Greetings from the Director
Welcome to The University of Akron! We are happy to host the newly arrived international
students. Approximately 175 new students and scholars arrived for the Fall 2004 semester.
We wish you success as you adjust to your new home. While studying hard, do not neglect to
take advantage of the many resources on campus. This fall semester you will be able to enjoy
the new recreation and student centers which will enable you to keep the stress levels low.
The Holmes-Rahe Social Readjustment Scale is a measurement scale developed by two
psychologists for the purpose of measuring stress in a person's life. Stress is an effect,
positive or negative, of a life change. The scale consists of a list of forty-two life-changing
events ranging from the death of a spouse (100 stress points) to a parking ticket (11 points).
By checking the appropriate life events, a person can measure his/her own state of stress.
According to the authors, a person scoring 300 or more is high risk for illness or injury due to
stress. People who score 150 - 299 reduce their risk by 30 percent, while people who score
150 or below are low risk. Although I am not convinced that the scale is either valid or
reliable, I am fairly certain that you, as new international students, will be experiencing some
stress in your life while making the adjustment to your new life in the U.S.
Just for fun, I selected some events that may apply to new international students:
According to my estimate, new international students are just one parking ticket away from
being high risk. Fortunately, there are effective ways to manage stress. Below, please find a
partial list of helps that may assist some of you:
Stressful Event Points Stressful Event Points
Change in financial status 38 Change in recreational habits 19
Change to a different line of work 36 Change in religious activities 19
Outstanding personal achievement 28 Change in social activities 18
Starting or finishing school 25 Change in sleeping habits 16
Change in living condition 25 Change in eating habits 15
Set reasonable goals for yourself. Address problem issues specifically (define the problem and
decide on a solution). Schedule regular times for relaxing. Exercise, eat right, and get
adequate sleep. Break up large assignments into smaller, manageable pieces. Set
boundaries and learn to say "no" to some good opportunities. And...don't get any parking
tickets.
My hope for you, this semester, is for you to lower your stress levels as you enjoy your new
home in Akron. Welcome, have a great semester, and check out the new recreation center.
Immigration Regulations – Five Ways to Stay Informed
As immigration regulations are constantly changing, it is very important to stay up-to-date on the rules and
regulations that keep you in status. Here are a few ways to stay informed:
• Check your uakron.edu e-mail account regularly
The Office of International Programs is constantly sending out new immigration (and academic)
information to our international students via e-mail. However, this information is ONLY e-mailed to
your uakron.edu account. If you use another e-mail account such as hotmail, yahoo, etc., please link
your e-mail accounts so you don’t miss any important updates.
• Check the Office of International Program’s website for up-to-date information
The Office of International Program’s website, www.uakron.edu/oip, contains a variety of information
for our international students. This includes immigration, admissions, academic advising and study
abroad information. Under the immigration section, you can find information for F-1 and J-1 students
and scholars and well as forms that can be downloaded and printed out.
• Pick up immigration information forms and checklists in the lobby of the OIP
As soon as you walk into the Office of International Programs, directly in front of you is a wall of
immigration information. Stop by the OIP during office hours and pick up informative checklists and
forms regarding a variety of immigration topics including; OPT, CPT, change of status, I-20/DS-2019
extensions, change of address, etc.
• Make an appointment with an immigration counselor in the OIP
As immigration matters are often situation-specific, an immigration counselor in the Office of
International Programs can meet with you to discuss how the regulations directly impact you. The
immigration counselors can advise you of your immigration options and answer any questions
regarding your status. Although immigration counselors will respond to e-mail and phone inquiries on
general topics, for more complicated, student-specific issues, it is necessary to come to the OIP for an
actual appointment. To schedule an appointment with an immigration counselor, please call (330)
972-6349 or stop by the OIP. Immigration counselors do not accept walk-ins or same-day
appointments.
• Browse the USCIS (United States Citizenship & Immigration Services) and U.S. Department
of State government websites
The USCIS, formerly known as the INS, has a very informative website including up-to-date
immigration information straight from the U.S. Government. The website also has useful links and
government forms which can be downloaded. The address is: http://uscis.gov/graphics/index.htm.
The U.S. Department of State’s website provides information on travel, visas, passports, embassies,
consulates, etc. This address is: http://www.state.gov/.
International Education Week
The government of the United States of America has
designated November 15-19 to be International
Education Week. It is a time to reflect on and celebrate the
value of an international education. The Office of
International Programs (OIP) is currently working on
organizing events and programs throughout the week to
highlight the value that international students, scholars, and
employees bring to The University of Akron’s campus. If you
have an idea that will promote intercultural awareness and
would like to participate either as an individual or as part of an
organization, please contact Rebekka L. Bowman at (330)
972-6194 or bowmanr@uakron.edu or call Chrissy Stertzbach
at (330) 972-2582.
