• There are more than 3000 different diseases or disorders of the skin, hair and nails, which in an average year affect about 60 million Americans. • The combined annual cost to society of medical care and lost wages from these conditions is estimated to be in the billions.
• The skin is one of the largest organs in the body, having enormous surface area ranging from 1.5-2.0m 2 and making up about 16% of body weight. • Skin is constantly exposed to chemical agents and other environmental pollutants. National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) characterized skin diseases as one of the most pervasive occupational health problems in the Unites States.
