UCLH is an iconic institution. However, UCLH is not in healthy condition because of tight budgets and the move to GP
commissioning which causes serious uncertainty. In order for UCLH to maintain and enhance its envious reputation of delivering
top-quality patient care, it should bring on board creative governors. I am an Examiner for 3 major finance institutions
(Association of Chartered Certified Accountants ACCA, Chartered Insurance Institute CII and Chartered Institute of Purchasing
and Supplying CIPS) I hope to bring an outward-looking perspective to UCLH and make a significant impact towards delivering
excellent education and world class research. I would like to ensure that UCLH seek excellence in every way. I am determined
to ensure that management fulfils their stewardship roles by effectively monitoring and reviewing their performance.
I am an existing Governor and would like to be re-elected because I believe I can make a useful contribution to patient care
by listening and using patients’ views to make changes and improvements.
I am a member of the Patient Experience Committee and the High Quality Patient Care Group, which work to improve all
aspects of patient care, from appointment to discharge. My contribution includes: working with the cancer services manager
to improve responses to complaints letters; visiting post natal woman with the head of midwifery to gain feedback about their
experiences, and attending breast feeding breakfasts to support new mothers. I am part of a new Governor group examining
quality issues.
I feel passionate about staff being welcoming and kind to patients, since I regard non clinical care as an important part of
recovery. This includes giving information when requested, smiling, efficient appointment and discharge systems, and reducing
wait times in clinics.
I have a wide knowledge of health policy and systems, gained from working at the King’s Fund. This background, along with
my work as a trainer and mentor in the health service helps me understand the challenges facing health professionals and how
to match these with patient expectations.
I am a Londoner and feel strongly about making health services appropriate for London’s diverse, changing population. I urge
you to vote for me. If you want to know more, please look at my website www.quercuscoaching.com.
I am interested in becoming a governor for University College London Hospital representing the public constituency because
I am passionate to be part of ‘one of the most complex NHS Trust in England. What attracted me to vie for governorship is
the importance of UCLH in delivering a diverse spectrum of health services to a diverse and large population in the UK. It is
this importance and great vision to provide superior health services to the community that can only motivate a self-driven
individual to be part of. I hope to contribute meaningfully to the attainment of UCLH top 10 objectives, which if diligently
pursued and attained will better our community.
I am asking for your support in my application to be a UCLH Public Governor because:
• If elected I feel I could bring enthusiasm and dedication to the job.
• I believe my professional experience could be useful to the Governing Body:
As a trained economist, I am used to working with financial and clinical data. For 20 years I have worked in health policy –
currently collaborating with the World Health Organisation on a six country infectious diseases project. I have often been
involved in hospital settings and in relationships between health and political institutions. Though little of my work has involved
the NHS, I have been lucky enough to make contacts in the UK health sector who I could draw on for advice.
• I am interested in the opportunities and dangers of current UK health policy, especially the new Health Act, as well
as working productively with Monitor and UCLH Directors.
• Over the last 16 months, as a Member, I have gained experience through e.g. PEAT inspections within UCLH.
• Family and friends have been born, treated and died in London hospitals (including UCLH), allowing many
comparisons in care standards. UCLH’s achievements are impressive, but improvement must be constant.
• I have lived in Camden since aged two, watching the borough, and London, change – including its health needs, the
care available and citizen involvement. I feel strongly that I want to help make a positive difference to how these things
develop over the next few years.
