Prerequisite for entry<br />

Successful completion of <strong>German</strong> <strong>Level</strong> 1+ at <strong>UCL</strong> CLIE or for learners who have studied the<br />

language before, for instance up to GCSE level, and have some knowledge of the main<br />

present and present perfect tenses<br />

Term duration<br />

10 x 2-hour classes<br />

Progression<br />

After 20 hours students may progress to level 2+<br />

Aims and Objectives<br />

The aim of the course is to give students an opportunity to revise their survival skills and<br />

acquire more sophisticated ways of dealing with practical matters. This includes revision and<br />

consolidation of vocabulary, grammar, morphology, syntax and phonetics. Cultural<br />

awareness will be developed.<br />

Functions<br />

- Talking about languages; giving reasons<br />

- Talking about family; describing photos and persons; expressing opinions<br />

- Planning and booking a trip; expressing suppositions (wahrscheinlich/vielleicht)<br />

- Talking about hobbies and interests; reacting positively, negatively or surprised<br />

- Talking about media; making a complaint<br />

- Expressing what one likes; reading a menu; order something in a restaurant; making<br />

contacts<br />

Linguistic Structures/ Phonetics<br />

- Basic rules of the pronunciation of spoken <strong>German</strong><br />

Grammar<br />

- weil clauses; comparative (with wie/als) and superlative (am höchsten/am weitesten)<br />

- dass clauses; possessives and adjectives (with dative); genitive<br />

- Modal verb sollen<br />

- Reflexive pronouns (sich ausruhen), temporal adverbs (zuerst, dann, danach), verbs<br />

with preposition (sich ärgern über), indefinite pronouns (niemand, wenige, viele, alle)<br />

- Indirect questions with ob; adjectives without article (nominative and accusative)<br />

- Personal pronouns (dative: mit dir, mit ihm), relative clauses and pronouns (nominative<br />

and accusative)<br />
