Students who sign out of school may not return to school that<br />

day without prior permission from the Principal.<br />

Absences from classes due to early dismissal other than<br />

religious or school-sponsored activities are charged toward a<br />

<strong>student</strong>’s attendance record. Students will be expected to<br />

makeup all assignments due to an early dismissal.<br />

4.9 Participation in After School Activities<br />

Students must be present in school for four continuous hours to<br />

be eligible to participate in any school-sponsored activities.<br />

Students who are not present for four continuous hours, for<br />

other than religious observances, will be marked absent from<br />

school for the day, their attendance record will be so charged,<br />

and they will not be allowed to attend school sponsored<br />

activities such as dances, competitions, presentations, the<br />

Prom, etc… Students not picked up promptly at the<br />

conclusion of an event may be barred from participation in<br />

all after-school activities.<br />

4.10 Denial of Credit<br />

When a <strong>student</strong> exceeds 18 chargeable absences in a full-year<br />

course, 9 chargeable absences in a semester course, or 4<br />

chargeable absences in a quarter-year course, he/she may be<br />

denied credit in the course(s). Similarly, excessive cuts from a<br />

class may result in the denial of credit for the course.<br />

4.11 Notification of Parents/Guardians<br />

When a <strong>student</strong> is absent from school and the parent/guardian<br />

has not contacted the school, the Principal’s Office will<br />

attempt to verify the absence with the parent/guardian.<br />

Parents will be notified in writing on the 5 th , 10 th and 15 th<br />

absence from school.<br />

Parents/guardians are notified of each instance of class cutting.<br />

4.12 Appeals Procedure<br />

Upon notification of denial of credit, the decision to deny credit<br />

may be appealed by a parent/guardian, in writing to the<br />

Principal, within five (5) school days after receipt of<br />

notification. The Principal will refer the appeal to the<br />

Attendance Review Committee (ARC).<br />

The ARC established by the Principal will be charged with the<br />

responsibility for rendering decisions related to all attendance<br />

appeals. The ARC will meet and submit a recommendation<br />

to the Principal. The <strong>student</strong> and their parent/guardian have<br />

the option of attending this meeting.<br />

The following circumstances may constitute an exception to<br />

loss of credit:<br />