In addition to various topics that will promote the value of an
international education, the OIP would also like to have an
educational discussion on a subject that affects societies
around the world. Two of the past topics were AIDS and
International Conflict. If you have an idea for this year’s
theme, please feel free to contact Rebekka L. Bowman or
Chrissy Stertzbach with your suggestion. Thank you in
advance for your help.
The OIP will be sending out emails to the OIP List-serve with a
schedule of the events. Please be sure that you are using
your UANet ID, or, if applicable, have it linked to your other
email account.
CROSS-CULTURAL DIALOGUES
Would you like to meet Americans in a friendly, relaxed
manner? Do you want to gain insight into American culture?
Learn about its values and ideas? Would you like to share
your own culture with Americans? If you answered yes to any
of these questions, then Cross-Cultural Dialogues is the
program for you! The program is designed to bring a group of
Internationals and Americans together for informal discussions
about various aspects of culture. The group’s interaction is a
wonderful way to interact with Americans, gain more insight
into American culture, and perhaps gain a deeper
understanding of your own, as well as other cultures around
the globe.
The group meets Wednesdays from 4 p.m. – 5 p.m. Because
we are interested in promoting student interaction between
Americans and Internationals, space is limited. If you are
interested in participating, you may pick-up an application
form in the lobby of the Office of International Programs
(Polsky 483). If you have questions, please contact Rebekka
L. Bowman at (330) 972-6194 or bowmanr@uakron.edu, or
Chrissy Stertzbach at (330) 972-2582.
The Association of Global Student
Organizations is searching for
New Members!
Each year, the Office of International Programs (OIP)
works with the Association of Global Student
Organizations (AGSO) to promote programming designed
to enhance the internationalization of The University of
Akron (UA); provide support for the international
community at UA; as well as promote the cultural, social,
and educational programs available on campus. This
interaction is a vital ingredient to the success of many of
the programs sponsored by the OIP and various members
of AGSO.
Already this year, members of AGSO have participated in
the Organization Fair during International New Student
Orientation. Many have answered new students prearrival
questions, provided airport pick-ups, and helped
students find housing. The OIP is grateful for invaluable
help AGSO members provide to new, incoming students.
We, also, look forward to working with AGSO on planning
the events for International Education Week from
November 15 – 19, The Around the World Party on
November 13, and Spring Orientation, January 11 & 12,
2005. The OIP hopes to remain in close contact with
AGSO throughout the academic year in order to help the
various members promote their activities and events.
Every year, new student organizations are formed. If you
belong to an organization that is currently not a member
of AGSO, please contact Rebekka L. Bowman at
bowmanr@uakron.edu or (330) 972-6194 or Melonie
Blancaneaux at (330) 972-2582 for membership
information. The OIP would love to work with you!
If your organization is already a member of AGSO,
please contact the OIP as soon as possible, so we
can ensure we have an accurate list of your officers.
The following is a list of all the organizations that are
currently members of AGSO: Akron International
Friendship, the African Students Association, Akron
Chinese Christian Fellowship, the Bangladesh Students’
Association, The Chapel, the Chinese Soccer Club; the
Chinese Student Association, the Chinese Student &
Scholar Association, Circle “K” International, Hillel Jewish
WORLD TRADE CENTER CLEVELAND
Foreign Graduate Student Retention
Program
The World Trade Center Cleveland has initiated a new
program aimed at linking Northeast Ohio companies
with the strong pool of foreign graduate students
studying in the area. The Foreign Graduate Student
Retention Program identifies qualified candidates for
employers seeking interns. Many Northeast Ohio
companies are planning to expand their markets
globally; foreign students can provide a wealth of
knowledge and understanding about a new region of
the world while also fulfilling specific needs as well.
Students will gain opportunities to work in a U.S.
business setting. An internship with a Northeast Ohio
company gives students exposure to the work and
living opportunities available in the region while
companies gain highly motivated students/employees
possessing the qualifications that are best matched for
their business/industry. If applicable, the intern will
also bring first-hand knowledge of countries where
many of these companies are seeking to do business.
Students will need to apply for appropriate OPT or CPT
approval through their university, if necessary.
Students wishing to be considered for the program
New OIP Staff Member
Ms. Robyn Brown was recently hired as Examiner Associate, a position that involves advising students on
immigration issues and preparing immigration paperwork. She has been involved with the international student
community at The University of Akron since she began studying here in 1998. As an undergraduate, she worked
as a student assistant in the English Language Institute. She received her B.A. in English in May 2003, and was
then employed as a graduate assistant in the OIP from Aug. 2003-Sept. 2004. She also helped with
international student orientations and attended international student events. She has traveled abroad to China,
India, Mexico, and Europe. Robyn is currently pursuing her M.A. in Higher Education Administration here at The
University of Akron. She is excited about her new position because it gives her an opportunity to help students
achieve their goals. We warmly welcome Robyn to our OIP staff.
Spring
Registration
Dropping Courses
Spring 2005 registration begins Friday,November 5 at 6 p.m.
Continuing students will be given priority according to the
number of credits that they have already completed. Know
that the credit number used to determine your registration
period does not include the classes that are currently in
progress. In order to get the most accurate information,
please go to: http://www3.uakron.edu/registrar/dates.html.
