OUR MISSION<br />

<strong>Union</strong> <strong>County</strong> Academy for Allied Health Sciences is a unique four year secondary learning community.<br />

Our highly selective school develops confident well-rounded students through challenging academic<br />

experiences, with exposure to various health career skills and occupations.<br />

We provide authentic interdisciplinary educational experiences that promote critical thinking skills.<br />

Leadership and collaboration experiences are cultivated and refined to meet the communities’ changing<br />

needs. Relevant technology is utilized to enhance future employment in a global society. The Academy<br />

for Allied Health Sciences embraces and embodies highest personal and professional standards.<br />

STUDENT SELECTION<br />

Applicants are selected from a diverse population of eighth grade students in each of the twenty school<br />

districts of <strong>Union</strong> <strong>County</strong>. Students are selected to attend the <strong>Union</strong> <strong>County</strong> Academy for Allied Health<br />

Sciences in a competitive process based on the following criteria:<br />

‣ Grade point average (7 th – 8 th grade)<br />

‣ Standardized Test Scores (7 th grade)<br />

‣ Two Admissions Assessments (Math & Reading Comprehension/Writing)<br />

CURRICULUM<br />

COURSE DESIGNATION: The <strong>Union</strong> <strong>County</strong> Academy for Allied Health Sciences day is divided into<br />

four block-time instructional periods in an alternating A/B day schedule. All courses are designed and<br />

taught at the honors or enriched levels and are not specifically labeled as such; there is no tracking.<br />

Courses designed to prepare students for the Advanced Placement examination are designated as<br />

“AP.” The College Board has certified all district AP courses taught. Class Rank is NOT computed due to<br />

our competitive admissions process, small class size, and the exceptional performance of our students.

POST-SECONDARY PARTNERSHIPS: The <strong>Union</strong> <strong>County</strong> Academy for Allied Health Sciences<br />

works in conjunction with Seton Hall University, Kean University, Fairleigh Dickinson University<br />

and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) to provide students with the<br />

opportunity to earn college credit for course work completed during the course of the school day.<br />

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS<br />

Students must earn a minimum of 120 credits to graduate with a high school diploma endorsed by the<br />

New Jersey Department of Education. The suggested minimum coursework for the <strong>Union</strong> <strong>County</strong><br />

Academy for Allied Health Sciences is as follows:<br />

‣ Four years of English<br />

‣ Four years of Health, Safety and Physical Education<br />

‣ Four years of Science<br />

‣ Four years of Mathematics<br />

‣ Three years of Social Studies<br />

‣ Three years of World Language<br />

‣ Four years of Allied Health (Career Education)<br />

‣ One year of Visual, Performing, and/or Practical Arts<br />

‣ One-half year in financial, economic, business and<br />

entrepreneurial literary<br />

‣ Technology Literacy integrated throughout the<br />

curriculum<br />

‣ EMT-B Coursework and New Jersey Certification<br />

testing by the end of the senior year


COMMUNITY SERVICE: Every student is encouraged to complete a total of 40 hours of<br />

community service while attending the <strong>Union</strong> <strong>County</strong> Academy for Allied Health Sciences. Twenty<br />

hours should be completed by the end of the sophomore year and the remainder before graduation.<br />

These hours should be fulfilled with at least two different community service activities.<br />
