sign of your commitment and hard

the appropriate sacrifices. I can learn. I 

can meet the challenge. I can succeed.” 

Your graduation is a clear manifestation 

of your own empowerment. You did it, 

and we are truly proud of you.

We believe your Central education

The University of Central Oklahoma 

was first known as the Territorial Normal 

School, created by the Oklahoma 

Territorial legislature in December 1890 

to educate teachers for the one-room 

school houses being built across the 

growing territory. 

For more than 120 years, developing 

leaders for Oklahoma and the nation has 

been Central’s bedrock mission. 

From a territorial school of 23 students 

to more than 17,000 today, UCO 

has gone through many stages of development 

with more than 110,000 graduates. 

Now Oklahoma’s third largest state university, 

UCO has six colleges, including 

the Jackson College of Graduate Studies. 

THE HISTORY OF THE 

UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL OKLAHOMA 

Central’s first students met in 

Edmond’s First Methodist Church. In 

1892, construction began on the school’s 

first building, Old North Tower, still 

standing today. Over the next century, 

more buildings would be added, moved, 

torn down or rebuilt. Grass would give 

way to parking lots for the huge commuter 

population of the ‘70s and ‘80s. Now, 

grass grows over what used to be parking 

lots as the university has evolved into a 

beautifully landscaped campus, meeting 

the needs of those seeking a traditional 

campus atmosphere, while still serving the 

needs of the non-traditional student. 

Today, Central has moved into the 

role of being Oklahoma’s major metropolitan 

university with nationally recognized 

programs. 

During the 2011-12 academic year, 

Central was recognized in U.S. News & 

World Report’s 2012 Best Colleges — No. 

81 in the Tier One “Regional Universities: 

West” category. Forbes named Central to 

the magazine’s list of the nation’s 650 best 

undergraduate institutions. In addition, 

The Chronicle of Higher Education listed 

Central as one of the top producers of 

U.S. Fulbright Scholars. Professors Wei 

Chen, Ph.D., a 2008 U.S. Professor of the 

Year, and David Hartmann, Ph.D., both 

have spent the last year working abroad on 

Fulbright scholarships. Meanwhile, 

Assistant Professor of Photography Mark 

Zimmerman recently was named a 2012 

DaVinci Institute Fellow, while English 

Professor Gladys Lewis, Ph.D., received 

the 2012 Oklahoma Medal for Excellence 

in Teaching. All bring recognition to 

Central’s quality faculty. 

Central’s mission remains one of 

helping students become productive, creative, 

ethical and engaged citizens and 

leaders. In a world of increasing change, 

Central works to immerse students in a 

culture of learning to prepare them for the 

challenges they will face in the years to 

come, transforming their lives both today 

and tomorrow.

Symbols of Authority 

The Mace 

Among ancient orders, the mace 

was a heavy staff or club made of wood 

and metal that was borne by, carried 

before or placed near a magistrate or 

other dignitary as an ensign of authority. 

In 1975, students and faculty in 

Central’s then Industrial Arts program 

constructed the university’s mace. It is 

approximately 34 inches in length and 

weighs 9.65 pounds. 

Near its top is a miniature replica 

of Old North Tower, created in pecan 

wood and encompassed within a bronze 

crown. Thirteen pieces of solid walnut 

wood make up the majority of the 

mace. The base on which the bronze 

medallion sits is rosewood. A bronze 

band encircling the mace is inscribed 

“University of Central Oklahoma.”

In keeping with tradition, UCO 

President Don Betz will be wearing a 

medallion that was created in 2011 

with both past and future university 

presidents in mind. 

The chain features at its center a 

3.5-inch antiqued bronze medallion 

showing the official UCO seal. On the 

flip side are the names of Central’s first 

15 presidents, from Richard Thatcher, 

who served from1891-1893, through 

W. Max Chambers, 1949-1960. 

Curved metal banners help form 

the chain on each side of the medallion. 

