy Bowers and
Drowsey Duggan” comic strip from the
Chicago Daily News and the latest
additions are political cartoon
anthologies from the dawning of the
21st Century.

comics, illustration and cartoon art

As we enter the final phase of Florida
Tomorrow, the University of Florida’s
comprehensive capital campaign to
raise $1.5 billion, we are asking for
assistance. The University of Florida
George A. Smathers Libraries has been
a vital component of this campaign
since its silent phase began. The
libraries’ campaign goal is $20 million.
As of today, the libraries has reached
64% of its goal.
The University of Florida holds the
promise of the future: Florida Tomorrow
– a place, a belief, a time. Florida

doers, for optimists and pragmatists, for
our future world leaders, scholars and

Diane Bruxvoort named associate dean for scholarly resources and research services

Public Information Officer
Diane Bruxvoort recently joined the
Smathers Libraries as the associate
dean for scholarly resources and
research services. For the past ten years
she was at the University of Houston
Libraries, where she served as the
associate dean for collection services
since 2008. While at Houston she was
also the assistant dean for collection
services and head of access services.
Bruxvoort has a master of library
and information science degree from
the University of Texas at Austin
and earned a bachelor’s degree from
Northwestern College, graduating
summa cum laude.
In her position as associate dean
Bruxvoort will ensure effective and
responsive collections and service in
support of the university’s teaching and
research programs. One of her goals

In 2009 Bruxvoort received the
“Dean’s Standard Bearer Award for
External Service for the University
of Houston Libraries.” She was
awarded the Outstanding Service
Award for “Outstanding Support for
Students with Disabilities” in 2004
from the University of Houston. In
2003 the libraries honored her with
the “Dean’s Torch Bearer Award for
Service to the UH Libraries” and the
“Group Trailblazer Award for Leading
Organizational Change.”

As we end this calendar year, I
would like to reflect on some of the
accomplishments that have taken place
in the libraries.
We are continuing to integrate
materials from the Panama Canal
Museum (PCM) in Seminole, Florida
to our holdings. The transfer will be
completed by June 2012. Artifacts,
photographs and books are becoming a
part of the Latin American Collection
at the University of Florida. The PCM
materials will be brought together in
the catalog through virtual bookplates.
Digitization of selected items is in
process by the Digital Library Center
(DLC), and can be found online at
http://ufdc.ufl.edu/pcm.
Over the past year, the DLC loaded
1.5 million pages online that are freely
available for viewing at any time from
http://ufdc.ufl.edu. The University
of Florida digital collections get over
500,000 hits per month (that’s over
16,000 per day)!
The libraries’ information technology
department has moved out of
Smathers Library into the East
Campus Building, several miles from
the main campus. The new building
expands the university presence in east
Gainesville and assists with economic
revitalization efforts in that area. The
vacated space in Smathers is being
used as a much-needed work area for
the preservation and special collections
departments. Debra Davendonis-Todd
has been hired to work in the space
processing the Bob Graham Senate
Collection (see cover article).
Also in Smathers, the bottom floors
of the two aging marble staircases
have been replaced and historically
preserved. Marble from the original
vein in the quarry was used on the
steps from the first to second floors.
Additionally, the restrooms received
much-needed renovations and
updating.
Looking ahead
Planning for the Statewide University
System Shared Collection facility,
coordinated by UF library staff,
continues. With a proposed ground
breaking in summer of 2011, and
a 24-month construction and
remodeling time line, the new facility,
to be located in northeast Gainesville
near the airport, may be in operation
by the summer
of 2013.

room. Beginning with the spring 2011
semester, librarians will be available to
help students with research questions.
Library administration, faculty and
staff are dedicated to continuing to
provide new services, technologies,
study spaces and materials to our
students, faculty, staff and visitors. We
