Admission Procedures<br />
• Admission packets to the upper division nursing program<br />
can be obtained from the Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong><br />
located in the Coyner Health building on campus or<br />
through the web site at www.uco.edu/cms/nursing.<br />
• Students are admitted twice a year to the nursing program.<br />
Please see our website for application deadlines.<br />
• Final selection <strong>of</strong> students is based on the following criteria:<br />
• A minimum GPA <strong>of</strong> 2.5 in all courses completed<br />
• A minimum science grade <strong>of</strong> no less than C with<br />
2 <strong>of</strong> 5 science courses completed at time <strong>of</strong> application.<br />
• A minimum grade <strong>of</strong> C in pre-pr<strong>of</strong>essional nursing<br />
courses.<br />
• Three references from faculty with 2 <strong>of</strong> the 3 from Science<br />
or <strong>Nursing</strong> faculty.<br />
• Achievement testing required by the Department <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Nursing</strong><br />
• Number <strong>of</strong> semesters completed at UCO<br />
• International students must have a written TOEFL score<br />
<strong>of</strong> 530 or computerized TOEFL <strong>of</strong> 197 or greater.<br />
• All applicants must have a UCO identification number<br />
to apply.<br />
Transfer Students<br />
Students transferring from other colleges and universities<br />
are accepted on a competitive basis. A conference with the<br />
chairperson <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> is recommended.<br />
Career Ladder Students<br />
Career Ladder students (RN’s and LPN’s) may challenge<br />
portions <strong>of</strong> the curriculum. A conference with Department<br />
Chairperson or Career Ladder faculty advisor is required.<br />
The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Oklahoma</strong> (UCO), founded in 1890, is located on<br />
a 210-acre campus in Edmond, a northern suburb <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oklahoma</strong> City. Fall<br />
2010 enrollment exceeded 17,000. UCO is accredited by the Higher Learning<br />
Commission <strong>of</strong> the North <strong>Central</strong> Association <strong>of</strong> Colleges and Schools as a<br />
bachelor’s and master’s degree granting institution. The <strong>University</strong> consists <strong>of</strong><br />
five undergraduate colleges and a college <strong>of</strong> graduate studies, with day, evening<br />
and weekend course <strong>of</strong>ferings. UCO awards ten bachelor’s degrees, <strong>of</strong>fering 114<br />
majors in 63 programs <strong>of</strong> study. Six master’s degrees are <strong>of</strong>fered in some 54<br />
majors in 31 programs <strong>of</strong> study. UCO also <strong>of</strong>fers study in six non-degree prepr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
areas and two certificate programs.<br />

About UCO and the<br />
<strong>Nursing</strong> Program<br />
Recognizing that nursing is both an art and a science and<br />
understanding that nursing education should take place<br />
in the university setting, in 1969 the diploma program at<br />
Baptist Memorial Hospital joined with the university to<br />
establish the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science with a nursing major. The<br />
first graduates <strong>of</strong> this new program received their degrees<br />
and were eligible for licensure in 1972. Since that time<br />
well over 1800 men and women have graduated from the<br />
nursing program at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Oklahoma</strong><br />
and have begun practice as pr<strong>of</strong>essional nurses.<br />

Pediatrics to Geriatrics, the Hospital setting to the<br />
Community Setting, and Staff Nurse to Administrator.<br />

medical centers, suburban health departments and home<br />

Transition From Student<br />
to Graduate<br />
• Foundation for nursing practice is established during<br />
Freshman and Sophomore years<br />
• <strong>Nursing</strong> theory and clinical application is taught during<br />
the Junior and Senior years<br />
• Concepts <strong>of</strong> evidenced based practice are taught<br />
throughout the program, knowledge is put into practice<br />
during the senior year with the development <strong>of</strong> a<br />
research proposal<br />
• 12-14 hours <strong>of</strong> nursing major each semester<br />
Transition from Graduate to RN<br />
• Degree earned: Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science degree with a<br />
<strong>Nursing</strong> Major<br />
• Eligible for National Council Licensure Examination<br />
(NCLEX) for licensure as registered nurse. Graduates<br />
<strong>of</strong> UCO consistently have one <strong>of</strong> the top pass rates for<br />
