The Honors Project is a four-credit-hour capstone
course designed to promote undergraduate student
research and creative activity. You will select and
work closely with a UCM faculty member who
oversees your progress, supervises your work
and helps to facilitate completion of the project.
You are strongly encouraged to choose a topic that
corresponds directly with coursework in your major
areas of study. This could include course readings,
classroom experiences and faculty lectures. Many
times a project’s idea is sparked by your classroom
interaction in your major and flourishes outside of
the university setting.
The most rewarding Honors Project will combine
your chosen program of study and your personal
interests. It may explore an important local or
global issue, investigate a personal concern or
showcase an artistic talent. However it ultimately
takes shape, the primary goal of the Honors
Project is the development and enhancement of
your independent research and creative aptitude.

The Honors Project is one of the
most stimulating and rewarding
aspects of The Honors College
experience at UCM. Each project
reflects the research and creative
achievement that is unique and
exceptional to the student.
What you should know
You should begin considering an Honors Project topic early in your
academic career. Once you have reached 60 credit hours, you must
schedule an appointment with the Coordinator of Undergraduate
Research to discuss possible topics. After an initial consultation with the
coordinator, you will choose a faculty mentor to assist in the preparation
of “The Honors Project Proposal.”
During your initial consultation you will receive a form that consists of a
cover sheet, a project proposal and an Honors Project Budget Request.
The Honors College staff then reviews the proposal — signed by you
and your faculty mentor — and, if the proposal is deemed satisfactory,
final approval is granted and you will be notified by email. Please keep
in mind that this proposal must be submitted no later than two semesters
prior to your graduation.
Your faculty mentor will be involved in all aspects of your project and
will assign a final grade. Additionally, The Honors College asks each
faculty mentor to provide a confidential assessment that evaluates the
content and quality of your project.
Enroll in HONR 4000
• The Honors College Project Proposal Form must be signed and approved.
• You must have senior standing or receive approval of the dean.
• You must enroll no later than the add/drop period of the same semester
the project will be completed.
• Honors Project must be completed by the end of student’s final semester.
The Honors Project challenged me to think
beyond academics by integrating my
learning experiences with my career goals.
It gave me the opportunity to work with a
faculty member of my own choice to create
a project of my own design. This led to a
fulfilling experience which I know will help
me in the future.
