Making
the Right
Choice
When considering if it is time to invest in a new structure for your farm or ranch, many important decisions will come into play.
Not only are you faced with cost but, also, you must consider what uses you are looking to get out of the building.
Before picking a design there are many
things to take into consideration
1. Is there any plan in the near future for
further operation expansion?
2. Eminent equipment or herd expansion.
3. Consideration of height and width of future
equipment relative to existing assets.
4. What types of interior activities will you
be using it for?
5. Future renovations like interior lining and
insulation considerations.
6. Floor layout and door placement to
accommodate multi purpose activities.
7. What are the lighting requirements?
(Natural or Electric).
8. Penning and space requirements for
livestock handling facilities.
9. Future use of the structure versus planned
use (may require commercial design).
10. Building codes and municipal compliances.
11. Permit requirements.
12. Possible resale of the operation (best
recovery on assets).
Determining the location and proper
site preparation is an important step
often overlooked.
1. Consult with your UFA Building Rep or
on site Contractor to assist with structure
location if required.
2. Choose an open windswept area to reduce
the potential of snow overloading.
3. Look for natural drainage away from the
building.
4. Level site 9” to 12” below future finished
floor.
5. Consider the contractor who prefers 15
feet of clearance around the site to allow
for material storage and operation of
construction equipment.
6. Use “Call Before You Dig” to ensure no
buried primary utility services are located
below or near the proposed site for the
structure. To locate secondary services is
the responsibility of the property owner.
7. Do not finish the interior pad prior to
building the structure, in order to avoid
risk of damage or soil contamination
to the pad.
