MISSION STATEMENT: The Academy for Information Technology is a small, four-year career academy that<br />

fosters critical thinking skills in its culturally diverse student population. By stressing intellectual curiosity, hard<br />

work, ethical behavior, and technological expertise with business integration, the school community guides its<br />

students to achieve their greatest potential. The <strong>AIT</strong> graduate is prepared academically, technologically, and<br />

interpersonally for the challenges of the future.<br />

STUDENT SELECTION: Applicants are selected from an extremely diverse population of eighth grade<br />

students in each of the twenty school districts of <strong>Union</strong> <strong>County</strong>. Students are selected to attend the Academy for<br />

Information Technology in a competitive process based on the following criteria:<br />

‣ Grade point average (7 th – 8 th grade)<br />

‣ Standardized Test Scores (7 th grade)<br />

‣ 2 Admissions Assessments (Math & Reading Comprehension/Writing Skills)<br />

CURRICULUM<br />

COURSE DESIGNATION: The Academy for Information Technology day is divided into four block-time<br />

instructional periods in an alternating A/B day schedule. Because students are admitted to the school through a<br />

competitive process, all courses are designed and taught at the honors or enriched levels and are not<br />

specifically labeled as such; there is no tracking. In this sequence, all graduation requirements will be met.<br />

Courses designed to prepare students for the Advanced Placement examination are designated as “AP.


ACADEMY FOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY<br />

The Academy for Information Technology is comprised of a four-year program dedicated to preparing students for the<br />

information technology and business industries. Students in the Class of 2013 will earn a minimum of 144 high school<br />

credits and 3 <strong>Union</strong> <strong>County</strong> College credits through this course of study.<br />

English: English I-IV, AP Literature and Composition<br />

Mathematics: Combined Algebra (covers both Algebra I and II topics), Geometry/Trigonometry, Mathematical Analysis,<br />

Calculus, AP Calculus I/AB, AP Calculus II/BC, Probability and Statistics, AP Statistics<br />

Social Studies: World History, U.S. History I, U.S. History II, AP U.S. History, AP European History, AP Government<br />

and Politics: U.S.<br />

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS<br />

Students must earn a minimum of 110 credits to graduate with a high school diploma endorsed by the New Jersey<br />

Department of Education. The suggested minimum coursework for the Academy for Information Technology is as<br />

follows:<br />

‣ Four years of English<br />

‣ Four years of Health, Safety and Physical Education<br />

‣ Four years of Science<br />

‣ Three years of Social Studies<br />

‣ Four years of Mathematics<br />

‣ One year of Visual, Performing, and/or Practical Arts<br />

‣ Three years of World Language<br />

AWARDS AND HONORS<br />

‣ High Honor Roll: Awarded each marking period to students earning 90 or above in all subjects.<br />

‣ Honor Roll: Awarded each marking period to students earning 80 or above in all subjects.<br />

‣ National Honor Society: Open to juniors and seniors who meet the society’s standards for academics, character,<br />

leadership, and service. Students must have a QPA of 92 or above in order to be considered.<br />

‣ Spanish Honor Society: Open to juniors and seniors who meet the society’s standards for academic excellence in<br />

Spanish. Students must have a QPA of 90 or above in Spanish and an overall QPA of 80 to be considered.<br />

QUALITY POINT AVERAGE: The Quality Point Average (QPA) appearing on the high school transcript is<br />

unweighted and includes all subjects with the exception of coursework taken at <strong>Union</strong> <strong>County</strong> College and any repeated<br />

coursework. The GPA for <strong>Union</strong> <strong>County</strong> College coursework can be found on the college transcript accompanying the<br />

high school record.<br />

ARTICULATION AGREEMENT WITH UNION COUNTY COLLEGE: Through June 2010, the Academy<br />

for Information Technology, in conjunction with <strong>Union</strong> <strong>County</strong> College in Cranford, NJ provided its students with the<br />

opportunity to earn college credit in Information Technology during the course of the regular school day. All students in<br />

the class of 2013 were required to enroll in one course in their freshman year for a total of 3 college credits. Credit and<br />

grades earned through this collaborative program appear on an official transcript from <strong>Union</strong> <strong>County</strong> College. Grades<br />

also appear on the high school transcript for informational purposes only.<br />

ARTICULATION AGREEMENT WITH NEW JERSEY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY: Through an<br />

articulation agreement with the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), students who meet the conditions of the<br />

agreement and choose to attend NJIT have the opportunity to earn college credit and continue their education at NJIT after<br />

graduation. All students who are accepted to <strong>AIT</strong> through the fall of 2015 will be eligible for joint admission under this<br />

agreement.


COMMUNITY SERVICE: Every student is encouraged to complete a total of 40 hours of community service while<br />

attending the Academy for Information Technology. Twenty hours should be completed by the end of the sophomore<br />

year and the remainder before graduation. These hours should be fulfilled with at least two different community service<br />

activities.<br />
