Paul E. Richter TWA Scholarship Fund
Paul E. Richter, as seen to the left, was one of three founding fathers of
Trans World Airlines (TWA). His granddaughter, Karen Holden Young,
was in her barbershop where she found out that UCM is an aviation
school that promotes what her grandfather strove to influence in every
student he ever encountered. TWA started out as a flight school, called
the Aero Corporation of California. Richter helped build the school with
his philosophy to “promote and encourage youth to reach for their
dreams and reach for the stars.” To honor the early heritage of TWA,
Karen and her family decided to donate $30,000 to UCM’s aviation
department every year, for the next three years, to assist students with
their flight expenses through scholarships and the departments discretionary fund.
Aviation Student Government
This month, a new student organization was created to provide experience and opportunities for
those whom are interested in helping the aviation department thrive. The previous newsletter
called the organization the Aviation Advisory Council, however, it was decided to be called, the
more fitting, Aviation Student Government (ASG). The President, Chase Neill, organized a few
meetings where officers were elected for the four committees: communications, internships,
scholarships, and fundraising. The Assistant Dean, Tony Monetti, encourages all students to
participate in the ASG to help the department grow and produce a marketable student who
strongly embraces the Core Values (listed in the top-left corner). How do we participate you ask:
it’s simple, make yourself aware of the officers within the organization and give them suggestions
and concerns to address at the next meeting.
You can also email (aviationstudentgovernment@gmail.com) and the ASG will be sure to get
your feedback to the appropriate persons. For those of you who would like to report something
anonymously, there is a comment box near the bulletin board outside T.R. Gaines office. Some
suggestions have already been made and are listed on the second page of this issue. Remember,
networking is one notch in the key to success and this provides a perfect opportunity to start.
Safety Stand-Up
The Safety Stand-Up was a huge success; it was very interactive and exciting. The event covered
topics such as: developing a consciousness of safety, by Dr. Raymond Cain, emergency
preparation procedures, by Lori Drake, cold weather operations, by Darlene Loeffler, Multiengine
Transition, by Rick Martinez, and military operations, by Cpt. Nick Decker. After all of the
presentations, Skyhavens Line Service Specialists taught students how to perform a FOD walk.

New Assistant Chief Flight Instructor, Darlene Loeffler
Darlene is our newest hire at the airport; inspired by a helicopter flight in junior high,
she decided to pursue a career in aviation. She started out as an undergrad at Averett
University in Danville, Virginia where she received her ratings all the way up to CFI/
CFII/MEI. Shortly after, she was hired at Pinnacle as an F/O in a CRJ 200. She stayed
at Pinnacle for a few years and became a captain which introduced her to a new pilot
and alumni from UCM, Ted Hunt. They flew together a few times, and he found out
that she was interested in living closer to Whiteman AFB where her husband is
stationed. As an old CFI and manager at Skyhaven Airport, Hunt knew that Skyhaven
Robert Carton, flight student, and Darleen Loeffler,
Assistant Chief Flight Instructor
was looking for a new assistant chief flight instructor. Darlene looked into it and is
now taking a huge role at the airport as an assistant chief flight instructor, and more
importantly, fulfilling her second passion, teaching students to fly.
Meeting Review: Senator Pearce & MoDOT Leadership
Tony Monetti and Tanner Rindels met with Senator Pearce and MoDOT leadership
to discuss the present and future plans of Skyhaven Airport. One Flight Higher is the
name of the airports expansion project. Currently, Skyhaven finished Phase I of the
project that started in 2007. Phase one consists of these steps: grade the terminal
area, increase aircraft apron and taxiways, add T-hangars, and incorporate an airport
access road. Now that those steps are complete, Phase II will begin. Phase II is a
6-10 year project that will continue the growth of the airport by constructing a new
terminal, creating new parking facilities, relocating hangar 2, etc. Among the many
Aviation for MoDOT, and Tanner Rindels, Airport Manager, Skyhaven Airport.
topics that were discussed, one important aspect is funding. We are currently
discussing numerous options for funding, one of which, is the possibility of
expanding our runway to 5,500ft to bring in more customers. With a higher number
of flights/day we will be able to raise money from fuel sales to fund Phase II.
Heart of America Light Sport Aviation Classic (Testimonial by Miyukiko Kostelny)
Heart of America Light Sport Aviation Classic from 1,800ft.
The Light Sport Expo was a lot of fun. We got to see the LSA side of aviation, go up
in actual LS aircraft, and even do some fundraising for the various UCM Student
Organizations. Although the weather was cold, we still bundled up for a lot of fun
flying and plane watching!
Student Comments from September 2012
Jim Foley suggests that the department: reupholster our 172’s that have large rips in
the fabric and upgrade the Duchess’s because IFR flight is legal but not necessarily
comfortable.
Make your voice heard by emailing your comments, suggestions, and concerns to
(aviationstudentgovernment@gmail.com). The ASG’s communications team will monitor this email account and relay
important points to the appropriate people. Other topics that are being discussed at this time are: Foliotek, self-examining
checkrides, an ASG dance, flight school coins, and t-shirts.
Solo’s and Checkrides
The names of each student/instructor who performs a solo or passes a checkride will be included in future editions of this
report. When you perform a solo or pass a checkride, ask your instructor to write an email and send it with an
attached picture to (asgsolocheckride@gmail.com).
Safety Tip of the Month: Safety is a lifestyle, not a checklist.
Remember to think of safety as a part of aviation, not as something
extra. As Tony Monetti says, “Students First, Safety Always.”