Each banner bears the name of one of 

the next five Central presidents, including 

President Betz who began his service 

in August 2011 as Central’s 20th 

president. The medallion is designed 

with blank metal banners, evenly 

spaced among smaller official UCO seal 

medallions. These blank banners are for 

the names of all future presidents, symbolizing 

the chain of university leadership. 

Graduation With Honors 

baccalaureate degrees 

• Summa Cum Laude to graduating 

seniors with a GPA of 3.90 or 

higher 

• Magna Cum Laude to graduating 

seniors whose GPA is 3.80 - 3.89 

• Cum Laude to graduating seniors 

with a GPA of 3.70 - 3.79

degrees are conferred to those with a 

4.0 average in all graduate coursework.

To be eligible to graduate with 

honors, baccalaureate candidates must 

have completed at least 45 hours at the 

University of Central Oklahoma. 

Graduation with honors and degrees conferred 

are pending a final check by Graduation 

Support Services.

Special Notes for Graduates and Their Guests 

• Free ice water will be available in the 

south lobby concession area throughout 

the ceremony. TV monitors and 

extra seating also will be available in 

the lobby. 

• Guests may not take photos from the 

Field House floor during the 

commencement ceremony. 

• As a point of courtesy, and to 

maintain the dignity of this formal 

ceremony, guests and graduates 

should remain in the Field House 

until the commencement is formally 

concluded with the recessional. 

• At the conclusion of commencement, 

all graduates will be led off the Field 

House floor as part of the recessional. 

It is important that all graduates 

immediately exit the Field House as 

part of the recessional. Guests should 

meet graduates there, not inside the 

Field House. 

• UCO’s Barnes & Noble will sell 

UCO gift items from an area located 

in the foyer until 20 minutes before 

the ceremony begins.

The Tradition of Academic Dress 

The precise origins of the several 

parts of academic dress still remain a 

matter of conjecture. The unheated 

buildings which medieval scholars frequented 

may have necessitated the wearing 

of gowns for comfort’s sake. The 

gowns and the hoods were common at 

British universities before the 14th century; 

the square cap is thought to be a 

16th century import from the University 

of Paris. European universities continue 

to use a wide variety in the cut and color 

of gowns and the type of head wear 

worn. 

Academic attire began to appear 

on United States campuses in the late 

1890s. Since that time, its use has 

become universal for solemn university 

functions, and its pattern is highly uniform. 

From the color and cut of the 

American academic attire, one may 

determine the institution from which 

the wearer received the degree and the 

degree earned. 

The Cap 

The mortarboard has become the 

universally accepted style in United 

States colleges and universities. The 

standard tassel worn by faculty is black. 

However those with doctoral degrees 

may wear a gold tassel. Candidates for 

degrees have colored tassels that identify 

the student’s college as follows:

The gown 

The bachelor’s gown has a long, 

pleated front with shirring across the 

shoulders and back. The flowing sleeves 

are pointed at the fingertip and are 

almost knee length. 

The master’s gown has oblong 

sleeves that reach well below the knees. 

The sleeves are cut so that the forearm 

comes through a slit just above the 

elbow. 

The doctor’s gown has broad, velvet 

panels down the front, and three 

velvet bars on full, round sleeves. This 

velvet trimming may be either black or 

a color distinctive of the degree. 

The associate's gown is the same 

style as a bachelor's, but dark gray. 

The hood 

The Master’s Hooding Ceremony 

focuses on advanced degree candidates 

and their accomplishments, while adding 

visual meaning. The colors of the hood’s 

silk lining represent university colors, 

which for Central are Bronze and Blue. 

The color of the hood’s velvet border 

represents the field of learning, such as 

light blue for Education or golden yellow 

for Science.

Class Marshals - spring 2012 

Each of the University of Central 

Oklahoma’s five undergraduate colleges 

awards a graduating senior the title of 

“Class Marshal.” These five students 

have the highest grade point averages 

and number of Central credit hours in 

their respective colleges. 

