UDFCD BMP MONITORING SITES Orchard Pond EDB ORCHARD POND EDB Description Location Typical Details Installation Photo Gallery Monitoring Data Other Examples Description The Orchard Pond extended detention basin, located at Grant Ranch in Denver, was constructed in 1998 by the Bowles Metropolitan District. The District has been collecting water quality and flow data from the pond since 2004. By studying the design of the basin and the parameters of the watershed, the statistical data will be used to develop relationships between the tributary catchment characteristics, the extended detention basin design parameters and their effects on water quality. With the results from the monitoring, we are able to determine how effectively the basin stores different stormwater volumes and to study the hydraulic functioning of the outlet structure.
UDFCD BMP MONITORING SITES Orchard Pond EDB Since the initial construction, the following modifications have been made to improve the facility: o In 2004, a micropool was incorporated into the basin and the outlet structure was improved with a perforated plate. o In 2005, the inlet structure was modified with an improved forebay and an energy dissipater in order to improve sedimentation. Orchard Pond is directly upstream of Bowles Lake, a large facility used for recreation, fishing and boating. Therefore it is important to protect these waters from metals, oil, grease and sediment that is typically found in urban stormwater runoff. UDFCD has been collecting water quality and flow data at this site since 2004. Wright Water Engineers is responsible for running and maintaining the sampling equipment and taking the samples to the lab after a storm.
