5 FUN AND AFFORDABLE VACATIONS

Whatever you plan to accomplish this summer on your family
vacation, these five suggestions will allow you to have fun
and save money at the same time.
1. Mountain Cabins
Mountain cabins give off the cliché for a romantic weekend;
however they can also be used for family reunions, fishing
getaways, or just a relaxing rustic vacation.
2. More Mother Nature
Spending more time outdoors offers countless opportunities
for those on a budget this summer. From hiking, camping,
barbequing, boating or fishing, the activities are endless and
fairly inexpensive. So save some pennies and go soak up the
vitamin D!
3. Long-Distance Getaways
Thinking of getting away for a while? Try and coordinate it
when the kids are out of school. Pick an affordable place
where you can spend months at a time for less than you’d
spend at home, however, and your travel itinerary begins to
make more sense. Packing light will also help reduce costs.
4. Nearby Day Trips
Planning one or two things a week when the kids are home
is a real sanity saver. Day trips are a great way to save money
and maintain the fun and entertainment factor. Don’t forget
the road trip snacks!
5. Weekend Excursions
For those that have the extra bucks to spare, weekend
getaways are great to consider. Antiquing and fun county
fairs and festivals are a great way to blow off steam and
enjoy the weekend.
SUMMER FUN WITH THE OFFICE OF GLOBAL AFFAIRS
UCO International students took a summer trip to South
Padre Island, Texas on May 20 th -May 23 rd . The students
studied the different ecosystems of South Texas, dolphin
watching, snorkeling, and fishing which allowed the
international students a different experience, than that of
Oklahoma. Domestic students were included in the trip as
well, which helped to broaden the understanding among
both the international students as well as the domestic
students. The time these students spent together in South
Texas has resulted in several friendships made among UCO
students from all over the world. This inexpensive trip to
South Padre fulfilled many needs from the international
community here at UCO. Friendships were formed,
learning and adventure took place and most of all, and the
students had fun!

SPOTLIGHT ON STUDENTS
Congrats to Taylor Egger, and
international Business Major for receiving
the Benjamin Gilman Study Abroad
Scholarship! The scholarship is sponsored
by the U.S. Department of State, and
awarded Taylor with $5000 for her Study
Abroad program in Hanyang University in Korea. Taylor is a
sophomore and will be leaving to Korea this fall semester
2013!
Study Abroad numbers also went up this summer! There
were 3 students during the summer of 2012, and summer
of 2013 there are 20 students going to Mexico, Spain, and
South Korea.
Congrats to Ana Anderson for winning the Outstanding
Support Personnel Award through OCSPA this year!

STUDENT AFFAIRS IN THE
Congrats to Rod Costner! He transferred to the Office of
Student Conduct from Police Services in April. We
thrilled to have his expertise in his new role as the Case
Coordinator!

PREPPING FOR STAMPEDE WEEK
Campus Activities needs NSOP/ SW volunteers!
We are seeking faculty and staff volunteers for all parts
of New Student Orientation and Stampede Week. This is
a great time of the year and we couldn’t do it without
the support of the UCO community.

The Central Pantry is open all Summer to serve UCO students, faculty and staff with any food needs they might
have. The Pantry will be opened from 9 to 4 Monday-Thursday, and from 9 to noon on Fridays.
In the month of June, Central Pantry helped 175 adults and children! This includes 30 bags for children at the
Edmond YMCA.