The honorees each receive a Class 

Marshal stole, signifying the highest 

degree of academic excellence. First presented 

in 1994, the stoles have become 

a UCO tradition, now enhanced by the 

bronze Class Marshal graduation gown. 

The following are the Class 

Marshals for the Spring 2012 

Commencement. 

Sarah Tehga De Toy is an 

Elementary Education major with a 

minor in Leadership and a 4.0 grade 

point average in the College of 

Education and Professional Studies, 

where she was named Outstanding 

Undergraduate Student. From Luther, 

she has been active in numerous campus 

organizations, as well as a member 

of the Women’s Varsity Rowing Team 

2007-09. Other memberships include 

Kappa Delta Pi (president 2010-11) 

and Omicron Delta Kappa honor societies, 

National Science Teacher 

Association, Emerging Leaders 

Scholarship Council and Women of 

Many Ethnic Nationalities — 

W.O.M.E.N. (officer 2008-11). 

Recipient of the 2012 DaVinci-Martin 

Scholar Award, she was on the 

President’s Honor Roll 2007-12, 

received the Freshman Standout Award 

and has been named in Who’s Who 

Among American Students in American 

Universities & Colleges. She received 

several academic scholarships, including 

the Emerging Leaders Scholarship and 

Tuition Waiver, 2007-10. She plans to 

teach and to pursue a master’s degree in 

elementary education with Montessori 

certification. 

Kelvin Le is a Biomedical 

Engineering major with a 4.0 grade 

point average in the College of 

Mathematics and Science. From 

Oklahoma City, he has been president 

of the Robotics Club and a member of 

the Engineering and Physics Club, 

Mortar Board and the National College 

Senior Honor Society. He was named a 

CURE S-STEM Scholar and received 

the Goldwater Scholar Honorable 

Mention and the Outstanding 

Biomedical Engineering Project honor. 

Other recognitions include the 

President’s Honor Roll, and the 

Engineering and Physics Achievement, 

the General Chemistry and the 

Multicultural Student Achievement 

awards. He recently received a National 

Science Foundation fellowship. He 

plans to pursue a Ph.D., with graduate 

work in electrical engineering. 

Katherine M. Rogers is a Vocal 

Music Education major with a 3.97 

grade point average in the College of 

Fine Arts and Design. From Crescent, 

she has been a member of the 

Cantilena Women’s Choir, the Concert 

Chorale, the American Choral 

Directors Association and the National 

Association for Music Education. She 

received the Freshman Achievement 

and the Legacy scholarships and was on 

the President’s Honor Roll seven semesters, 

the Dean’s for two. She plans to 

pursue a career in vocal music education, 

hoping to teach in an elementary 

or middle school. 

Annie Nhi Truong is a 

Management Information Systems 

major with a 3.97 grade point average 

in the College of Business 

Administration. From Oklahoma City, 

she has been a member of Delta Mu 

Delta International, Phi Theta Kappa, 

Alpha Chi and the Golden Key 

International honor societies. She is a 

longtime member of the Vietnamese 

Choir at the Cathedral of Our Lady of 

Perpetual Help. She was on the 

President’s Honor Roll, was a 2012 

Milton Bast Award nominee and is a 

member of the Association of 

Information Technology Professionals. 

She plans a career in information technology 

and to pursue a master’s degree. 

Kaylen R. Washbourne is a 

Criminal Justice-Police major and 

Sociology minor with a 4.0 grade point 

average in the College of Liberal Arts. 

From Edmond, she has been a member 

of Sigma Alpha Lambda national honors 

society, as well as Eta Tau, UCO’s 

chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma, the 

national criminal justice honor society. 

She received the Finney Scholarship for 

Criminal Justice and multiple tuition 

waiver scholarships from the School of 

Criminal Justice. She plans to become 

an Oklahoma City police officer.