Click on Spring 2005 Registration Dates. Be aware that web
registration does not open until 6 p.m. on the first day of
each classification.
Students must go on-line to find out what classes will be
offered this Spring Semester. They may register either online
or in person at the Office of the Registrar in the Student
Administrative Services Building (SAS).
Remember to schedule an appointment with your academic
adviser early to avoid being closed out of classes. The
earlier you register, the more likely you will get the courses
and the time schedule that you want. Take special care to
be aware of those classes that are only offered once a year
and are prerequisites for other courses in your major.
Invoices will only be mailed once for the Spring Semester.
In order to receive the invoice in a timely manner, make
sure that your current mailing address is correct. The Office
of International Programs (OIP) advises students to update
their mailing address no later than the time of registration.
Addresses may be updated by accessing the Online
Information Center at www.uakron.edu/registrar.
Students should be aware that failure to receive an invoice
will not be a justification for late payment. Students are
expected to access their accounts on-line to find out the
amount of their bills and the due dates. Also, students who
register after the mass mailing date, which has not yet been
determined, will not receive any invoice and will have to go
on-line to find billing information. Remember that
students, who do not pay for their classes on-time are
subject to being dropped from all of their classes and
having a hold placed on their account. If students
cannot pay their entire bill at the time of initial registration,
we recommend that they enroll in the Installment Payment
Plan. Since billing information & registration is subject to
change, it is extremely important for students to be on the
OIP List-Serve to receive future updates.
This is just a brief reminder that if you are thinking about
dropping a course and going below full-time (full-time is 12
credits for undergraduates and 9 credits for graduates), it
is extremely important that you get permission from the
immigration staff at the Office of International Programs
(OIP) first. In order for the OIP to properly evaluate your
situation, you will be asked to fill out a Reduced Course
Load Form (RCL). There are two parts to the form. You
must fill out Section 1 and then either your adviser
(undergraduates) or your Department Chair (graduates)
must fill out Section 2. If your reason for going below fulltime
is a medical one, you must submit an original, official
letter from a medical doctor stating the reason why he/she
recommends you take a reduced course load and for how
long. The letter should be submitted along with the RCL.
In this case, section 2 can be left blank.
Please plan for the OIP to take 48 hours to evaluate
your situation. If your reason for dropping below fulltime
is in compliance with the laws and regulations of the
United States Citizenship and Immigration Services
(USCIS), your application will be approved by the OIP staff.
You may then drop your class. If the OIP staff does not
believe that it complies with the USCIS laws and
regulations, your application will be denied. In that case,
you will be contacted by the immigration area of the OIP.
Remember the OIP is now required to report all
international students who go below full-time to the
USCIS.
For Fall Semester, the last day to withdraw from a course
with your academic adviser’s signature is Friday, October
22. From that date until Friday, November 19, you will
need both your adviser’s and instructor’s signatures. The
last week to withdraw from a course during the semester is
November 15 – 19. Since you will need multiple signatures
and this is International Education Week (a busy time in
our office), the OIP advises you not to wait until then to
start the withdrawal process, especially if you will be going
below full-time and need to get approval first. Also, be
aware that dates are subject to change. You can find the
most current information at:
http://www3.uakron.edu/registrar/fall2004wddates.html.
Also, remember that the date that you withdrawal effects
the amount of refund you will receive. Refund information
is available at:
Things to do…
Proving Health Insurance
for
2004-2005
The University of Akron provides excellent academic, social,
extracurricular and leadership growth opportunities through
the various courses of study, student organizations, and
campus activities. To experience all that the University has
to offer, it is important to stay physically fit as well as
academically fit.
Sometimes our best efforts cannot stop the common cold,
sickness, or accidents, and it is necessary to seek medical
help. These are the times that medical health insurance will
be as valuable as the education for which you are striving.
For your convenience, The University of Akron has
contracted with Leonard Insurance, Inc. to provide health
insurance. For more information logon to their web site at
www.leonardinsurance.com, or call Leonard Insurance, Inc.
at 330/266-1904. Ask for Mrs. Pat Brenckle or Ms. Heather
Nichols, and they will answer your specific insurance
questions, such as what is covered, deductibles, prescription
co-pays, and how to find a doctor.
It is mandatory for all international students to provide proof
of major medical insurance coverage for the entire
semester, for which you are registered. For example: for
fall 2004 coverage must begin on or before August 30, 2004
and terminate on or after December 17, 2004. You have
two options: You may purchase the University of Akron
Student Health Insurance or another that is comparable.
You may email (international@uakron.edu), fax
(330/972-8604) or bring your proof of insurance coverage
to the Office of International Programs, Polsky 483.
If you have any questions about proof of insurance
coverage, do not hesitate to contact Betty Palmer
(bpalmer@uakron.edu or 330/972-6349) or Denise Garrett
Brown (dmbrown@uakron.edu or 330/972-6934).
