Residences at UCL
Agreeable accommodation in a friendly environment at affordable prices. This folder provides detailed
information on accommodation and other services that UCL Residences offer to Summer Schools and
Languages Schools, groups and individual travellers as well as conference organisers.
Introduction:
Each residence is listed, and there is
a summary of the services that each
residence offers.
Most of our residences are within walking
distance of the main College campus
located on Gower Street and all that
London has to offer the scholar, tourist
or conference delegate. The residences
vary considerably from converted early
Victorian Town Houses in Bloomsbury to
a modern purpose built residence. Whilst
some residences offer accommodation
on a bed only basis, others can provide
bed and breakfast accommodation with
the option of an evening meal.
Our residences are not hotels, but
we offer clean and comfortable
accommodation with bed linen and
a towel provided and changed on
a weekly basis. Most have pleasant
common rooms, or grounds enabling
you to sit and relax after a hard day
studying, siteseeing or shopping and
the money that you save by staying in
one of our residences instead of a hotel
can be used to make the most of all this
wonderful city has to offer!
Residences at UCL was awarded the
“Hospitality Assured” kite mark in 2003,
the first University in London to achieve
this award, and we are dedicated to
improving and increasing our provision
of high standard accommodation for our
ever growing student and commercial
market.
We hope that the information given in
this folder will be of interest, and we
look forward to being of service to you
in the near future.
We are only too happy to discuss
your requirements, and there is a
list of contact numbers for each
residence page.
ACCOMMODATION
Camden Market
Camden market is the fourth most popular visitor attraction in London captivating both tourists and Londoners
alike. It can take up to a few hours to explore the stalls selling crafts, bric-a-brac, books, clothing, jewellery, music
and much more. You also can not fail to visit some of the many shops neighbouring the canal and the streets.
Description:
The canal was historically used for
trade, to transport goods to and from the
City. The canal itself was bordered by
warehouses, stables and other premises
necessary to the canal.
In the early 1970s the canal trade ceased
and a temporary market appeared in
the vacant area. Although initially only a
food market it quickly became popular,
rapidly flourished and grew.
World famous novelists such as Charles
Dickens, George Orwell and Mary
Shelley have lived in Camden Town and
described it in their literature, highlighting
London’s cultural diversity.
Nowadays several markets exist.
1. Camden Lock Market
This market is now occupying the
warehouses used during the canal trade.
It originally was a crafts market and is
still very much crafts focused but the
stalls are today offering a much wider
variety of items such as books,
clothing, etc.
2. Stables Market
The market is built in the former stables
and horse hospital necessary when the
canal was in use. A mixture of indoor
and outdoor stalls, it now is the centre
for home furniture and decorative items.
The other focus is on clothing and art
pieces for goths and other sub-cultures.
3. Canal Market
The Canal Market is accessible from
Chalk Farm Road. It is a general outdoor
market.
4. The Electric Ballroom
Just steps away from the entrance of
the underground station, the Electric
Ballroom is the first market you encounter
when arriving in Camden Town. The
items traded at this market range from
clubbing wear to records, jewellery
and accessories to designer items
and leather outfits.
5. Camden Market / Buck Street Market
This outdoor market is primarily focused
on clothing and fashion wear.
Camden Town and its markets offer the
passer-by a wide diversity of goods,
a large choice of exotic foods in a
multicultural environment.
If you want to change from the usual
museums and other tourist attractions,
stop by Camden Town to discover the
true heart of London.
